Talisker - 30 Year Old Single Malt - 2010 Release

Talisker – 30 Year Old Single Malt – 2010 Release
Country: Scotland   Region: IsleofSkye
Age: 30 Year Old.   Strength: 57.30%
Summary: A limited edition, natural cask strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
From the only distillery on the Isle of Skye.
Fifteenth and equal oldest limited release to be offered by the distillery.
From American & European Oak refill casks.
Interesting to compare with four previous bottlings of this age in the same series, all of them whiskies of great dignity, subtle nuance and easy balance.
Fewer than 3,000 individually numbered bottles available world-wide.
A consistently excellent, mild-mannered Talisker perfect for more subtle tastes.
DESCRIPTION: A more mature, reserved Talisker which is also confident, consistent and clearly in its prime. An interesting and complex whisky, with aromas that change constantly and a lively taste; remains a Talisker through and through and is an excellent example.
APPEARANCE: Full gold. Good beading.
NOSE: Mildnose-feel. Very reserved ,and slow. At first, teasing fruit acidity (red apple skins) and dried fruits, with sweeter notes (rum toffee, chocolate brownies). Quickly then, sooty smoke (a burned out peat fire) with, after a while, alluring, aromatic spices (frankincense, clove, cedar) and polished oak, followed by more fruit, now boiled sweets. Water makes it more maritime, with iodine, menthol and beach scents, but there are also notes of milk chocolate and soft vanilla toffee in the smoky development.
BODY: Medium.
PALATE: Drinks well at full strength. Slow but consistent, with autumn berries and dried fruit. Cherry stones. Cooling at first, then becoming hot and lively. Water (add only a little) brings up a pleasant smooth texture. It’s now quite sweet and again cooling to start (tart au chocolat) then warming overall, with some salt, a trace of acidity and some very measured, slightly sooty, smoke.
FINISH: Long, with roasted malt, the ghost of black pepper, and some nutmeg in the smoky and savoury aftertaste.

Tamdhu - 21 Year Old - Old & Rare Edition

Tamdhu – 21 Year Old – Old & Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 53.6%
Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers’ Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water is added to reduce its strength, as the Angel’s share has already taken care of that. No caramel, colouring is added, so that you can see it’s pure and natural colour. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration in the old fashioned and traditional style. By so doing, they leave in the entire Distillers’ preferred qualities apparent on the nose, palate and finish – self evident when you remove the cork. As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated.
Sweetly sherried – full of thick dark juicy fruited quality with molasses and a late barley gristiness all apparent on the nose. Palatewise – anticipate some raisin, grape, date and citrus hues plus vanilla pods all running to a soft, subtle sugary/oaked finish.

Tomintoul - 14 Year Old Single Malt

Tomintoul – 14 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 14 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Tomintoul distillery was founded by the whisky broking firms W&S Strong and Hay & MacLeod. In 1974, the number of stills were doubled from 2 to 4, when its first single malt was marketed. For a number of years Tomintoul Single Malt was renowned for its perfume shaped bottle. The distillery is 8 miles from Tomintoul village which is used by walkers and climbers as a base camp. Nose: curiously, there is a sea-weed saltiness attached to this one: not exactly what you expect to find from a malt made and (I think) matured in the centre of the Scottish Highlands. But it adds a compellingly attractive – if eyebrow raising – element to this delicately framed and gently structured, lightly honeyed malt fest. The oak splendidly keeps within the spirit of the style; Taste: just how many variations on a honeyed theme can you get? Here I count at least five, each wave coming in after the other with just the odd nip and tuck or expansion of its intensity; the very faintest smoke is detectable and just when the natural caramels appear to be getting too excited, the malt re-establishes itself; Finish: medium length, bur sheer quality all the way: Bird’s custard mixing dreamily with drier, playfully spiced, oaky vanillas. The lightest of oils spreads the grassy, sharper malts to ensure a wonderful lightness of touch; Balance: not a single weakness: no bitterness, no off notes, no caramels other than those naturally from the oak, no sulphur. Just magnificent whisky bottled exactly the way it is meant to be. An absolute corker from this little-known but outstanding distillery and one of the most delicately complex distillery bottlings of the year.

Port Ellen - 32 Year Old - Old & Rare Edition

Port Ellen – 32 Year Old – Old & Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age: 32 Year Old   Strength: 54.80%
Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water is added to reduce its strength, as the Angels share has already taken care of that. No caramel, colouring is added, so that you can see its pure and natural colour. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration in the old fashioned and traditional style. As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated. Opens richly spiced, carrying a fresh leather character – still surprisingly peaty for its age with an earthy, smoked grist character. The palate is initially sweetly peated and runs to a smoke, toffee and spiced character – each pushing for more attention until they harmoniously join in the long finish. Suntory - Hakushu Bourbon Barrel

Suntory – Hakushu Bourbon Barrel
Country: Japanese   Region: Japanese
Age: Average 10-12 years.   Strength: 48.2%
Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Hakushu key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Hakushu Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Hakushu malts. The distillery where these malts are crafted lies nested deep within the Hakushu forest, 700 meters above sea level, in the shadow of the southern Japanese Alps’ Mt. Kaikomagatake. The area’s cold climate is an essential ingredient that gives Hakushu malts their mild refreshing taste and crisp citrus aromas with a distinctive vanilla flavour that can be found only in a bourbon barrel-aged whisky. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.

Suntory – Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel
Country: Japanese   Region: Japanese
Age: Average 10-12 years.   Strength: 48.2%
Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Yamazaki malts. The whisky is cradled in bourbon barrels and stored in aging cellars located in Japan’s Yamazaki and Oumi regions until it reaches the peak of maturity. It is here that nature paints a changing backdrop with a palette of seasonal colours and provides a warm moist climate to slowly nurture the whisky within the barrel. The result is a distinctively Japanese whisky with an uncommon aroma and smooth, lingering sweet flavour that only a bourbon barrel can impart. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.

Mosstowie - 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition

Mosstowie – 33 Year Old Gordon Macphail Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 33 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: For over 25 years Miltonduff Distillery produced 2 different Single Malt Whiskies. In 1955 due to the increased demand within Hiram Walker for different styles of whisky, a chemical engineer, Alistair Cunningham designed the Lomond Still. This type of still had a wide neck which housed three rectifying plates. These plates were used to vary the amount of reflux that took place within the still thus altering the spirit produced. The plates could either be filled with cool liquid or left dry. They could be rotated – the horizontal position would maximise reflux while the vertical position would reduce reflux. Due to increased demand for Ballantines Blend in the 1980s, the Mosstowie stills were altered to produce Miltonduff – the key component of Ballantines.
AROMA WITHOUT WATER: Freshly washed wool and hessian. With hints of polished oak, beeswax and orange peel.
TASTE WITHOUT WATER: A sweet liquorice and aniseed flavour. Pepper and ash notes linger.
AROMA WITH WATER: Creamy hot chocolate aromas with spiced orange and cardamom notes.
TASTE WITH WATER: Cinnamon and Clove influences with hints of Cedar wood.

Oban - 1995 Distillers Edition

Oban – 1995 Distillers Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 15 Year Old.   Strength: 43%
Summary: Oban is the frontier between the West Highlands and the Islands; the meeting place between land and sea. A perfect, sheltered harbour makes it the principal seaport for the Isles and the capital of the West Highlands.
It has a mild, temperate climate, warmed by the Gulf Stream and washed (too often, some might say) by the soft rain that often falls hereabouts. This misty, maritime character, with a background of heather and peat, is perfectly echoed in the malt whisky produced at Oban.
Oban is made using only the finest barley, malted to the distillerys own particular specification. The tiny lantern-shaped copper pot stills are among the smallest in Scotland; their rich, fruity malt is then slowly condensed in wooden worm tubs that sit outside among the rooftops, before being aged in oak casks for at least 14 years.
1995 Distillers Edition: Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.
The founders of Oban distillery were entrepreneurs who imported and exported goods for which they could sense a demand. They would have approved of the Spanish influence brought to bear in this Montilla Fino cask wood finish.
A seriously complex whisky of the highest order – a glorious zesty nose and plenty of sweet fruit complemented by salt and chewy, roasty caramel malt.
DISTILLED: 1995.
BOTTLED: 2010.
APPEARANCE: Amber, rose-hued.
NOSE: Outstanding. Fruity and pungent; sea salt with crushed grapes, orange zest and hints of smoke. Massively complex.
BODY: Full, rich.
PALATE: Most explosive Oban ever. Soft malt then wave upon wave of delicate yet rich fruit notes on a tide of brine.
FINISH: Sweetened Jamaican coffee and oak, with an attractive malt-biscuit effect as it dies down.

Traditionally crafted using techniques that other distillers have long abandoned, this winner of numerous gold medals at the most prestigious international competitions is a high water-mark of quality spirits.

Old Pulteney - 17 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 17 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 17 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: The 17-year-old predominantly features ex-bourbon maturation, with the addition of spirit that has been wholly matured in Spanish wood ex-sherry casks, predominantly Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso. This adds a subtle depth and complexity to the whisky, making for an outstanding after-dinner drink.
Nose: Sweet with traces of apples and pears: slightly woody with a hint of butterscotch.

Old Pulteney - 21 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 21 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: As with the 17-year-old, with this expression they marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. The crucial difference, however, is that the ex-sherry wood in this case is made from American Oak (mostly Fino sherries). This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.
Nose: Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.
Colour: Golden amber with straw highlights.
Taste: Sweet to start with a light fruitiness; hints of honey and vanilla followed by a dry finish.

Glenlivet - 21 Year Old Archive

Glenlivet – 21 Year Old Archive
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 43%
Summary: Sitting in the Glen of the same name, taking its water from the River Livet which feeds into the Spey, Glenlivet has been producing whisky since the days when only small scale domestic production was legal. George Smith (of George & JG Smith) was the first distiller in the Glen to produce legal whisky on a large scale, a choice which forced Smith to arm himself against the threat of attack from the illicit distillers in the region.
A second challenge came in the form of the neighbouring whisky producers in the Glen (and outside the Glen) when they attempted to use the Glenlivet name to market their own whisky. With the courts on his side, Smith forced his neighbours to relinquish the name and today Glenlivet remains one of the most renowned whiskies in the world. As the best selling Scotch in the United States, Glenlivet enjoys a huge support for its whisky. A huge range of bottlings have appeared at auction and the choice for collectors is wide.
The Glenlivet 21 Year Old Archive is a batch produced whisky using only hand-selected casks. It is a complex whisky with sherried and wood notes integrating seamlessly with the aromatic palette. Let the pleasure linger late into the night.
Colour: amber with sparkling copper shades.
Nose: opulent, mature. Sherry influence. An intricate array of fruit and wood. Christmas cake-like, sultanas, Maraschino cherry, thick-cut marmalade. Oak panels in an old church, a cedary touch. Balsamic spices, Cubèbe pepper. A hint of eucalyptus, tropical hardwood. Oak soon gives way to malty notes. Fruit and fibre cereal bowl, toasted granary bread. Citrussy freshness, orange and kumquat peel. Some cakey notes, a reminder of Grand Marnier soufflé.
Taste: unctuous. Mouth-coating, almost syrupy. Full-bodied. Sultana cake, ginger biscuits. Oak holds the reins back, releasing a drying spiciness. Cinnamon and ginger, a touch of hot paprika. Walnut and raisins, dark chocolate.
Finish: everlasting, warming. Nutty. Toasted hazelnuts. A full layer of liquorice.

Bruichladdich - Cuvee 640: Eroica

Bruichladdich – Cuvee 640: Eroica
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: This American-oak-aged Bruichladdich has been further matured in Limousin oak casks from Acquitaine that for many years contained one of the great Eaux de Vie. These casks tannins have added new layers of rich complexity to our own elegant, floral Bruichladdich whisky. This is a spirit to give pause, to reflect on. A spirit as much for the mind as for the palate.
Character: Curvaceous, buxom, captivating yet elegant with a silky texture that is divine.
Colour: Mahogany/ bronze.
Nose: The opening notes are of marinated pears, apricot, mango, spicy apple; then drifts of dark chocolate orange and espresso coffee can be detected together with vanilla-rich toffee. The seductive notes of old style malt whisky rise serenely; warm, reassuring and deceptively potent. The aromatics flirt shamelessly with the senses and then you realise that this is no ordinary spirit – it’s just so wonderfully fragrant. Gentle spices, citrus, dried fruit & herbs pop up like champagne bubbles keeping the mood one of celebration and joy.
Palate: Fantastique! The taste is rich and mellow. Many flavours continue to evolve – rich ripe apple, Turkish delight, soft strawberries, candied almonds and above all others that beguiling maltiness that is the mark of all Bruichladdich spirits. This, plus the coastal marine freshness adds life and vitality arousing the senses to an even higher level. You just know that this is authentic Islay heaven, simultaneously delicate and potent. The amorous embrace of France has not turned the islanders head. He remains mature and mellow while thoroughly enjoying the smouldering warmth of the femme fatale.
Finish: Ultra sexy, a rare and wonderful experience – if this was a movie it would have to be “Casablanca”. One to be enjoyed at the close of the day with others who share the same passion for the rare things in life.
Mood: A spirit as much for the mind as for the palate.

Bruichladdich - Islay Barley 2006

Bruichladdich – Islay Barley 2006
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 50%
Summary: This is the second release in the Uber-Provenance Islay Barley Series – whisky that is very dear to our hearts.
This spirit has been distilled from barley grown by our partner farmers (and good friends) here on Islay specifically for Bruichladdich – a link with the land and terroir of this great island that had been lost, broken for many years. Now once again the salt sea spray lashed fields of Islay are producing the raw material for our distinctive island single malt – this release made from barley grown on the eastern side of the island on jubilee field at the place known as the “headland of the gallows”, on Dunlossit farm.
Character: The texture of the spirit is remarkably smooth for such a youngster. The mouth feel is quite irresistible; it’s fresh and zesty with the quality of the Islay-grown barley unrestrained by the presence of a long relationship with the oak. Now we can experience just how beautiful a spirit can be when distilled ultra-slowly by people who understand that their skills and patience are critical to the final outcome. This is “Walking on Sunshine”, summer in a glass. It has Islay charm with the most seductive texture I have ever experienced. Is this down to the Islay barley? I truly believe it is.
Colour: Brilliant, luminous lemon with a harvest gold hue.
Nose: When you first inhale the bouquet it’s like the “The Hills are Alive”, with aromas of yellow flowers in bloom on forest river-banks and heather-covered moorlands, barley fields shimmering yellow and gold, orchards filled with ripe fruits, all embraced by the warm, westerly ocean breeze. This is the beauty of young Bruichladdich spirit; you can reach into its soul and transport yourself to this amazing Island simply by closing your eyes and inhaling. It’s a remarkable harmonious bouquet.
Palate: The olfactory concentration continues onto the palate. On tasting, you will discover that squeeze of lemon, honey, pear and green apple, little hints of tangerine, chocolate, light notes of marzipan, cinnamon and sweet, oaky, vanilla. The harmonious freshness of barley and wild flowers rising on that irresistible marine presence unique to the Islands of Scotland. The taste buds rejoice in the warmth of the spirit and sweetness of the malt; it’s a taste they seldom experience in such generous measures. A miracle on the palate for sure. Islay malt whisky made from Islay grown barley is something that very few people have ever experienced. Now you can understand what’s been missing in your life and never have to wonder again, for you have touched the void!
Finish: The finish is outstanding. How can you say goodbye to a kid that’s stolen your heart with his beauty and honesty. It’s difficult, but it’s not goodbye, because as you enjoy the final drops, John Logan, the farmer at Dunlossit, is about to start ploughing for this year’s harvest – Dream Fulfilled!
Mood: Easy, like Sunday morning.

Bruichladdich - Port Charlotte 10

Bruichladdich – Port Charlotte 10
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age: 10 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Now this spirit has reached its first landmark age – ten years. Ten slow years maturing in our Islay warehouses, soaking up the “ozone”-rich marine air that blows in off the Atlantic. And, significantly, this is the first time that we have had the luxury of being able to offer an age-statement port charlotte as part our core portfolio, rather than just a limited edition. This 10-year-old is now here to stay – the classic, elegance and finesse of Bruichladdich seamlessly married with the power and presence of heavy peat, left to mature slowly and un-hurried for 10 islay years. Very special.
Character: Medium weight with a texture that is smooth, strong and smokey. This is a spirit with fire in its soul and warmth in its heart.
Colour: Bronzed mahogany.
Nose: The sherry and peat are the first to rise; they warm and seduce the senses into an Islay frame of mind with little slipstreams of lemon peel, black pepper, eucalyptus, cinnamon, heather and mint – all being caressed and cooled by the Atlantic coastal notes which merge beautifully with the earthy flora and fauna aromatics of the peat moors, heaths and woodlands of this special place.
Palate: Slowly the combination of both bourbon and sherry wood arrives in an unhurried wave of sticky dates, mellow Oloroso, chocolate orange, smoked malt, roasted walnuts and dark toffee. At this point the palate surrenders to seduction by the most handsome spirit it has ever encountered.
Finish: As you near your journey’s end, you will notice there is a subtle change in the flavour as the American bourbon wood sunsets the experience with a brilliant flash of Spanish flair – dark, passionate, sweet and desirable.
Mood: Meandering winter walk.

Bruichladdich - Cuvee 382: La Berenice

Bruichladdich – Cuvee 382: La Berenice
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: This American-oak-aged Bruichladdich has been further matured in casks that previously contained the lush sweet white wines of two of the greatest chateaux of Barsac and Sauternes.
Casks that have held wine from grapes grown to honeyed intensity from some of the most blessed plots of Bordeaux, now meet classic Bruichladdich spirit that has slumbered in our dank, dark loch-side warehouses for two decades.
Character: A sensuous, decadent and flirtatious whisky with more than a hint of forbidden fruit.
Colour: Brilliant copper/ hazelnut/ wild honeycomb/ antique gold.
Nose: The first aromatics to rise are of soft ripe green fruits – papaya, plump green grapes, melon and pear with a drift on anise and cinnamon together with that distinctive note of mint imperials. This is followed by honeysuckle and orange blossom bringing that floral connection which is a Bruichladdich vintage keynote. Sweet and nutty flavours evolve; notes of candied almonds and nougat.
Palate: On the palate it is splendidly decadent and it’s here that the sweet biscuit flavours of barley shine in total harmony with creamy toffee, allowing the toasted oaks to work their magic. The mid-palate is opulent, caressing & enthralling the taste buds. The viscosity of the world’s greatest Sauternes is an enchantress that drives you to distraction. This is class in a glass, elegant, sophisticated, full bodied and succulently sweet. The texture is silky smooth, warm and mellow with the sauternes casks highlighting the natural beauty of an unpeated Islay single malt whisky.
Finish: It’s long and never falters; the flavours don’t fade at all due to its incredible texture. What a unique experience it’s been.
Mood: Decadent and flirtatious.

Ancnoc - 35 Year Old Single Malt

Ancnoc – 35 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 35 Year Old   Strength: 44.3%
Summary: anCnoc single malt is refreshingly light and modern, even though its made using traditional methods. Their 12 and 16 Year Old bottlings have a clean, fresh character.
However, this is the more mature 35 Years Old, their oldest offering yet. As youd expect, it shows a richer, more complex personality. However the resemblance to the younger expressions is unmistakable. anCnoc 35 Years Old is bottled in its most natural state; cask strength, non-chill filtered and natural colour & is limited to only 1,495 bottles worldwide.
Nose: Initial aromas of sweet wood, sticky toffee pudding and baked apples are followed quickly by ripe sultanas and honey. Fragrant orange oil and cinnamon gum come to the fore next with a hint of peppermint lingering in the background. A drop of water brings out honeysuckle, gooseberry and chocolate-covered papaya. Great complexity.
Colour: A rich, inviting amber.
Taste: It sure has some body to it! Spicy entry with cinnamon and white pepper. Rich Christmas cake and walnuts are followed by bitter orange chocolate, that really rich 70% cocoa stuff. Look for vanilla ice-cream and a zing of lime at the back. A palate and a half. The finish is intense and fizzy with flavours of spicy dried fruit, cocoa, citrus and nuts. Really long and very elegant.
