RICHARD HAWLEY HITS THE PERFECT NOTE

– MOJO AWARD WINNER RELEASES FIRST OF THREE EXCLUSIVE NEW TRACKS –

After visiting the Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, earlier this year Richard Hawley, British musical icon and MOJO award winner, has created some stunning new music inspired by the time-honoured art of whisky-making.

Entitled “Dufftown Songs”, the collection of tracks is Richard’s musical interpretation of the pioneering processes he witnessed at the distillery.
The first of the exclusive new tracks has now gone live on www.glenfiddich.co.uk/richardhawley.

Entitled ‘In the Barrel’, the track evokes the claustrophobic feeling of whisky maturing in a barrel and features a unique collaboration of artists including harpist, Julia Thornton, David Coulter on musical saw, Shez Sheridan on guitar and Kate St. John on cor anglais and other instruments.
‘In the Barrel’ can be downloaded for a limited period on www.glenfiddich.co.uk/richardhawley, where fans can also watch exclusive, behind-the-scenes studio footage of Hawley.

Speaking of the partnership, Richard commented: “There’s a certain magic in how Glenfiddich transform water into whisky which I wanted to convey in these songs. It’s been a challenge to write songs which fit the project yet also have wide appeal – something I hope I’ve managed to achieve. I’m looking forward to releasing the other two tracks – “The River” and “Opening the Bottle” – and performing them live later in the year.”

Jamie Milne, the UK brand ambassador from Glenfiddich, comments: “This is the first time the whisky-making process has been captured in song, making the “Dufftown Songs” truly pioneering. Richard’s hard work and creative expertise echoes the pioneering spirit and determination of the people at the Glenfiddich distillery, who are dedicated to producing the best dram in the valley.”

The two remaining tracks from “Dufftown Songs” will go live in November, before Richard performs an exclusive live gig in London in December.

Richard Hawley And Glenfiddich

Glenfiddich has announced a pioneering collaboration with singer songwriter Richard Hawley, an icon of British music whose latest album ‘Trueloves Gutter’ recently won the 2010 MOJO Best Album Award.

Earlier this summer, Richard spent time at Glenfiddich’s home in Dufftown, Scotland, as he prepares to write some unique pieces of music inspired by the time-honoured art of whisky-making and a distillery little changed since 1886, when founder William Grant and his nine children rolled up their sleeves to build the distillery with their bare hands.

The tracks will be released later this year and Richard will be taking inspiration for them from the distinguished history of one of Scotland’s oldest, independent, family owned distilleries – home to some of the whisky industry’s longest standing craftsmen (some of whom have worked at Glenfiddich for more than 40 years).

Richard Hawley says: “I’m passionate about this country’s traditional, authentic history and the time spent in Scotland, learning about Glenfiddich’s pioneering approach to whisky making and talking to people who have worked there for years and years, has given me some wonderful ideas for some new songs.”

Jamie Milne, the UK brand ambassador from Glenfiddich, said: “This partnership is a true first – an innovative fusion of whisky and music – and a unique musical exploration of Glenfiddich’s history, the way our whisky is made, its taste and impact on the senses, and its cultural relevance. Richard writes beautiful lyrics; wry, human observations of amazing places and passionate people – the breath-taking scenery around Dufftown and amazing characters who work at the distillery should provide plenty of inspiration.”

The new tracks will be performed by Richard at a one-off concert later this year and released exclusively, with a limited number available to download, at www.glenfiddich.co.uk.

Glenfiddich 1978 Vintage Reserve

Glenfiddich has announced the release of the Glenfiddich 1978 Vintage Reserve, an exceptional single malt with classic Glenfiddich characteristics.
But this year’s Vintage Reserve is not only the first released under the stewardship of Glenfiddich’s recently appointed Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, but also the first Vintage Reserve selected via Twitter!

On 9th June this year, Brian Kinsman was joined online by a global panel of eight influential whisky bloggers and journalists. The group nosed and tasted four single malts and compared tasting notes via the microblogging site. Their thoughts and impressions on each sample were tweeted and followed live before the panel came to a conclusion and selected cask number 28152 as their favourite.

Cask number 28152, which has a strength of 50.7% ABV, will produce 184 70cl cask-strength bottles which will retail at a RRP of £480.

Brian Kinsman, the sixth Malt Master in Glenfiddich’s long and distinguished history, commented: “Selecting this year’s Vintage Reserve was hugely exciting for me. Not only was it my inaugural Vintage Reserve selection, but to use Twitter was truly pioneering. It was fantastic to be able to lead a panel of experts from around the world and select such a wonderful whisky.”

“For two hours, we nosed and tasted samples from four pre-selected casks, all of which were filled from the same batch on the same day – 25th September 1978. Despite being filled with identical spirit, each American oak hogshead cask imbued its contents with a distinctive personality and characteristic – producing a truly unique whisky. I’m delighted with the panel’s final decision and it’s great to see cask number 28152 released globally.”

The panel agreed that cask number 28152 has a beautifully balanced nose with the hallmark Glenfiddich single malt pear and fruity character. Summer grass, hints of orange marmalade, green bananas, herbs – thyme and bay leaf – and delicate toffee oak notes shine through.

It is velvety smooth to the taste, with rich vanilla oak flavours intriguingly punctuated with a vibrant fruitiness. The addition of a little water accentuates the fruit aspect with distinct citrus and red summer berries notes. Over time the spicy character comes through without ever dominating. Its finish is long and rich with the signature fruity distillery character leaving a lasting impression.

William Grant & Sons has been named ‘Whisky Distiller of the Year’ at the prestigious Icons of Whisky Scotland Awards. The company will now battle it out with other brands from around the world at the global heats, which take place in March 2011.

Brian Kinsman, William Grant & Sons’ Master Blender and Malt Master, said: “Being named Scottish Whisky Distiller of the Year is testament to the pride and care we take in producing the very best dram in the valley. We will wait with baited breath to see if we are crowned International Whisky Distiller of the Year in March.”

Glenfiddich 50 Year Old

Glenfiddich has announced the second release of it’s Glenfiddich 50 Year Old and as you can see from the fantastic promotional pictures below it has a bit of a James Bond feel to the release.

Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s sixth Malt Master commented: “Having gently aged in the semi-darkness of Warehouse 8 for half a decade, the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is a true reflection of our dedication to producing the ultimate single malt Scotch whisky.“

To taste, the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is initially sweet with a zesty orange marmalade and vanilla toffee, which then cascades through a wonderful series of layers: aromatic herbs, floral and soft fruits, silky oak tannin and hints of gentle smoke.
The finish is exceptionally long with a touch of dry oak and the merest trace of peat.

Brian Kinsman also added: “The nose of the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is beautifully harmonious with an uplifting, vibrant and complex aroma. It’s a real honour to be part of a single malt whisky that represents the very pinnacle of our whisky-making expertise.”

Peter Gordon, who is the current Chairman and as a fifth generation descendent of the distillery’s founder, is the great-great-grandson of William Grant, commented: “As our founder did over 120 years ago, we consistently plan ahead and lay down stocks of whisky for future generations to cherish and enjoy. Because of this pioneering approach,
Glenfiddich has more aged stock than any other distillery. The Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is the ultimate expression of this foresight and we are hugely proud of it.”

Not to be confused with the first release. There are small differences with this second release – the bottle’s wax seal, the metal plate inside the leather-bound case and the hand written certificate all feature the numbers 51-100.

Additionally the hand-blown bottles are individually numbered and presented in hand-stitched, leather-bound cases, inspired by William Grant’s personal ledgers.
Each bottle is decorated in Scottish silver, crafted by Thomas Fattorini, a sixth generation silversmith, and individually imprinted with William Grant & Sons’ own hallmark.

There are on average 28 shots in a 70cl bottle – which works out at £357 each given the £10,000 price tag attached to the bottles.

Britain’s oldest car manufacturer, AC has produced vehicles since 1901 and the marque carries enormous prestige. The hand-built AC Aceca was extremely innovative – the engine was considered to be an ‘engineering marvel’ – and only 348
Acecas were produced between 1954 and 1963. The car pictured at the Glenfiddich distillery left the factory in 1960.
