Benromach Malt Whisky Shares the Secret with Sweden

Three Swedish whisky ambassadors are set to share the secret of Speyside’s smallest distillery following a unique programme seeing them become Honorary Stillmen of Benromach for a day.

The ladies are winners of the inaugural Benromach Fellowship Award 2011 which allows them to travel to the distillery and be exclusively trained in the production of its single malt whisky by its two master distillers. The Benromach Fellowship award recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the promotion and endorsement of Scotch Whisky in Sweden.

Whisky bar manager, Susan Stenström, restaurateur, Helena Hugo and popular whisky magazine ‘Allt Om Whisky’ editor, Emma Andersson, will learn firsthand the art of whisky making when they take part in milling, mashing and distilling. They will also hand fill casks which will mature at the distillery for years to come.

The ladies won the fellowship for their enthusiasm and dedication to whisky which has seen them share their knowledge and experience with others in their home country.

Michael Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of Benromach Distillery, said:

“It’s an honour to be sharing our expertise with such highly regarded international whisky ambassadors. Taking part in our Honorary Stillman programme is the best way of fully understanding the hands-on innovative processes used in producing whisky at Benromach.

“Sweden has a huge whisky following and is becoming an increasingly popular market for Benromach. We hope the ladies will share their experiences of their scholarship and our single malt whisky with friends and family when they are back home.”

Susan Stenström is a well known whisky authority in Sweden who through her passion and dedication has created a unique whisky bar with her own personal stamp at Friiberghs Herrgård. Susan regularly organises whisky weekends aimed at encouraging people to discover and enjoy whisky. Excited to be taking part in the programme she said:

“As a huge whisky fan it’s been a real opportunity to come to Scotland and have such a personal experience in the production of this great single malt. Being a small distillery we got a real insight into a typical working day and the expertise and skill that is involved in making Benromach. Not many people get a chance to be so hands on and learn direct from the master stillman. It’s been a once in a lifetime trip.”

Restaurateur and whisky ambassador, Helena Hugo, has created a venue for whisky lovers in the middle of the Swedish countryside. Bredaryd Värdshus is a Mecca for connoisseurs offering great food, a micro-brewery and an excellent whisky selection. Helena ensures her staff can deliver exceptional customer service by arranging for them to attend whisky education courses in Sweden and Scotland.

Emma Andersson is editor of one of the world’s best whisky magazines, Allt Om Whisky. Emma’s focus on delivering quality news and features from the world of whisky, is one of the major reasons why Sweden has some of the world’s most informed and passionate whisky enthusiasts.

Unique and collectable Benromach whisky to go under the hammer

November 18, 2011 by Gary 1 Comment

The Signed Bottle Of Benromach Single Cask

The Signed Bottle Of Benromach Single Cask

A unique and collectable bottle of signed whisky from Speyside’s smallest distillery will go under the hammer this week in an online auction with proceeds going to a local rescue charity.

Distillery manager, Keith Cruickshank, and infamous whisky blogger, Ralf Mitchell, commonly known as ‘Ralfy’, have signed the bottle of Benromach single cask for a charitable auction being hosted by Scotch Whisky Auctions, who have kindly agreed to waive their auction fees.

The money raised from the sale will go to Findhorn based Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation (M.I.R.O) who are an independent rescue service manned entirely by volunteers.

Keith Cruikshank said he expected the online auction, which started yesterday (17 November 2011) and runs until the 27th of November, to generate global interest.

He said: “This is a very unique bottle of Benromach Single malt whisky hand bottled by Ralfy at our distillery. It is the only bottle to be bottled at this time so we hope it will be a hit with collectors and whisky enthusiasts across the globe. The proceeds of the auction, made possible by Scotch Whisky Auctions, will go towards making a splash in Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation’s funds, which are based only a few miles away from our distillery.”

The winner will also get an exclusive selection of Benromach merchandise including a sample bottle of whisky, two blender glasses, key ring, polo shirt, wallet, stow bag, calendar and a newsletter signed by David and Michael Urquhart.

Ralfy will also donate a memory stick containing all the v-logs created for the auction, including a personalised v-log to the winner and signed tasting notes.

Simon Paterson from the Moray Inshore Rescue Organisation said: “We are very grateful to Benromach for donating a bottle of their finest whisky to be auctioned online.”

Previous charitable auctions of similar products have seen funds of around £400 raised. Anyone interested in bidding for this unique bottle of whisky can make a bid by visiting www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com.

About M.I.R.O
MIRO is one of around 50 independent rescue services that operate around the UK. It is manned entirely by volunteers and funded by the generosity of the general public and local business. Every penny raised by MIRO goes directly into the charities funds with nothing deducted for third parties or administration.

A number of warehouse roofs collapsed under the weight, leaving the oak casks exposed to the winter sky. In temperatures of -19°C, distillery staff worked to clear the snow. Snow Phoenix was created by marrying together whiskies from the damaged warehouses, natural strength and non-chill filtered casks of different ages and finishes, including American oak and Oloroso sherry. Given the name Snow Phoenix, this cask strength limited edition release was only bottled in 2010.

GLENFIDDICH UNVEILS FIRST-EVER VATTED VINTAGE RESERVE

November 10, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glenfiddich Brand Ambassadors gather to select limited edition bottling

Glenfiddich Brand Ambassadors gather to select limited edition bottling

Glenfiddich, the world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky, today announced the release of the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve, Glenfiddich’s first-ever vatted Vintage Reserve. After the pioneering launch of Snow Phoenix, which was created by combining Glenfiddich whiskies of different strengths, ages and finishes, Glenfiddich is delighted to be releasing another vatted single malt Scotch whisky.

Glenfiddich’s largest-ever selection panel consisted of Glenfiddich’s Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s Global Brand Ambassador, Ian Millar, 13 highly skilled Glenfiddich Brand Ambassadors and the owner of the world’s largest collection of Glenfiddich whisky, Hans-Henrik Hansen.

Marking an adventurous change to the selection process, rather than sampling whisky from single casks, the panel carefully nosed and tasted three exceptional vatted vintage whiskies dating from 1973, 1974 and 1975. After careful consideration and in-depth debate, the panel selected the 1974 Glenfiddich.

The nose of the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve is rich and oaky with vibrant vanilla sweetness and an intriguing hint of polished leather and liquorice. With the addition of a little water there is a burst of fresh fruit and spice – orange marmalade, ripe berries, cinnamon, nutmeg and caramelised pear.

The taste is initially very sweet with a vanilla toffee character. The oak tannin develops with time giving a pleasing, oily texture and a slightly drier flavour. With water, it becomes velvety soft and mellow with beautiful layers of fruit, spice, oak and the merest hint of smoke.

Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich Malt Master, said: “We’re delighted to unveil the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve – not only because it’s our first ever vatted Vintage Reserve, but also because it was selected by a panel of Glenfiddich’s passionate Brand Ambassadors. Being surrounded by a panel of judges who are so passionate and knowledgeable about whisky was a fantastic and thoroughly rewarding experience. One thousand limited-edition bottles of the distinctly Glenfiddich whisky, which has rich, spicy oak notes and an amazing vibrancy for whisky of this age, will go on sale in September.”

Jamie Milne, Brand Ambassador for Glenfiddich in the UK, said; “Joining Glenfiddich Brand Ambassadors from all over the world to select this year’s Vintage Reserve was a once in a lifetime experience. It’s wonderful to see that the cask we selected this summer is now going on sale all around the world. We hope people enjoy it as much as we did.”

Benromach wins Gold at New York tasting awards

November 7, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

 Benromach 10 Years Old

Benromach 10 Years Old

Benromach’s flagship Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Benromach 10 Years Old been awarded a gold medal TheFiftyBest.com in New York City.

Tasted among 19 other whiskies, a gold medal was awarded in a Single Malt Scotch 10 to 12 year old tasting event in recognition of its “spicy, pure and velvety” flavour.

The accolade adds to the growing list of awards for the whiskies from Speyside’s smallest working distillery and the increasing success of Benromach across the UK and internationally.
Benromach 30 Years Old won a bronze award at The Scottish Field Whisky Challenge in Edinburgh on Thursday night (November 3). Judges described it as the “perfect after dinner whisky”.

TheFiftyBest.com rating the finest in wines and spirits turned their attention to Single Malt Scotch Whisky this year for the first time. Malt whisky aficionados, wine and spirits writers, retailers and bartenders were the judges at the formal tasting in NYC.

Using professional criteria, the scotch whiskies were served “blindly” one at a time, and rated on a 1-5 point scoring system with 5 being the best. After totalling up the scores, the Single Malts were ranked according to the total scores received.

Under the management of Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach is handcrafted by just two experienced distillers. Using their unique skills they have developed the distillery’s portfolio which includes the popular Benromach 10 Year Old and Benromach Organic – the world’s first fully certified organic single malt.

Gordon & MacPhail’s Miltonduff 1969 also walked away with a silver award at the Scottish Field Whisky Challenge which was held at Number 12 Picardy Place in Edinburgh.

David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, said: “To be recognised both at home and abroad is a significant achievement. The international appeal of Benromach is continuing to grow and it is exciting to see our range of whiskies being honoured at respected events like these.”

TALISKER SPONSORS WORLD’S TOUGHEST ROWING RACE

November 5, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge

TALISKER, the only Single Malt Scotch Whisky made in the Isle of Skye, is now the title sponsor of the of the Woodvale Atlantic Challenge.

The Atlantic Challenge, which starts next month, is the world’s toughest rowing race. It will be known as The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. The race is biennial; the Talisker sponsorship will run for at least the 2011 and the 2013 races.

The 2011 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge starts on 4 December in the Spanish port of San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canary Islands and follows the ‘Columbus Route’, west-bound across the mid-Atlantic to Port St Charles in Barbados.

The Challenge is international: crews are entering from Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden and the USA.

The race is 2,549 nautical miles (2,933 regular miles); but when bad weather and adverse conditions are factored in, most teams will row well over 3,000 miles during their Atlantic crossing. Competitors are expected to arrive in the Caribbean from mid-January onwards. Not all teams succeed in finishing the crossing.

For Talisker, Ben Booth, Western Europe Brand Manager for Talisker, said:

“For many of its adorers, Talisker, made by the sea in the Isle of Skye, represents passion, confidence, challenge and achievement – uncompromising emotions that will characterise the daring participants in this fierce and demanding endeavour.

“The smell and taste of Talisker instantly connect you with the rugged environment where it is made– like a warm welcome from a wild sea. So we are proud to be involved and wish all the competitors the best of luck.”

Woodvale Challenge organiser Gemma Campbell said:

“We are thrilled to be able to announce Talisker Whisky as title sponsor for the race. The philosophy and the values that Talisker embody are a great symbol for the race and we are proud to have their involvement. All the company staff and race entrants are excited to be part of this big adventure with Talisker at the helm!”

Benromach to Share the Secret with the Arts

November 5, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromach, the Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is pleased to announce that it sponsored contemporary London art gallery Beers.Lambert’s production Systems Beyond Certainty.

The show at Project Space on Vyner Street in London ran on November 2 and 3.

Systems Beyond Certainty presents constructs of time, nature and space as structured, ideological concepts that provide simultaneously real and imagined delineations to our perception of the natural world.
Five artists consider these concepts as metaphor and reality, offering a re-evaluation of their surroundings in a context that provides contemplation for the relationship between the definite and the imagined.

The exhibition is conceived through several distinct themes: the natural world, the utopian versus the dystopian, the spatial, the psychological, and the futuristic sublime.
The work drives pertinent questions intoabstract representations of The Present and The Future in lieu of a constructed versus natural world – the status of normalcy or the pursuit of constructed perfection.
While artists such as Kevin Cooley and Peter Matthews seem to offer views of the constructed or natural works in crisis, other artists such as Gillian Lawler appear to present re-affirmations of these themes through the representations of the future.

Commenting on the deal, David Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said:
“The Beers.Lambert is the perfect partner for Benromach. It is a pleasure to be associated with such a contemporary art gallery that features really cutting edge talent from around the world, which we feel reflects many of the distinctive qualities of the various expressions or our malt whisky. We look forward to the success of Systems Beyond Certainty and to be able to share the secret of Benromach with the audience.”

All attendees attending the performance were invited to sample Benromach Ten Year, Benromach Organic or Benromach Peat Smoke and received a miniature Benromach 10 year old to take away.

Director of Beers.Lambert, Kurt Beers said: “I wanted to combine my love of whisky and fine art which is why I have invited around 200 fine art enthusiasts to a private viewing and reception at our London gallery.
I esteem my gallery for exhibiting only the finest in emergent and stimulating visual arts internationally and I believe Benromach would be an exceptional compliment to the clean, crisp, contemporary feel of the work on exhibit.”

About Benromach

Established in 1898, Benromach distillery changed hands many times and was virtually derelict when bought by Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. Drawing on generations of whisky expertise, the company carried out a painstaking refurbishment, and the distillery was officially re-opened by Prince Charles in 1998.
Just two men hand-craft Benromach using the finest Scottish barely and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They fill new spirit into the highest quality casks before being left to mature at the distillery for many years. The Benromach portfolio includes the award winning Benromach 10 Years Old and the first fully certified organic single malt – Benromach Organic.

Benromach Ten Years Old

Benromach Ten Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least ten years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

Benromach Traditional

A rich and mellow single malt with fruit and malty tones, balanced with a hint of smoke.

Benromach Peat Smoke
Full bodied, intense and challenging with a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Origins

A series of special bottlings crafted to highlight how small changes in the art of whisky-making can help to shape the character of the final single malt.
