Benriach - 15 Year Old Pedro Ximenez Finish

Benriach – 15 Year Old Pedro Ximenez Finish
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 15 Year Old.   Strength: 46%
Summary: Matured in the traditional style in American bourbon barrels, this whisky is then ‘finished’ in Pedro Ximenez Sherry butts, sourced from the bodegas of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalucia, Southern Spain. During this second period of maturation the whisky derives many interesting characteristics specific to the Pedro Ximenez butt.
Nose: Honey, sultanas, dark chocolate with a flood of Pedro Ximenez Sherry.
Colour: Gold.
Taste: Cream and honey, infused with papaya, rosehips, eucalyptus and dark chocolate, all interwoven with rich Pedro Ximenez Sherry and oak wood.
BENRIACH DISTILLERY
FOR DISCERNING INDIVIDUALS:It’s not often a long kept secret is revealed in the world of Single Malt Scotch Whisky – but here is a true discovery! Since 1898, the BenRiach distillery has very quietly been producing quality Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which has only ever been enjoyed in very small quantities, by a few discerning individuals who have been fortunate enough to come across a bottle.
Today, BenRiach continues to produce its very special Single Malt Whiskies, as an Independent Distiller.
UNIQUE AMONGST MANY:The BenRiach Distillery is located in the ‘Heart of Speyside’, between the village of Rothes and the town of Elgin, in the North-East of Scotland. The Spey Valley, in which the BenRiach Distillery was built by John Duff in 1898, is home to many of Scotland’s great whiskies, but BenRiach has its own uniqueness borne from the particular methods and skills of the men who craft the whisky, the ingredients they use, the distinctive copper stills and high quality barrels selected for maturation.
“I am often asked what makes BenRiach special. There is no one thing, but the starting point has to be reputation and legacy. Then you must take the astonishing skills of the men who craft the whisky, the ingredients we use, the copper stills, the high-quality casks, our rich and varied inventory and our broad range of peated and non-peated expressions. To these you must add independence, enthusiasm, creativity and a real passion for whisky craftsmanship. As a result you get what I call a “heavenly explosion” – a sensational, unique, complex tour de force.
Master Distiller, Billy Walker.

Caol Ila - Stitchell Reserve/2013 Release

Caol Ila – Stitchell Reserve/2013 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 59.6%
Summary: A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt. From Caol Ila, an active distillery on the Isle of Islay. A eighth limited release of unpeated Caol Ila. From a batch made only once a year, from unpeated malt, for blending in the ‘Highland Style’. From a mix of refill American Oak, rejuvenated American Oak and ex-bodega European Oak casks, so interesting to compare with expressions from first fill Bourbon previously released at 8, 10 and 12 years old and a 14 year old from ex-bodega oak, released in 2012.
Appearance: Clear, olive gold. Light beading.
Nose: At full strength, immediately clean, aromatic and fresh: like inhaling Friar’s Balsam. After this first blast, more reticent; softly sweet, then a vivid freshness like that of crisp green fruit or lemon zest. Water raises a fruity, nutty honeyed sweetness and a faint note of treacle, with perhaps just a hazy hint of smoke.
Body: Light to medium. Oily, yet firm.
Palate: Drinks well straight; has an intense and in your face style, with a most appealing smooth, lightly oily texture. Firm, clean and fresh throughout. Intense and mouth-filling, with a great initial surge of sweet spiciness unaccompanied by the usual signature phenols of peated Caol Ila or indeed, much fruit. Becoming honey-nutty (nut brittle, with a dark edge of treacle bitterness) then finally, warming and drying. A good splash of water develops these flavours; it’s tongue- coating and appetisingly bitter-sweet now, leaving a spicy dryness as the tide of flavour ebbs.
Finish: Aromatic, spicy and drying; a balancing bitter edge embraces more of the soft nutty, biscuity notes, always maintaining that essential freshness overall.

Cardhu - 21 Year Old/2013 Release

Cardhu – 21 Year Old/2013 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age:    Strength: 54.2%
Summary: A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt. From the renowned Cardhu distillery on Speyside. A second limited release in this series. Interesting to compare with the 22 year old 1982, released in 2005. From ex-bourbon American Oak casks filled in 1991.
Appearance: Old gold; richer amber depths. Good beading.
Nose: Mild and at first quite shy. An early creamy, fruity note of vanilla and boiled sweets (bubble gum!) is faintly underscored by a rich, floral perfume with a cleansing edge. The creamy fruitiness persists as dried figs, rum- and-raisin ice cream, red apple skins and beeswax. Later a malty, biscuity base layer is revealed, as the cleansing edge becomes a sharply defined top layer. Overall, it’s a richer vanilla custard and fruit trifle creaminess that emerges. Water opens things out, raising both fruit and floral scents slightly, the boiled sweets now mandarin-flavoured.
Body: Fine and light.
Palate: At natural strength, smooth and savoury, with light acidity. Clean, refined, pleasantly drying and delicate. Then wonderfully aromatic with notes of black cherry; growing spicy, warming and elegant, with nutty, dark chocolate offset by buttery shortbread. It’s even softer with a drop of water. Now the taste starts cooler and sweeter; still savoury (mint on a fresh fruit salad) but also newly spicy across the tongue.
Finish: Long, aromatic and warming; smooth vanilla balanced by juicy tangerine and faint orange oil with spicy cedar, late silky-smooth dryness and a wisp of smoke.

Singleton Of Dufftown - 28 Year Old/2013 Release

Singleton Of Dufftown – 28 Year Old/2013 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 28 Year Old.   Strength: 52.3%
Summary: A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt. From Dufftown, an active distillery on Speyside. A first limited cask strength release of The Singleton in this series. From American Oak refill casks filled in 1985.
Appearance: Deep antique gold. Good beading.
Nose: Grand and mild; compact yet detailed, with ripe apple and pear fruit or perhaps beeswax and heather pollen, and scents of moorland herbs. Quite autumnal, with faint smoke and a savoury cereal note, and like an old dusty library carrying scents of wax and worn leather. Later, orange oil underscores the complex floral notes. In time some vanilla develops, becoming intense buttercream. Water lightens it considerably and brings out the malty, cereal character (like being in a grain loft), with leafy strawberries, more waxiness and the merest trace of smoke.
Body: Oily, dense.
Palate: At natural strength, this malt has a big, oily feel; sweet and reminiscent of a whole wheat breakfast cereal coated with honey. The initial effect is warming, with an instantly appetising astringency. Below this lie minty and faintly smoky notes and rich chewy liquorice with a digestive biscuit sweetness. It’s all sweeter and less oily with water; losing that piercing aromatic dryness and with the cereal note dimmed, it’s altogether gentler and more approachable.
Finish: Invigorating, warming and gloriously astringent at the end, with notes of pine and cedar to leave the palate tingling over a lingering last wisp of smoke.

Glendronach - 1990 Uk Exclusive Cask # 1240

Glendronach – 1990 Uk Exclusive Cask # 1240
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 23 Year Old.   Strength: 50%
Summary: Cask Type: Pedro Ximenez Sherry Puncheon.
Colour: Dark oak with glinting gold.
Nose: Rich toffee and toasted almonds with stewed barley over a chocolate-raisin richness.
Taste: Huge dark raisins and stewed plums with a complex balance of herbs and spices. Espresso coffee and cocoa beans with hints of sweet barley sugar explode on the palate.
GlenDronach Distillery: In 1826 the exuberant and extroverted James Allardice founded the distillery and produced his ‘Guid GlenDronach’ single malt.
In 2008, nothing less than a complete renaissance began. The BenRiach Distillery Company Ltd. became GlenDronach’s proud new owner.
While time can never stand still, their commitment will now ensure that the distinctive practices that have always defined GlenDronach will live on – the most influential of these being its independent ownership.
Independent ownership now gives them the freedom to rekindle the reputation of GlenDronach as the distiller of richly sherried single malt whiskies of inimitable and individual character. It’s a reputation that has travelled worldwide – to those in the know, it’s a well-kept secret.
They have re-launched the ever popular 12 year old Original, together with the already celebrated 33 year old. And they are hugely excited to reinstate a new edition 15 and 18 year old.
From the germination of the barley, to the flow of the purest middle cuts distilled spirit, every step in the GlenDronach journey is taken with meticulous care and immaculate timing.
Their glistening copper top mash tun and great Oregon pine wash backs form part of a carefully attended process.
Then, their four copper pot stills distil and re-distil the finest, richest spirit.
What follows is the final secret of GlenDronachs exceptional character.
Then, and only then are the whiskies ready to be bottled.
As was the case in 1826, The GlenDronach Distillery patiently matures its single malt whisky in superior quality sherry casks, hand crafted from European oak, by the most reputable and renowned bodegas in the south of Spain.
Over the years of extended maturation these carefully seasoned casks help create the unique richly sherried style that GlenDronach is famous for.

Lagavulin - 12 Year Old/2013 Release

Lagavulin – 12 Year Old/2013 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 55.1%
Summary: A limited edition, natural cask strength single malt whisky. From the essential Islay distillery, Lagavulin, on Islay’s rocky south coast. Twelfth in a series of special 12 year old releases from the original distiller’s stocks. Vatted from refill American Oak casks, each at least 12 years old.
Appearance: Extremely pale green-gold.
Nose: Soft, beguiling and cautious at first, when an appetising sharpness slowly crystallises into red berry fruit, then developing soft, savoury aromas and a delicious smoky sweetness. Savoury hints of charred baked potato skins cooked in a bonfire come first, then peat smoke and a box of spent matches come through. Later still, there are teasing, oily hints of sharp tropical fruit (lime pickle?). These aromas are altogether softer with water; less tense and underscored by youthful sweetness. There are smoky-fresh notes, then raisins and dried fruit, with distant wood smoke.
Body: Light. Oily.
Palate: Cooling at first, then salty, drying and dusty, with a good balance of sweetness and acidity. Beautifully cleansing, like a salad of tarragon and peppery rocket, then really appetizing, as if a char-grilled endive splashed with peppery olive oil. The charred notes then strengthen, into smoky wax. Sweeter with water and more accessible, as captivating notes of aniseed and fennel seeds give way to charred fruit scones and burnt jam tarts.
Finish: Simultaneously sweet and savoury, dominated by pungent smoke and appetising aniseed. With growing warmth, it becomes oily near the end. With water it is sweet and abrupt with subdued smoke; pleasantly drying and piney.

Talisker - 30 Year Old Single Malt - 2010 Release

Talisker – 30 Year Old Single Malt – 2010 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: IsleofSkye
Age: 30 Year Old.   Strength: 57.30%
Summary: A limited edition, natural cask strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
From the only distillery on the Isle of Skye.
Fifteenth and equal oldest limited release to be offered by the distillery.
From American & European Oak refill casks.
Interesting to compare with four previous bottlings of this age in the same series, all of them whiskies of great dignity, subtle nuance and easy balance.
Fewer than 3,000 individually numbered bottles available world-wide.
A consistently excellent, mild-mannered Talisker perfect for more subtle tastes.
DESCRIPTION: A more mature, reserved Talisker which is also confident, consistent and clearly in its prime. An interesting and complex whisky, with aromas that change constantly and a lively taste; remains a Talisker through and through and is an excellent example.
APPEARANCE: Full gold. Good beading.
NOSE: Mildnose-feel. Very reserved ,and slow. At first, teasing fruit acidity (red apple skins) and dried fruits, with sweeter notes (rum toffee, chocolate brownies). Quickly then, sooty smoke (a burned out peat fire) with, after a while, alluring, aromatic spices (frankincense, clove, cedar) and polished oak, followed by more fruit, now boiled sweets. Water makes it more maritime, with iodine, menthol and beach scents, but there are also notes of milk chocolate and soft vanilla toffee in the smoky development.
BODY: Medium.
PALATE: Drinks well at full strength. Slow but consistent, with autumn berries and dried fruit. Cherry stones. Cooling at first, then becoming hot and lively. Water (add only a little) brings up a pleasant smooth texture. It’s now quite sweet and again cooling to start (tart au chocolat) then warming overall, with some salt, a trace of acidity and some very measured, slightly sooty, smoke.
FINISH: Long, with roasted malt, the ghost of black pepper, and some nutmeg in the smoky and savoury aftertaste.

Tamdhu - 21 Year Old - Old & Rare Edition

Tamdhu – 21 Year Old – Old & Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 53.6%
Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers’ Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water is added to reduce its strength, as the Angel’s share has already taken care of that. No caramel, colouring is added, so that you can see it’s pure and natural colour. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration in the old fashioned and traditional style. By so doing, they leave in the entire Distillers’ preferred qualities apparent on the nose, palate and finish – self evident when you remove the cork. As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated.
Sweetly sherried – full of thick dark juicy fruited quality with molasses and a late barley gristiness all apparent on the nose. Palatewise – anticipate some raisin, grape, date and citrus hues plus vanilla pods all running to a soft, subtle sugary/oaked finish.

Tomintoul - 14 Year Old Single Malt

Tomintoul – 14 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 14 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle. The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp. Nose: curiously, there is a sea-weed saltiness attached to this one: not exactly what you expect to find from a malt made and (I think) matured in the centre of the Scottish Highlands. But it adds a compellingly attractive – if eyebrow raising – element to this delicately framed and gently structured, lightly honeyed malt fest. The oak splendidly keeps within the spirit of the style; Taste: just how many variations on a honeyed theme can you get? Here I count at least five, each wave coming in after the other with just the odd nip and tuck or expansion of its intensity; the very faintest smoke is detectable and just when the natural caramels appear to be getting too excited, the malt re-establishes itself; Finish: medium length, bur sheer quality all the way: Bird’s custard mixing dreamily with drier, playfully spiced, oaky vanillas. The lightest of oils spreads the grassy, sharper malts to ensure a wonderful lightness of touch; Balance: not a single weakness: no bitterness, no off notes, no caramels other than those naturally from the oak, no sulphur. Just magnificent whisky bottled exactly the way it is meant to be. An absolute corker from this little-known but outstanding distillery and one of the most delicately complex distillery bottlings of the year.

The distillery where these malts are crafted lies nested deep within the Hakushu forest, 700 meters above sea level, in the shadow of the southern Japanese Alps’ Mt. Kaikomagatake. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.

Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Yamazaki malts. The whisky is cradled in bourbon barrels and stored in aging cellars located in Japan’s Yamazaki and Oumi regions until it reaches the peak of maturity. It is here that nature paints a changing backdrop with a palette of seasonal colours and provides a warm moist climate to slowly nurture the whisky within the barrel. The result is a distinctively Japanese whisky with an uncommon aroma and smooth, lingering sweet flavour that only a bourbon barrel can impart. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.

Mosstowie - 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition

Mosstowie – 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 33 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. Due to increased demand for Ballantines Blend in the 1980s, the Mosstowie stills were altered to produce Miltonduff – the key component of Ballantines.
AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Freshly washed wool and hessian. With hints of polished oak, beeswax and orange peel.
TASTE WITHOUT WATER: A sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour. Pepper and ash notes linger.
AROMA WITH WATER: Creamy hot chocolate aromas with spiced orange and cardamom notes.
TASTE WITH WATER: Cinnamon and Clove influences with hints of Cedar wood.

Oban - 1995 Distillers Edition

Oban – 1995 Distillers Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 15 Year Old.   Strength: 43%
Summary: Oban is the frontier between the West Highlands and the Islands; the meeting place between land and sea. A perfect, sheltered harbour makes it the principal seaport for the Isles and the capital of the West Highlands.
It has a mild, temperate climate, warmed by the Gulf Stream and washed (too often, some might say) by the soft rain that often falls hereabouts. This misty, maritime character, with a background of heather and peat, is perfectly echoed in the malt whisky produced at Oban.
Oban is made using only the finest barley, malted to the distillerys own particular specification. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.
1995 Distillers Edition: Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.
The founders of Oban distillery were entrepreneurs who imported and exported goods for which they could sense a demand. They would have approved of the Spanish influence brought to bear in this Montilla Fino cask wood finish.
A seriously complex whisky of the highest order – a glorious zesty nose and plenty of sweet fruit complemented by salt and chewy, roasty caramel malt.
DISTILLED: 1995.
BOTTLED: 2010.
APPEARANCE: Amber, rose-hued.
NOSE: Outstanding. Fruity and pungent; sea salt with crushed grapes, orange zest and hints of smoke. Massively complex.
BODY: Full, rich.
PALATE: Most explosive Oban ever. Soft malt then wave upon wave of delicate yet rich fruit notes on a tide of brine.
FINISH: Sweetened Jamaican coffee and oak, with an attractive malt-biscuit effect as it dies down.

Glenlivet - 21 Year Old Archive

Glenlivet – 21 Year Old Archive
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 43%
Summary: Sitting in the Glen of the same name, taking its water from the River Livet which feeds into the Spey, Glenlivet has been producing whisky since the days when only small scale domestic production was legal. George Smith (of George & JG Smith) was the first distiller in the Glen to produce legal whisky on a large scale, a choice which forced Smith to arm himself against the threat of attack from the illicit distillers in the region.
A second challenge came in the form of the neighbouring whisky producers in the Glen (and outside the Glen) when they attempted to use the Glenlivet name to market their own whisky. With the courts on his side, Smith forced his neighbours to relinquish the name and today Glenlivet remains one of the most renowned whiskies in the world. As the best selling Scotch in the United States, Glenlivet enjoys a huge support for its whisky. A huge range of bottlings have appeared at auction and the choice for collectors is wide.
The Glenlivet 21 Year Old Archive is a batch produced whisky using only hand-selected casks. It is a complex whisky with sherried and wood notes integrating seamlessly with the aromatic palette. Let the pleasure linger late into the night.
Colour: amber with sparkling copper shades.
Nose: opulent, mature. Sherry influence. An intricate array of fruit and wood. Christmas cake-like, sultanas, Maraschino cherry, thick-cut marmalade. Oak panels in an old church, a cedary touch. Balsamic spices, Cubèbe pepper. A hint of eucalyptus, tropical hardwood. Oak soon gives way to malty notes. Fruit and fibre cereal bowl, toasted granary bread. Citrussy freshness, orange and kumquat peel. Some cakey notes, a reminder of Grand Marnier soufflé.
Taste: unctuous. Mouth-coating, almost syrupy. Full-bodied. Sultana cake, ginger biscuits. Oak holds the reins back, releasing a drying spiciness. Cinnamon and ginger, a touch of hot paprika. Walnut and raisins, dark chocolate.
Finish: everlasting, warming. Nutty. Toasted hazelnuts. A full layer of liquorice.
