Invergordon Single Grain Whisky 25 Year Old / Hunter Laing Sovereign

Invergordon Single Grain Whisky 25 Year Old / Hunter Laing Sovereign
Country: Scotland   Region: Lowland
Age: 25 Year Old   Strength: 58.1%
Vintage: 1988   Bottler:
Summary: The Hunter Laing Sovereign Single Grain bottlings are increasingly becoming firm favourites with Whisky enthusiasts around the globe.
Hunter Laing select only the finest casks which have been lying untouched in cold, dark and damp Scottish warehouses for many decades.
Typically their aged Single Grain whiskies have a deliciously sweet and distinctly fruity character as a result of many years in the finest oak casks during maturation.
Nose: rich with spiced sultana and butterscotch concentrate;
Taste: fabulous delivery: arrives silky and soft and immediately explodes into an unbelievable couldron on spices and fruit;
Finish: more mooerish magnificence on a vague fruit and rape seed honey theme;
Balance: ignore the fact this is grain and not malt, just grab yourself a bottle of something rather beautiful.

Strathclyde Single Grain Whisky 36 Year Old / Hunter Laing Sovereign

Age: 36 Year Old   Strength: 58.1%
Vintage: 1977   Bottler:
Summary: The Hunter Laing Sovereign Single Grain bottlings are increasingly becoming firm favourites with Whisky enthusiasts around the globe.
Hunter Laing select only the finest casks which have been lying untouched in cold, dark and damp Scottish warehouses for many decades.
Typically their aged Single Grain whiskies have a deliciously sweet and distinctly fruity character as a result of many years in the finest oak casks during maturation.
Nose: just about enough thickening grain – and alcohol to make this into a whisky. Otherwise the nose is pure cream oloroso, of the fruitiest variety possible;
Taste: the delivery is one mouth coating homage to the gods of sherry, slightly sticky, gently sweetened and dripping in sharp grape and emboldened by a vague but busy spiciness. And so it continues…;
Finish: the finish is all about offering balance as the grape at last punches itself out. The oak come into its own now, a kind of spiced Cadbury’s fruit and nut candy bar;
Balance: those who fell in love with Marcallan all those years back because of its faultlessly silky sherry influence are about to have their hears won again. It’ll be love at first flight…

Bruichladdich / Port-charlotte Islay Barley 2008

Bruichladdich / Port-charlotte Islay Barley 2008
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 50%
Summary: PORT CHARLOTTE ISLAY BARLEY REPRESENTS A MILESTONE. FOR THE FIRST TIME, PERHAPS IN THE ISLAND’S HISTORY, A HEAVILY-PEATED SINGLE MALT HAS BEEN DISTILLED USING ISLAY-GROWN BARLEY.
The wind-driven rain that lashes Islay's fields, and the Atlantic air breathed by the casks as they mature by the shores of Loch Indaal, gives the whisky its signature salty, citrus tang.
Harvested in Sepetember 2008 from the farms at Coull, Kynagarry, Island, Rockside, Starchmill & Sunderland, peated to 40 PPM, then distilled in December of the same year, this is a whisky of flawless provenance. A true Ileach.
Character: Absolutely flawless construction and balance. Young, confident, zesty and absolutely delightful, the texture is smooth, succulent and stimulating.
Colour: Gilded lily.
Nose: Totally disarming considering the age of the spirit. It opens with bracken and bluebells, then the warm crisp peat-dried barley with the smokiness drifting sensuously from the glass shadowed by a salt sea breeze. The brilliant aroma of toasted oak sugars combines with the succulent soft fruits from slow distillation. You will find guava, papaya and kiwi with a squeeze of lemon. It’s feisty, it’s fresh, it’s smoky, sweet, minty and marine.
Palate: The warmth of the spirit is impressive, not aggressive. It’s incredible. You have the dryness of the peat smoke together with soft fruits splashed with sea spray, all held in a crunchy basket of caramelised wood sugars sprinkled with lemon and pepper. It is a rare and special experience to taste a spirit that is 100% Islay, but also shining through is the artisanal skill of our distillers who, using the original Victorian equipment, are creating the most exciting single malts in the world today.
Finish: Parting from a special one is never easy, especially when you have enjoyed their company, lingering with every drop in the glass. Kick back and relax – the aromatics and flavours will stay with you for some time.
Mood: Enjoy your spiritual visit to Islay, this magical rock in the Atlantic Ocean where our single malts sleep to the sound of the sea.

Bruichladdich / Octomore 063/ 258 Ppm Islay Barley 2009

Bruichladdich / Octomore 063/ 258 Ppm Islay Barley 2009
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 64%
Summary: FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME WE ARE PROUD TO RELEASE OCTOMORE WHISKY DISTILLED FROM 100% ISLAY BARLEY AND HARVESTED IN 2008 BY FARMER JAMES BROWN AT LORGBA, A SINGLE FIELD ON HIS OCTOMORE FARM.
Peated to a stratospheric 258ppm, the highest ever released in the industry, this extraordinary dram embodies its island origins and carries its phenol count with an effortless grace.
High on the hill above Loch Indaal, Octomore faces the rage of Atlantic weather systems and once housed its own farm distillery, most likely producing a very heavily peated spirit from home-grown barley.
In homage to its origins, this is Octomore of Octomore.
Character: Mesmerising in its potency – with perfect balance. The texture is like warm honey, the taste rich with a depth of character that can only be found on Islay.
Colour: Autumn sunshine – citrine.
Nose: It opens with the call of the sea, the thundering west coast waves driving a gentle mist onto the moorland and tempting the wild plants to release their unique aromas. Notes of myrtle, meadowsweet, mint and heather flowers drift across the nose. Wild thyme and red clover dance in perfect harmony with the strong uplifting peatiness of the Islay grown barley. It’s exhilarating, and seriously dramatic.
Palate: When the heat of the peat fires cool there is a spontaneous detonation of soft red grapes, cherries, Russian toffee, bitter chocolate, maple syrup and mellow oak. It is a taste like no other, a whisky cut loose, unhindered, unchanged. This is sorcery.
Finish: Long and strong, it warms the soul and lifts the heart. It evokes memories of those early years when the sweat of men instilled the spirit with a unique character. Join us as we look to the past, celebrating our Islay DNA while journeying into the future in a never-ending quest for the rainbow’s end.
Mood: The flavours just keep evolving to the point where it is driving you crazy with joy and you just want to tell the world what is happening. Relax and keep it to yourself – it’s not for sharing and when the glass is empty you will feel like the ultimate warrior.

 Caol Ila / Distillers Edition

Caol Ila / Distillers Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 43%
Summary: Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.
This extraordinarily stylish and complex expression of Caol Ila has been double-matured in carefully selected Moscatel casks. The wood is not over-evident and instead balances perfectly with this richly flavoured single malt.
Appearance: Clear gold.
Nose: Wonderfully concentrated pure, clean Caol Ila – peaty and medicinal, with rich fruit, spicy and fragrant. With water, the fragrant smokiness comes singing through.
Body: Medium.
Palate: Sweetness and maltiness strike first, then are quickly overwhelmed by peat smoke and intense, clean, crisp flavours. Caol Ila’s signature smoky bonfires are here, and build to quite a size. Overall, drying, in a beautifully balanced, complex, elegant development, complemented with cinnamon spice.
Finish: Long, rounded, robust and multi-layered.

 Lagavulin / Distillers Edition / 1996

Lagavulin / Distillers Edition / 1996
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 43%
Vintage: 1996   Bottler:
Summary: A much sought-after single malt with the massive peat-smoke that's typical of southern Islay – but also offering a dryness that turns it into a truly interesting dram.
Lagavulin is an intensely flavoured, smoky-sweet single malt with seaweed flavours and a huge finish, aged in oak casks for at least sixteen years.
Appearance: Deep amber gold.
Nose: Intensely flavoured, peat smoke with iodine and seaweed and a rich, deep sweetness.
Body: Full
Palate: A rich, dried fruit sweetness with clouds of smoke and strong, barley-malt flavours, warming with an intense flavour. At the back of the mouth is an explosion of peppery smoke.
Finish: Huge, long, warming and peppery with a distinct appetising sweetness.

 Talisker / Distillers Edition / 2012 Release

Talisker / Distillers Edition / 2012 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: Isle of Sky
Age:    Strength: 45.8%
Vintage: 2001   Bottler:
Summary: “Crisp peat at first then softens to enormous richness in the mouth. There’s sweet, roasty malt with a heathery dryness. The sherry notes keep back some of the usual Talisker pepperiness. In its place is luscious, slightly oily sweetness – with ripe, juicy fruit and vanilla”
Donald John McEwen Process Operator
The Distillers Edition is unique: after its usual aging process in American oak casks, the whisky undergoes a second maturation in casks previously holding sherry. The result is older, sweeter and richer than the regular bottlings.
Appearance: Chestnut brown.
Nose: Sharp and well focussed; no lingering, rambling smoke here. A sultana sweetness. One of the most tantalising sherry noses – certainly the cleanest
Body: Full
Palate: Crisp peat then softens to great richness in the mouth. Sweet, roasty malt with heathery dryness. Sherry notes keep back some pepper. In its place is luscious, slightly oily sweetness with juicy fruit and vanilla.
Finish: Some very deep cocoa notes, vanilla and lingering quite earthy peat. An enormously chewable single malt, with sweetness having the edge on dryness.

BENRIACH DISTILLERY
FOR DISCERNING INDIVIDUALS:It’s not often a long kept secret is revealed in the world of Single Malt Scotch Whisky – but here is a true discovery! Since 1898, the BenRiach distillery has very quietly been producing quality Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which has only ever been enjoyed in very small quantities, by a few discerning individuals who have been fortunate enough to come across a bottle.
Today, BenRiach continues to produce its very special Single Malt Whiskies, as an Independent Distiller.
UNIQUE AMONGST MANY:The BenRiach Distillery is located in the ‘Heart of Speyside’, between the village of Rothes and the town of Elgin, in the North-East of Scotland. The Spey Valley, in which the BenRiach Distillery was built by John Duff in 1898, is home to many of Scotland’s great whiskies, but BenRiach has its own uniqueness borne from the particular methods and skills of the men who craft the whisky, the ingredients they use, the distinctive copper stills and high quality barrels selected for maturation.
“I am often asked what makes BenRiach special. There is no one thing, but the starting point has to be reputation and legacy. Then you must take the astonishing skills of the men who craft the whisky, the ingredients we use, the copper stills, the high-quality casks, our rich and varied inventory and our broad range of peated and non-peated expressions. To these you must add independence, enthusiasm, creativity and a real passion for whisky craftsmanship. As a result you get what I call a “heavenly explosion” – a sensational, unique, complex tour de force.

Age: 36 Year Old   Strength: 58.1%
Summary: The Hunter Laing Sovereign Single Grain bottlings are increasingly becoming firm favourites with Whisky enthusiasts around the globe.
Hunter Laing select only the finest casks which have been lying untouched in cold, dark and damp Scottish warehouses for many decades.
Typically their aged Single Grain whiskies have a deliciously sweet and distinctly fruity character as a result of many years in the finest oak casks during maturation.
Nose: Sweet powdery vanilla rich fruits with light floral notes combined with toffee to give smooth balanced nose.
Palate: These rich fruity caramel flavours intensify on the palate to give a creamy bodied taste with dark chocolate highlights.
Finish: long lingering pleasant aftertaste of toffee and a wisp of oak wood delights.

Shackletons Whisky - Mackinlays Rare Old Highland Malt

Shackletons Whisky – Mackinlays Rare Old Highland Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highland
Age:    Strength: 47.30%
Summary: Whyte & Mackay has successfully recreated the century-old whisky buried under the Antarctic ice by famous explorer Ernest Shackleton.
The company’s master blender Richard Paterson spent a painstaking eight weeks marrying and blending a range of malts to get an exact replica of the 100-year-old Mackinlay’s liquid.
And according to one independent expert, he has got the copy exactly right.
Renowned whisky writer Dave Broom is the only other person in the world to taste both the original whisky and Whyte & Mackay’s new liquid.
He said: “The Shackleton whisky is not what I expected at all, and not what anyone would have expected. It’s so light, so fresh, so delicate and still in one piece – it’s a gorgeous whisky.”
“It proves that even way back then so much care, attention and thought went into whisky-making.”
“I think the replication is absolutely bang on. Richard has done a great job as it’s a very tricky whisky to replicate, because you have this delicacy, subtlety and the smoke just coming through.”
“The sweetness, fragrance and spice, and the subtle smoke, are all there in the replica. I’m blown away.”
The Shackleton replica will cost £100, with 5% from every sale being donated back to the Antarctic Heritage Trust, the New Zealand charity responsible for finding and uncovering the original whisky. If all 50,000 bottles sell out the Trust will receive £250,000.
Trust chief executive Nigel Watson said: “From start to finish it’s taken almost four years to safely extract the whisky crate from site and then Antarctica, thaw it in museum conditions, secure permits and complete scientific analysis in Scotland . I am delighted that Whyte & Mackay recognise the hard work and value of the Trust’s conservation mission in Antarctica by making this very generous and welcome donation."
Richard Paterson said that matching the whisky really tested his blending skills, but it was a true labour of love.
“It was a real privilege getting to handle, nose and taste such a rare and beautiful bottle of whisky. The quality, purity and taste of this 100-year-old spirit was amazing. The biggest surprise was the light flavour and the clear, almost vibrant colour of the liquid. I hope I have done our forefathers and Ernest Shackleton proud with the replica.
I would like to thank the Trust in particular for their patience, their expertise and their hard work. They fully deserve the substantial funds this special bottle will generate.”
Tasting Notes: The replica Mackinlay contains whisky from a range of highland malts, including Glen Mhor, which was the original Mackinlay’s distillery before it closed in 1983.
The 47.3% ABV whisky has a light honey and straw gold colour with shimmering highlights.
The nose is soft, elegant and refined with delicate aromas of crushed apple, pear and fresh pineapple. It has a whisper of marmalade, cinnamon and a tease of smoke, ginger and muscovado sugar.
The generous strength of the 47.3% whisky, believed to be high to stop the alcohol freezing, gives plenty of impact, but in a mild and warming way. It has whispers of gentle bonfire smoke slowly giving way to spicy rich toffee, treacle and pecan nuts.

Ardbeg - Corryvreckan Single Malt

Ardbeg – Corryvreckan Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 57.1%
Summary: Corryvreckan takes its name from the famous whirlpool that lies to the north of Islay, where only the bravest souls dare to venture. Swirling aromas and torrents of deep, peaty, peppery taste lurk beneath the surface of this beautifully balanced dram.
Like the whirlpool itself, Corryvreckan is not for the faint-hearted!
Colour: Deepest amber.
Aroma: Heady, intense and powerful.
With the first sniff, encounter the deep and turbulent force of Corryvreckan as it pulls you inwards. Swirl the glass and dip your nose into the torrents of tarry ropes, creosote and linseed oil rising from deep within the vortex. As you succumb to its power, a collision of waxy dark chocolate, warm blackcurrants and muscovado sugar pulls you under its spell with a burst of plump cherries and earthy pine needles leaping from its depths.
Swirl water into the glass, and observe the magical collision of whisky and water. As the liquid warms up, the seething cauldron bubbles and bursts, as you edge closer to sniff a pot full of gutsy cayenne-peppered steak and oysters smothered in hot pepper sauce. Salty seasoning brings a briny character with tangy crisp seaweed and smoky bacon swirling on the surface with hints of sweet vanilla, spicy cloves and blueberries.
As the whirlpool narrows and quickens moving ever deeper, surrender to its dangerous depths with the heady force of menthol, treacle and chilli sauce.
Taste: Plunge into the whirlpool and taste the mysterious depths of Corryvreckan. Torrents of taste well up on the palate; deep, peppery and chewy, bombarding the tongue with its intense tastes and textures.
The first plunge brings forth chewy peppered steak soaked in pepper sauce with the tang of crispy seaweed. As you descend deeper, encounter a mouthful of black tarry espresso coffee that coats the palate with rich melted dark fruits (blackcurrants, blueberries and cherries) and bitter almonds. As the taste soaks in deeper, star anise and hickory dry out the palate before a surprise of chalky effervescent violets fizz to the surface.
Finish: Long, deep and remaining powerful into the finish with black tarry coffee, chocolate coated cherries and hot pepper sauce, the lingering memories of your mysterious and daring journey into Corryvreckan.

Ardbeg - Uigeadail Single Malt Whisky

Ardbeg – Uigeadail Single Malt Whisky
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 54.20%
Summary: In 2009, Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible named Ardbeg Uigeadail ‘World Whisky of the Year’ – in praise of its “utter silky brilliance” and “complexity on a level only a handful of distilleries in the world can even dream of reaching.”
Ardbeg Uigeadail (pronounced ‘Oog-a-dal’) is a special vatting that marries Ardbeg’s traditional deep, smoky notes with luscious, raisiny tones of old ex-Sherry casks. Its non chill-filtered at high strength, which retains maximum flavour and gives more body and added depth.
Colour: Deepest gold.
Aroma: Rich and weighty with heady and smoky aromatics, this expression of Ardbeg is both intensely flavoured and perfectly integrated. At full strength, the initial aroma is a beguiling mix of warm Christmas cake, walnut oil and parma violets fused with fresh ocean spice, cedar and pine needles falling from the Christmas tree. A smouldering smoky coal fire and the deep scent of well-oiled leather brings warmth to the scene. The sweetness of treacle toffees and chocolate-coated raisins bring indulgence through the smoke.
With water, the deep smokiness increases in intensity, reminiscent of a Christmas pudding on fire. Tarry smoke and diesel engine oil enter the room bringing smells of an age gone by. Rich flowering currants and warm baked banana and walnut bread are served with simmering mocha espresso.
Taste: Full flavoured and rich with a deep mouth-coating texture, the taste is an intriguing balance between sweet, spicy and deep smoky flavours.
The flavour is initially sweet as Christmas cake begins to soak into the tongue. A burst of winter spices sets off a smoky-spicy explosion countered by a sumptuous mid-palate of honey glazed smoked food and chewy treacle. Waves of deep smoky tones and rich aromas build up on the palate like a fine Montecristo cigar.
Finish: Amazingly long and chewy with lingering raisiny, deep mocha tones and rich aromatic smoke into the perfectly integrated finish.

Glen Albyn - 1976 Gordon & Macphail Rare Vintage

Glen Albyn – 1976 Gordon & Macphail Rare Vintage
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 36 Years Old.   Strength: 43%
Summary: The original Glen Albyn Distillery was founded in 1844 by the Inverness Provost at the time, James Sutherland. Three years later, fire destroyed the main building of the distillery and production did not resume until 1852. However, misfortune continued when the owner went bankrupt another three years later and the distillery closed. Although used briefly as a flour mill, Glen Albyn lay silent until 1884 when it was purchased by A.M. Gregory who rebuilt the distillery, kept the same name and had his own railway which linked to the main line.
During World War I, Glen Albyn was closed once again as it was occupied by the American military and used as a U.S. Naval base. In 1920, Charles Mackinlay and the distillery manager, John Birnie, acquired the Glen Albyn distillery. They also owned the neighbouring Glen Mhor Distillery. In 1972, Glen Albyn was acquired by DCL.
Due to cutbacks, DCL closed the Glen Albyn Distillery in 1983. A few years later, the distillery was demolished to make way for new development.
Nose: salty and nippy. And the theme thunders into an early Kentuckian drawl, with red liquorice and hickory prominent;
Taste: I am shaking my head in disbelief. Not through disappointment, but wonder! How can something of this antiquity still fill your mouth with so much juice? The barley still offers a degree of grassiness, though this is camouflaged by the softest bourbon characters I have seen in a long time. The honeycomb is in molten form, as is the vanilla which appears to carry with it a fabulous blend of avocado pear and ulmo honey;
Finish: a pathetic degree of oaky bitterness tries to interrupt, but it is swept aside by the residual and very complex sugars. There remains some spicy activity and even some Kentuckian red liquorice and hickory, but that South American honey really does the business;
Balance: wow! My eyes nearly popped out of my head when I spotted this in my sample room. Glen Albyns come round as rarely as Scotsman winning Wimbledon. Well, almost. When I used to buy this (from Gordon and MacPhail in their early Connoisseur’s Choice Range, as it happens) when the distillery was still alive (just) I always found it an interesting if occasionally aggressive dram. This masterpiece, though, is something else entirely. And the delivery really does take us to places where only the truly great whiskies go…
