Priceless Bottle Of Malt Mill Unveiled At Lagavulin Distillery

June 27, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Donnie MacKinnon former head brewer at Lagavulin unveils the last remaining bottle of Malt Mill that he filled fifty years ago

Donnie MacKinnon former head brewer at Lagavulin unveils the last remaining bottle of Malt Mill that he filled fifty years ago

The world’s only known bottle of Malt Mill new-make spirit was unveiled for enthusiasts and whisky pilgrims at the Lagavulin distillery last Monday.
Thought to have disappeared forever, Malt Mill is the basis of the plot for the award-winning Ken Loach film, The Angels’ Share.

Charles Maclean, one of the world’s leading whisky writers, who also played a role in the film, comments on the unveiling. “This bottle is priceless. Malt Mill is legendary, and is viewed by many as the holy grail. It is an extremely significant moment and I’m delighted to be part of it.”

Dr Nick Morgan, head of whisky outreach, Diageo, adds, “In my twenty years as an historian and archivist, I’ve always wanted to see this unique bottle of Malt Mill go on display. We are thrilled to share this precious artefact with the many whisky enthusiasts who visit Lagavulin every year.”

Rebecca O’ Brien, Producer for The Angels’ Share, says, “It is wonderful to think this bottle has been passed down from distillery manager to distillery manager for fifty years here on Islay. Our film hinges on the auction of an imaginary cask of Malt Mill precisely because everyone agreed it was so rare. Now the very DNA of Malt Mill has been rediscovered.”

l-r Paul Brannigan William Ruane Gary Maitland The Angels' Share cast unveil a priceless bottle of Malt Mill

The Angels’ Share, which is currently on general cinema release, was written by Scot Paul Laverty and was filmed in various locations around Scotland last summer. The film was a hit at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where it won the coveted Jury Prize.

The film is based on an auction of an imaginary last cask of Malt Mill and involves some whisky related shennanigans. The previously unknown bottle of Malt Mill was brought out from its secret location when the Lagavulin distillery manager, Georgie Crawford, heard about the film.
It had been passed on to her by her predecessor, the former Lagavulin distillery manager.

Malt Mill was produced at a small distillery on the Lagavulin distillery site from 1908; production ceased in 1962 and this bottle is from the last fill in June 1962.

Longrow (springbank) 18 Year Old

Longrow (springbank) 18 Year Old
Country: Scotland   Region: Campbeltown
Age: 18 Year Old   Strength:
Summary: Longrow 18 year old 2012 release is a peated Campbeltown single malt Scotch whisky matured in sherry casks. Stocks are very limited for this highly anticipated release. Longrow (Springbank) Springbank Distillery is the oldest, independent and family owned malt whisky distillery in Scotland having been founded in 1828 in Campbeltown at the foot of the Mull of Kintyre on the west coast of Scotland. Springbank produces three different types of malt whisky one of which is Longrow which was first produced in 1973 and is highly peated and double distilled. The barley is spread  across Springbank’s own traditional malting floors where it germinates and is then dried on the perforated floor of the kiln by hot  peat smoke for 48 hours. The name is in memory of  Longrow Distillery which sat adjacent to Springbank Distillery and is now one of Campbeltown’s  many lost distilleries. Longrow Distillery operated from 1824 until 1896. Nose: This whisky has an incredibly sweet nose with some savoury notes peeking through. Marshmallows in abundance – the vanilla variety, with icing sugar and foam bananas adding to the sweetness. Upon further nosing the fruit makes an appearance, brambles, mandarines and over ripe damson fruits. Some savoury notes pushing through such as linseed oil – do we smell cricket bats? Palate: This dram coats your palate in a waxy fashion with its continuing sweet flavours as described on the nose. But there is also the familiar, well balanced trace of smoke which makes this a brilliantly complex wee dram that will make you feel right at home no matter where you are. Finish: The creaminess of this whisky means it doesn't go away – you feel the warmth of this Longrow all the way down to your boots, creamy, sweet with a gentle smoke finish.

Summary: Kilkerran Work in Progress 4 is a Campbeltown single malt Scotch whisky distilled at the Glengyle Distillery. This 2012 release is the 4th bottling of the series from the new distillery and limited to 9,000 bottles. Glengyle William Mitchell established Glengyle Distillery in 1872 in Campbeltown at the foot of the Kintyre Peninsular. Closed in 1925, malt whisky stock sold and all the equipment removed. The buildings were purchased by Hedley Wright in 2000 who re-furbished and re-opened Glengyle Distillery in 2004. Now equipped with two small stills and operating for one or two months per year to produce Glengyle single malt whisky which is called Kilkeran. Nose: Home made marmalade. Incredibly rich with copious amounts of oranges, rhubarb and ripe pear amongst the sweetness of brown sugar and honey. Palate: The tangy and zesty nose continues on to the palate and is enriched with flavours of toffee, fudge and cream buns stuffed with vanilla custard and coated with icing sugar. Finger licking good. Finish: Sweet and spicy, with hints of aniseed and liquorice.

Springbank produces three different types of malt whisky including Hazelburn which is non-peated and triple distilled and was first produced in 1997 and first released at the age of 8 years in 2005. The barley is spread across traditional malting floors at Springbank where it germinates and is then dried by hot air on the perforated floor of the malt kiln. The name Hazelburn is in memory of  Hazelburn Distillery which was once one of the largest and now one of Campbeltown’s many lost distilleries and operated in the centre of the town from 1825 until 1925. Nose: Passion Fruit, malt, orange peel. As the nose opens up the sweetness and malt notes really come to the front. Sweet vanilla also comes through as the whisky breathes. Palate: The texture and body of this whisky is quite surprising. Subtly spicy notes hint at some sherry casks in the mix, however the velvet vanilla flavours are an indication that most of the Hazelburn CV has been matured in fresh bourbon casks. Finish: Lingering and mellow with sweet salty

But Caperdonich Distillery opened just as whisky sales crashed and subsequent wars and prohibition inhibited its recovery. And having closed in 1902 it remained mothballed until 1965 when the stills were fired up once again. It closed once more in 2002, and now that we have finally come to appreciate the complexity and depth of Caperdonich malt whisky …… demolished in 2011. Glengoyne & Olly Smith – An ‘Ideal’ Combination!

Glengoyne Distillery, Strathblane, Scotland. TV presenter, wine expert and newspaper columnist Olly Smith today visited the distillery for a one to one coaching session from distillery manager Robbie Hughes. Also present was Danielle Murphy from Ian MacLeod Distillers.

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Whisky teamed up with Olly Smith, one of the TV’s most popular and charismatic drinks experts, at the Ideal Home Show Scotland 2012 in Glasgow earlier this month. They hosted a number of special tasting sessions across Glengoyne’s award-winning whisky range.

The event took place in the Celebrity Chef Theatre, offering whisky aficionados and novices an entertaining Masterclass on the Glengoyne range and to learn something new about Scotland’s national spirit.

Olly Smith

Olly Smith

Olly also visited the Glengoyne Distillery to experience the home of the leading malt whisky for himself, meeting Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes and to get a taste for Glengoyne at its source. Glengoyne is one of Scotland’s most accessible distilleries, located just 30 minutes north of Glasgow in a beautiful wooded glen overlooking the breath-taking West Highland Way.

The mouth-watering journey started with the delicate sweet nose of fresh apples from the Glengoyne 10 Years Old, before the enjoying the more bourbon influences of Glengoyne 12 Years Old.
A Single Malt which can’t help improving with age, the nutty, spicy flavours of the Glengoyne 17 Years Old were the perfect predecessor to the riot of toffee, spice and sherry that the Glengoyne 21 Years Old is famous for.

Olly said: “The Glengoyne range has a vibrant fruity character across the board with delightful purity in every sip, whether it’s light and refreshing or deep and rich. The casks impart complexity and depth as the whiskies gently develop with age.

“I loved visiting the intimate Glengoyne Distillery and it was a great opportunity to share these brilliant drinks with visitors at The Ideal Home Show Scotland too.”

Olly hosts a variety of live events around the UK including the BBC Good Food Show, Tapas Fantasticas, and previously Masterchef Live, Love Cooking, Taste of London and the F-Word Live for Channel 4.
Olly is also a Wine Editor for The Mail on Sunday’s Live Magazine, writes weekly for Waitrose Weekend, monthly for Waitrose Kitchen, as well as features for numerous other publications.

About Benromach
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres, the Benromach Distillery is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. From Speyside’s smallest whisky distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand-made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.

Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

Benromach expressions include:
Benromach Ten Years Old
Benromach Ten Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least ten years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

Benromach Traditional
A rich and mellow single malt with fruit and malty tones, balanced with a hint of smoke.

Benromach Peat Smoke
Full bodied, intense and challenging with a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Origins
A series of special bottlings crafted to highlight how small changes in the art of whisky-making can help to shape the character of the final single malt.
