By the midway point the sugars have moved into fully-fledged honey’s; light and brain-exploding complex; Finish: a wee bitter note from tired oak. Edencroft	Knockando – 12 Year Old Managers Choice/sherry Cask Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 12 Year Old Strength: 58.50% Summary: Nose: I think my staff have poured me the wrong stuff: they’ve opened up some pot still Demerara, right …? Wrong. No definitely from the Knockando sample. Well, well, well …let’s just say it’s a fruity, sugary, rich start on the nose …; Taste: Actually, I don’t care if this is rum or whisky. When you get flavours this beautifully defined, a body this sublimely structure …it really doesn’t much matter. Oozes fruity, beautifully natural sweetened quality and complexity; Finish: A slight bitterness on the finish where, for the first time, there is a minor blemish, but the array of sugars still make for something memorable …and absolutely 100% nothing like I have tasted from any previous Knockando …; Balance: I have been in the Demerara region Guyana, crawled around a rum warehouse at a rum distillery and opened a cask of rum which has less rum characteristics than this rumbustuous chappie. The casks previously held heavily peated malt which gives this Vintage a slight smoky character. Appearance: Polished amber. Aroma: Subtle, warm wood smoke envelopes the sweetness of peardrops & crunchy green apples. Fragrant floral notes, fresh lemon zest & honey are followed by a spicy & fruity touch of ex-sherry casks. Edencroft	Evan Williams – 23 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon Country: American Region: American Age: 23 Year Old Strength: 53.50% Summary: The Evan Williams Single Barrel is produced to honour Evan Williams who is, widely known as Kentucky’s first distiller. Born a Welshman, settled in Virginia and in 1780 moved to what became Kentucky, he grew crops, and he soon learnt that converting his corn and other grains to whiskey made them easily transportable and prevented the excess grain from rotting. Williams set up his small distillery on the Ohio River at the foot of what is now Fifth Street in Louisville. According to an article in the Louisville Courier-Journal of 29 April 1889, “Williams was a member of the early Board of Trustees of Louisville, …he never attended a meeting without bringing a bottle of his whiskey, and that was always drank.” He was censured every time for doing so, but he never left with a full jug ! He died in October of 1810. Delicate aroma, with hints of spice, vanilla and some malty dried fruits. Initially slightly sweet, moving on with a touch of spice, citrus and apple and an edge of grain. Well-balanced and tight with some punch and an edge of rye appearing. Delicate touches of cocoa, more spice and a little butterscotch sweetness. Edencroft	24 Year Old Invergordon – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Lowland Age: Strength: 46% Summary: Invergordon distillery is located on the shores of the Cromarty firth in the north-east Highlands of Scotland. Founded in 1959, it is the only grain distillery in the Highlands and for a few years also had the Ben Wyvis malt distillery on the site but this closed in 1975. The nose gives toasted oak, apple and melon skins with an uplifting menthol note. There is some honeyed depth and cinnamon spice. Edencroft	Ardbeg – 10 Year Old Single Malt Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: 10 Year Old Strength: 46% Summary: Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt to produce a whisky of perfect balance. Typically most whiskies are chill-filtered and reduced to a strength of 40% ABV. Ardbeg Ten Years Old, however, is non chill-filtered and has a strength of 46% ABV, thus retaining maximum flavour, at the same time giving more body and added depth. It’s whisky with none of the goodness taken out! Colour: Light gold. Aroma: A burst of intense smoky fruit escapes into the atmosphere – peat infused with zesty lemon and lime, wrapped in waxy dark chocolate. Bold menthol and black pepper slice through the sweet smoke followed by tarry ropes and graphite. As you dip your nose in further, savour the aroma of smoked fish and crispy bacon alongside green bell peppers, baked pineapple and pear juice. Add water and breathe in the vortex of aromas rising from the glass. An oceanic minerality brings a breath of cool, briny seaspray on chalky cliffs. Waxed lemon and lime follows with coal tar soap, beeswax and herby pine woodlands. Toasted vanilla and sizzling cinnamon simmer in the background with warm hazelnut and almond toffee. Taste: An explosion of crackling peat sets off millions of flavour explosions on the tongue: peat effervesces with tangy lemon and lime juice, black pepper pops with sizzling cinnamon-spiced toffee. Edencroft	20 Year Old Glen Moray – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 20 Year Old Strength: 57.3% Summary: Nose: a lovely intertwining of polished oaky floors and muscavado-polished barley; Taste: deliveries on the palate rarely come more delicious than this: Glen Moray, when on form, is in the true malty elite of Scotland and here it tops the Premier League. The blend of sugars, some honeyed, spices and cocoa make you groan with pleasure; Finish: the vanilla and butterscotch kick in as you suspect they might. But the barley remains steadfast and clean; Balance: I have long regarded Berry’s whisky buyer Dougie McIvor one of the genuinely understated gems of the industry and the best whisky writer we never had. Here he demonstrates his understanding of clean, barley-rich malts which has made this year’s crop of Berry’s Own Selection arguably their best yet. And according to one independent expert, he has got the copy exactly right. Renowned whisky writer Dave Broom is the only other person in the world to taste both the original whisky and Whyte & Mackay’s new liquid. This spirit has been distilled from barley grown by our partner farmers (and good friends) here on Islay specifically for Bruichladdich – a link with the land and terroir of this great island that had been lost, broken for many years. Now once again the salt sea spray lashed fields of Islay are producing the raw material for our distinctive island single malt – this release made from barley grown on the eastern side of the island on jubilee field at the place known as the “headland of the gallows”, on Dunlossit farm. Edencroft	Ancnoc – 35 Year Old Single Malt Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 35 Year Old Strength: 44.3% Summary: anCnoc single malt is refreshingly light and modern, even though its made using traditional methods. Their 12 and 16 Year Old bottlings have a clean, fresh character. However, this is the more mature 35 Years Old, their oldest offering yet. As youd expect, it shows a richer, more complex personality. However the resemblance to the younger expressions is unmistakable. anCnoc 35 Years Old is bottled in its most natural state; cask strength, non-chill filtered and natural colour & is limited to only 1,495 bottles worldwide. Nose: Initial aromas of sweet wood, sticky toffee pudding and baked apples are followed quickly by ripe sultanas and honey.
