New Master Of Malt Bottlings

August 4, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

A Thing Of Beauty Is A Collection Of New Samples

A Thing Of Beauty Is A Collection Of New Samples

Well I’m a lucky boy and no mistake.

I’ve just received Master Of Malt’s New Bottlings samples. Thank you by the way!

They arrived less than an hour ago via a Royal Mail postie (who was in a bit of a grump but I’ll put that down to the lousy weather.)

So, what have they sent me?

Here’s the list – they are all single cask, cask strength:-

  • Cragganmore 20 Year Old (1991)
  • Dalmore 14 Year Old (1996)
  • Dailuaine 27 Year Old
  • North British 20 Year Old (1991)
  • Ron De Jeremy Rum

As you’ve obviously spotted, the Ron De Jeremy is not a malt, it is described as the adult rum! mainly because old Ron has had quite an exciting life. Google him and you’ll see!

I think I’ll have to hide that one from the other half as she is a bit (well, a lot actually!) of a Rum fan!

Obviously I haven’t tried them yet (I know, I’m a bit tardy) but I shall be reporting on them soon.

Now, where did I put that sampling glass …

Glenfiddich Selects First Ever Vatted Vintage Reserve

July 26, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glenfiddich Brand Ambassadors gather to select limited edition bottling

Glenfiddich Brand Ambassadors gather to select limited edition bottling

Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich Malt Master, today unveiled this year’s Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve, a 1974 Glenfiddich single malt Scotch whisky. The whisky is Glenfiddich’s first ever vatted Vintage Reserve and celebrates the pioneering spirit and adventurous career paths of Glenfiddich’s highly skilled Brand Ambassadors, who joined Brian as part of the selection panel.

Chairing Glenfiddich’s largest ever Vintage Reserve selection panel, Brian Kinsman was joined by 13 of Glenfiddich’s Brand Ambassadors, Glenfiddich’s Global Brand Ambassador and the owner of the world’s largest collection of Glenfiddich whisky – with participants coming from all corners of the world, including South Korea, USA, China and R.S.A.

The panel nosed and tasted three exceptional vatted vintage casks dating from 1973, 1974 and 1975, marking an adventurous change to the selection process. After careful consideration and in-depth debate, the panel selected Vatting Number 2 – a 1974 Glenfiddich.

Glenfiddich Tasting in process

Glenfiddich Tasting in process

Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich Malt Master, said: “We are always looking at ways of improving and innovating at Glenfiddich so we continue to produce the world’s favourite single malt Scotch whisky. I’m delighted to unveil our first vatted Vintage Reserve, which I carefully married prior to the selection process. After the pioneering launch of Snow Phoenix, which was created by combining single malt whiskies of different strengths, ages and finishes, it’s wonderful to be releasing another vatted whisky in the form of the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve.

“It’s also very exciting this year to have had such a knowledgeable panel of judges who are genuinely passionate about Glenfidddich; the nosing and tasting discussion was a truly fascinating experience.”

Ian Millar, Global Brand Ambassador for Glenfiddich, said; “Being a part of the Vintage Reserve selection panel has been a real career high for me. I became a Glenfiddich Brand Ambassador because of my love for fine whisky and passion for Glenfiddich. It is a real life adventure, and I am thrilled to have played a part in Glenfiddich’s pioneering history.”

Brian Kinsman commented: “This year’s Vintage Reserve selection is distinctively Glenfiddich, with rich, spicy oak notes and an amazing vibrancy for whisky of this age. The nose of the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve is rich and oaky with vibrant vanilla sweetness and an intriguing hint of polished leather and liquorice. To taste, it’s initially very sweet with a vanilla toffee character – it’s a beautiful whisky. Just 1,000 bottles will go on sale in September and I look forward to hearing what whisky lovers around the world think of this year’s limited edition bottling.”

You can buy Glenfiddich Malts from The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt.

2011 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve: nosing & tasting notes

Nose
The nose of the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve is rich and oaky with vibrant vanilla sweetness and an intriguing hint of polished leather and liquorice. With the addition of a little water there is a burst of fresh fruit and spice – orange marmalade, ripe berries, cinnamon, nutmeg and caramelised pear.

Taste
The taste of the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve is initially very sweet with a vanilla toffee character. The oak tannin develops with time giving a pleasing, oily texture and a slightly drier flavour. With water, it becomes velvety soft and mellow with beautiful layers of fruit, spice, oak and the merest hint of smoke.

Finish
The finish of the 1974 Glenfiddich Vintage Reserve is very long lasting with lingering oak.

Benromach to Share the Secret with the Arts

Gordon & MacPhail, owners of Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is sponsoring the National Theatre of Scotland’s successful production The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, in the company’s first major venture into the arts.

The new partnership has been successful in securing a Scottish Government Arts & Business New Arts Grant, designed to build private sector sponsorship of the arts, and has made it possible for Benromach to sponsor the show for its entire six week run.

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart

(Photo: Drew Farrell)

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theatre into pubs and other unlikely venues, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. It’s an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service. The show opens at Òran Mór in Glasgow on 21 July 2011 before transferring to Ghillie Dhu for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 2 – 27 August 2011.

Commenting on the sponsorship, David Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said:

“The National Theatre of Scotland is the perfect partner for Benromach. It is a pleasure to be associated with such an individual and artistic performance, which we feel reflects many of the distinctive qualities of the various expressions of our malt whisky. We look forward to the continued success of The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart and to being able to share the secret of Benromach with the audience.”

In atmospheric pubs in Glasgow and Edinburgh audiences can look forward to an afternoon of anarchic theatre, haunting folk music, wild karaoke and strange goings-on. Watching with a refreshment to hand is recommended.

The tale of Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, follows her as she sets off to attend a conference one wintery morning in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her there. Her wild journey through the night takes her into and out of different supernatural and natural realms looking for folk songs.

Elly Rothnie, Development Director, National Theatre of Scotland is delighted to welcome Benromach on board as sponsors. She said:

“2011 is a milestone year for us as we celebrate five years of being Scotland’s national theatre and the partnership with Benromach is a wonderful birthday present.
“The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart is a terrific show that showcases some of Scotland’s finest contemporary artistic talent in the unique atmosphere of traditional Scottish pubs and we know it will provide a fantastic platform for the Benromach brand.”

Those attending the performance will be invited to sample Benromach 10 Years Old, Benromach Organic or Benromach Peat Smoke at the bar after the performance and will also receive a miniature of Benromach Traditional to take away.

About Benromach
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres, the Benromach Distillery is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. From Speyside’s smallest whisky distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand-made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.

Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

Benromach expressions include:
Benromach Ten Years Old
Benromach Ten Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least ten years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

Benromach Traditional
A rich and mellow single malt with fruit and malty tones, balanced with a hint of smoke.

Benromach Peat Smoke
Full bodied, intense and challenging with a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Origins
A series of special bottlings crafted to highlight how small changes in the art of whisky-making can help to shape the character of the final single malt.

Glengoyne Partners With Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust

July 12, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glengoyne Marketing Director Iain Weir, WWT Corporate Relations Manager John Creedon and Glengoyne Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes toast the opening of Glengoyne’s new wetlands area.

Glengoyne Marketing Director Iain Weir, WWT Corporate Relations Manager John Creedon and Glengoyne Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes toast the opening of Glengoyne’s new wetlands area.

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt will become the exclusive whisky partner of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in time for the official opening of a brand new wetlands area onsite at the Distillery, which will help with processing distillery waste and make the area a haven for wildlife.

Glengoyne Distillery, which is situated just 30 minutes outside Glasgow, in the Trossachs National Park and at the start of the West Highland Way has been producing exceptional single malt whisky for nearly 200 years.

It uses only the slowest distillation process, untainted by peat smoke, to create Glengoyne with it’s motto: THE REAL TASTE OF MALT.

As part of it’s green commitment, Glengoyne Distillery has invested £170,000 on the facility which deals with the effluent from the spirit stills called Spent Lees. This reduces waste by around 25% and deals with it in an environmentally friendly manner. The wetland plants were bedded in early May to acclimatise and have now begun processing waste liquid from whisky making.

As a further commitment to wetlands, the distillery has promised a minimum contribution of £5,000 to Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust in the first twelve months of the long term partnership, to be raised through contributions from sales of special bottles of malt whisky.
Glengoyne will donate £3.00 on all personalised bottles and £4.50 on all standard bottles of the core range purchased online using a special code available to Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust members.

The agreement will also see other joint marketing and fundraising initiatives with the charity including limited edition bottlings, discount on Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust membership, on-pack promotions and joint events. The partnership kicked off in early June with a special Father’s Day promotion.

Robbie Hughes, Distillery Manager at Glengoyne said: “We are always looking at options for improving our waste management and wetlands seemed like the perfect solution. It allows us to reduce waste, cut down on waste transportation, be more environmentally friendly and will attract a huge range of wildlife to the area, which is already renowned for its geese.

“We are also investigating further environmental improvements including Anaerobic Digesters to generate gas for our boiler from another one of our effluent streams.”

Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust is a leading UK conservation organisation saving wetlands for wildlife and people across the world by creating, restoring and monitoring wetlands and the wildlife that depends on them. Wetlands are among the world’s most productive environments and support great biodiversity. They are, for example, havens for birds from storks to swans and ducks to divers.

Glengoyne Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes and Learning Manager at WWT Caerlaverock , Dumfriesshire Brian Morrell toast the opening of Glengoyne’s new wetlands area.

John Creedon, Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s Corporate Relations Manager said “New wetlands like this quickly become home to moths and beetles and even water voles, which in turn start to support and attract birds and potentially larger mammals like otters. Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust were keen to link with Glengoyne because of their commitment to the environment and because the name ‘Glengoyne’ means “Glen of the Wild Geese” in Gaelic, and Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s Caerlaverock Wetland Centre in Dumfriesshire, within easy reach of the distillery, is the winter home of tens of thousands of barnacle geese from Svalbard.”

Glengoyne can be bought from The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt
