Amrut Two Continents 2nd Edition Country: Indian Region: Indian Age: Strength: Summary: Amrut has returned to one of its early successes, this is batch 2 of the highly popular Amrut Two Continents Matured in refill bourbon barrels and bottled at a higher strenth 50% this time around. Limited release of 1,260 numbered bottles. Amrut (India) Amrut Distillery is situated in Bangalore in the state of Karnataka on the Mysore Plateau in central, southern India where production of malt whisky commenced using four stills during the early 1980s. Unpeated malted barley is sourced from the Punjab and Rajasthan regions in northern India whilst peated malted barley is shipped in from Scotland. Amrut Indian single malt whisky is matured in oak casks in Bangalore at an altitude of over 900m above sea level where maturation is subject to a tropical climate with dry seasons and rainy seasons. Due to the high rate of evaporation of at least 12% per year it is difficult to store and age casks of Amrut malt whisky locally, therefore, in order to produce older whiskies some casks of Amrut whisky are also matured in Scotland. The Amrut Distillery produces a range of Indian malts whiskies including peated and unpeated, some matured in bourbon and sherry casks including Amrut Intermediate Sherry, and some containing malt whisky which has matured in two continents. Tasting notes provied by Lawrence Graham, WhiskyIntelligence.com & Malt Maniac Bananas, cough syrup on the nose along with a good earthiness with the addition of some buttery richness, buttered raisin buns and grapefruit rinds. Over ripe fruit and aged musical instruments also pop into the picture. Malt and bees wax. Time for some water; things have settled down with a little more on the sweet side revealing itself, all very good. The undiluted taste is much gentler but still gives them a run for their money. Some good solid vibrancy here and then some malt and fruit but still very peppery. With water it slows down and the sweetness is revealed, syrupy and very good. There’s also now some hints of heather or roses; just a tinge of some floral notes adds to the whole picture. The addition of water is very welcome; don’t be afraid to add a good splash. The finish is very BIG and very long, again lots of fruit, pepper, oak spice, MALT (almost like a sweet meal biscuit) and some good hard candies. Another excellent example from Amrut. Score: 88 points. |

Palate: it’s absolutely outrageous, the coming together of flavours so far removed from each other you would think it would be a disaster but once again we stand in awe of imagination and the courage to take the consumer on this incredible journey of discovery. the kaleidoscope of aromatics transcends beautifully onto the palate which is going crazy with excitement. the smoke is the perfect foil for the sauterne; this is bruichladdich at its best, walking on the wild side, bringing pleasure and excitement to those who have that sense of adventure and passion that comes only from people who are totally committed to tradition, nyet fearless in their search for the ultimate dram. Finish: this love affair should never have happened but it has and we are witness to its enchantment, passion and joyfulness as the flavours linger long into the night, ending on a drift of peat smoke and the marine magic that is truly islay. |
