Benromach Adds To It’s Range

June 16, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromach has added three new expressions of the famous single malt whisky to its range.

Benromach is Speyside’s smallest distillery, based in the attractive Moray town of Forres, the gateway to Scotland’s famous whisky producing region.

Established in 1898, Benromach distillery changed hands many times and was virtually derelict when bought by family firm Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. Drawing on generations of whisky expertise, the company carried out a painstaking refurbishment and the distillery was officially re-opened by Prince Charles in 1998.

Benromach Wood Finish Hermitage is a subtly smoky single malt Scotch whisky with a distinctly French flavour. The malt was matured in sherry and bourbon casks, before being transferred into oak casks for 22 months that had been used to produce wine from the Hermitage Appellation d’Origine Controlee, in the northern Rhone wine region of France.

Matured in first fill bourbon barrels, Benromach Cask Strength is a mouth warming and smooth single malt with hints of spice. Containing earthy influences it also has a delicate peaty edge and is bottled at 59.9% ABV.

Benromach 30 Years Old is a smooth and creamy single malt whisky with warming festive hints of sherry and spices. Matured in sherry casks the bright gold, medium malt also has hints of peat emerging.

Benromach can be obtained from The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt.

Third Release Of Glenfiddich 50 Year Old

June 10, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Third Release Of Glenfiddich's 50 Year Old

The Third Release Of Glenfiddich's 50 Year Old

Glenfiddich has announced it’s third release of one of its rarest and most precious expressions of single malt whisky – the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old.

With a strictly limited supply of just 450 bottles – just fifty are released worldwide each year – the third release of the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is a significant landmark in the history of single malt whisky and an occasion celebrated by whisky connoisseurs around the world.

The 50 bottles will now travel to some of the world’s most prestigious airports, retailers and high-end establishments, where they will retail for £10,000 per bottle.

Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s Malt Master commented: “Having gently aged in the semi-darkness of Warehouse 8 for half a decade, the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is a true reflection of our dedication to producing the ultimate single malt Scotch whisky and represents the very pinnacle of our whisky-making expertise.”

The nose of the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is beautifully harmonious with an uplifting, vibrant and complex aroma. The taste is initially sweet with a zesty orange marmalade and vanilla toffee, which then cascades through a wonderful series of layers: aromatic herbs, floral and soft fruits, silky oak tannin and hints of gentle smoke. The finish is exceptionally long with a touch of dry oak and the merest trace of peat.

Peter Gordon, current Chairman and fifth-generation descendent of the distillery’s founder, William Grant, commented: “As our founder did over 120 years ago, we plan ahead, laying down stocks of whisky for future generations to cherish and enjoy. Because of this pioneering approach, Glenfiddich has more aged stock than any other distillery. The Glenfiddich 50 Year Old is the ultimate expression of this foresight and we are hugely proud of it.”

Eagle-eyed whisky fans will spot small differences with this third release – the bottle’s wax seal, the metal plate inside the leather-bound case and the hand written certificate all feature the numbers 101 – 150.

Design cues have been painstakingly taken from archives that record the distillery’s 120-year history. The hand-blown bottles are individually numbered and presented in beautifully hand-stitched, leather-bound cases – inspired by William Grant’s personal ledgers. Each bottle is decorated in Scottish silver, crafted by Thomas Fattorini, a sixth generation silversmith, and individually imprinted with William Grant & Sons’ own hallmark.

Very nice!

But for people with a bit less to spend than £10,000 you can buy Glenfiddich Malts from The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt.

Oldest Lagavulin Comes Home

June 7, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The 1911 Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky

The 1911 Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky

One of the world’s rarest bottles of Single Malt Scotch Whisky returned home to Lagavulin Distillery at the beginning of this month.

The exceptional 130-year old unopened bottle of “Lagavulin Liqueur” contains single malt whisky that was distilled at Lagavulin Distillery on Islay on 2 June 1881. After an extraordinary 30 years in cask, the single malt was bottled on 2 June 1911 by Mackie & Co of Glasgow, then owners of Lagavulin Distillery and a firm with a long tradition of supplying Islay malts.

Georgie Crawford securing the 1911 bottle

Georgie Crawford securing the 1911 bottle

It was rare for 19th century whiskies to be offered as single malts – most found their way into blended whisky – but according to Alfred Barnard, celebrated author of The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom (published 1887), “there are only a few of the Scotch distillers that turn out spirit for use as single whiskies, and that made at Lagavulin can claim to be one of the most prominent“.

This precious bottle was acquired at auction by Diageo and forms part of the comprehensive Diageo spirits industry Archive. It was recently exhibited at the Visitors Centre at Royal Lochnagar distillery on Deeside.

But on 2 June, Donald Renwick, the distillery manager at Royal Lochnagar and former distillery manager at Lagavulin, travelled to Islay to carry the bottle back home, where it has been deposited in an ultra-secure display case in the Visitors Centre.

The handover at Lagavulin Distillery took place on the 100th anniversary of the bottling, and the 130th anniversary of its distilling, to the exact day. Donald Renwick was accompanied on his journey to Islay by two other former Lagavulin distillery managers, Peter Campbell and John Thomson, who joined him in handing the bottle into the safe-keeping of the distillery’s present manager, Georgie Crawford.

About Lagavulin Distillery

Although Lagavulin Bay may have already been a centre of whisky production in the early 17th century, it was in 1816 that John Johnston founded the first legal distillery at Lagavulin, where it remains, dominated by the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle, a 13th century base of The Lords of the Isles.
As with most Scottish distilleries, it passed through the hands of different owners, including the celebrated Sir Peter Mackie, whose company became White Horse Distillers, forever associated with Lagavulin.
White Horse joined The Distillers Company Ltd. (eventually Diageo) in 1927. In 1989, Lagavulin, now bottled at 16 years rather than the original 12, became one of the six Classic Malts of Scotland; but a limited-edition of 12 year old expression is regularly issued in the annual Special Releases series.

Glen Garioch Announces Their Latest Batch Release

Glen Garioch Announces Their Latest Batch Release

Glen Garioch Announces Their Latest Batch Release

Glen Garioch, Scotland’s most easterly distillery, has unveiled its latest small batch vintage expression, the Glen Garioch 1994.

The limited edition, only the third special addition to the Glen Garioch single malt range, was laid down just before the distillery was mothballed for two years in 1995, making this one of the last opportunities to sample old Glen Garioch’s smoky Highland essence.

With only 1000 8.4L cases available globally and just 75 in the UK, this exclusive dram is aimed fairly and squarely at discerning whisky connoisseurs and will be on shelf ahead of Father’s Day.

John Mullen, Glen Garioch brand manager, said: “Glen Garioch is an enduring spirit with more than 200 years of provenance. This vintage is one of the last to capture the old Glen Garioch smoky peat notes and has been hand-picked at the peak of its perfection.

“Our aim with all our limited edition expressions is to show the real quality of the liquid. Glen Garioch may be a small artisan distillery but it produces some of the finest single malts which stand up well against the big guns.

“With a feisty cask strength 53.9% ABV, this edition to the range holds true to the warmth and charm of our Highland heritage. It’s the epitome of Glen Garioch’s genuine, couthie spirit.”

The peated malt is old Glen Garioch at its finest, combining subtle smoke with fresh Highland floral aromas and toffee and Demerara sugar.

Patiently matured in North American Oak barrels and non chill filtered, this unique single malt is also one of the last Glen Gariochs to feature barley malted on site in their malt barns. Glen Garioch stopped using peat and their own maltings when the distillery re-opened in 1997 making this a rare vintage for single malt fans.

With its proud Doric history, the Aberdeenshire malt captures the enduring and couthie spirit of the Highlands town of Oldmeldrum.

The small batch limited edition releases incorporate the old style Glen Garioch to enhance the premium range. Vintages are only selected when it is felt they have reached the peak of their perfection.

Mullen added: “With only 75 cases available in the UK, and based on the success of our two previous small batch releases, whisky enthusiasts will need to be quick out of the blocks. Likewise anyone looking to wow their dad on June 19th.”

Glen Garioch can be bought from The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

Distillery Notes

• Glen Garioch, pronounced Glen Geery, founded in 1797 is one of the oldest remaining distilleries in Scotland
• The distillery lies on rising ground at the picturesque town of Oldmeldrum, just 17 miles north-west of Aberdeen
• Glen Garioch was relaunched in October 2010 with a core range of two single malt whiskies – the Glen Garioch 1797 Founder’s Reserve, a non chill-filtered single malt bottled at 48% ABV and the Glen Garioch 12 Year Old, non chill-filtered single malt bottled at 48% ABV after maturing in bourbon and sherry casks.

Each blogger’s remit was simple: create the best blended whisky they could using the ingredients provided. All 10 of the bloggers’ recipes were then made up into sets of 3cl samples, and Master Of Malt is now calling upon us, the public, to vote on which of the recipes will be made into the brand’s next whisky.

So if you would like to cast a vote, but haven’t yet had the chance, all you need to do is purchase a sample set containing each of the 10 bloggers’ blends. The sets are on sale for £29.95.

The closing date for voting is Sunday 26th June 2011. After this date, the votes will be counted to reveal which was the winning blend and which Blogger created it.

Master of Malt will then make up the winner into full-sized bottles, which will be available for purchase from their site.
