Ballantine’s New 40 Year Old & It’s 30 Year Old Celebrates The Scottish Open

July 17, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ballantine's 40 Year Old

Ballantine's 40 Year Old

Ballantine’s has launched a 40 Year Old edition of it’s Ballantine Blended Whisky. Not surprisingly, it is one of the most exclusive blended Scotch whisky ever created.

Ballantine’s 40 Year Old has been created to fulfil founder George Ballantine’s aspiration to produce the most exceptional and exquisite whisky “only when the time is right.”
Using small amounts of a rare inventory of aged whiskies, Master Blender Sandy Hyslop has blended together, by hand, a unique luxury Scotch in the famous Ballantine’s style.

Only 100 bottles of this extremely rare whisky will be released globally each year. Individually numbered bottles will be priced at around £4,500.

Ballantine’s Master Blender Sandy Hyslop comments: “This 40 Year Old blend is something I believe George Ballantine would be proud to put his name to. It has been an honour to realise his aspiration and to contribute towards this significant moment in the history of Ballantine’s Scotch whisky”.

Presented in a wooden cabinet, the Ballantine’s 40 Year Old bottle features an etching of the Ballantine’s crest alongside Sandy Hyslop’s signature. World-renowned British silversmith Richard Fox has expertly crafted five sterling silver elements to complete the elegant presentation – the stopper, collar, seal, label and base cup, which are each individually hallmarked by the London Assay office, the mark of silver quality for more than 700 years.

Ballantine’s 40 Year Old is a 43% ABV blended Scotch with notes of pears in syrup, rich fruitcake, cinnamon and root ginger on the nose. The liquid has a complex and fruity character and a round, smooth and perfectly balanced body that imparts flavours of toffee and sweet red apple. The finale, Ballantine’s 40 Year Old’s extraordinary finish, is significant and long lasting.

Ballantine’s 40 Year Old Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep and intense
Nose: Rich; Bursting with flavours of ripe pears in syrup, intermingled with rich fruitcake; A hint of cinnamon and root ginger in the background
Taste: Incredible depth; Exceptional multi-layered flavours of rich toffee and sweet soft red apple
Finish: Delightful finish that last an incredibly long, blissful time.

Scottish Open 2012

In other news, Ballantine’s has celebrated its sixth successful year as an Official Sponsor of the Scottish Open at the weekend, as India’s Jeev Milkha Singh was named the overall winner of the tournament.

Singh clinched the title in the closely-fought final round yesterday after he birdied the first extra hole in a play-off against Italy’s Francesco Molinari.
He was rewarded for his outstanding performance with a coveted bottle of Ballantine’s 30 Year Old in the tournament’s landmark 30th year.

The Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Peat Project

July 17, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Port Charlotte Peat Project

The Port Charlotte Peat Project

It’s times like these you really wish for a Time Machine.

Because, surprisingly, No one knows what the original Bruichladdich of 1881 actually tasted like!
There are neither bottles in existence nor tasting notes. What would it have
tasted like?
So, The Port Charlotte Peat Project sets out to answer this conundrum.
This single malt whisky, distilled from heavily peated barley at Bruichladdich
Distillery, is called Port Charlotte to differentiate it from the traditional, unpeated
Bruichladdich.
The Peat Project is distilled from barley peated to 40ppm, and matured in
American Oak, in warehouses at the nearby village of Port Charlotte.
It is a multivintage, assembled from several different vintages and harvest
characteristics, for intriguing complexity.
The Peat Project replaces the previous releases of 3D, PEAT and An Turas
Mor
bottlings.

Tasting Notes
CHARACTER
A CLEVERLY COMPLEX, PEATY SPIRIT WITH STRONG INDIVIDUALITY OF CHARACTER, AND ABSOLUTE INTEGRITY.

NOSE
A PEAT SMOKINESS WITH VANILLA SWEETNESS. FOLLOWED BY SPICY BLACK PEPPER & LEMON SPICINESS, THEN LITTLE WAVELETS OF SALTINESS.
WAITING PATIENTLY TO EMERGE ARE NUTMEG, CINNAMON, WILD MINT AND THE MALTY SWEETNESS OF SPRING BARLEY.

PALATE
BRILLIANT CREAMINESS. THE TEXTURE, LAYER UPON LAYER, IMPARTS AN EVENNESS OF FLAVOURS ACROSS THE PALATE AND COOLS THE PEAT FIRE WARMTH.
A BEAUTIFUL WALTZ OF AROMAS, SCENTS, FLAVOURS AND FEELINGS MOVE ACROSS THE PALATE.

FINISH
AN EXTRAORDINARY MIX OF VANILLA SWEETNESS AND PEAT SMOKE WITH A SPLASH OF GREEN FRUIT SYRUP AND IT LINGERS LONG & MELLOW GIVING TOTAL SATISFACTION.
A CAPTIVATING & UPLIFTING EXPERIENCE TO ENJOY THE ART OF TRADITIONAL HANDCRAFTED DISTILLATION.

Bruichladdich History
In the mid nineteenth century, 4000 acres of malting barley were grown on the island of Islay, but due to The Great War and its Islay casualties, the yield
collapsed to zero.
The programme by Bruichladdich to re-establish the cereal on the island now means 800-1000 tons, a quarter of the Victorian era yield, is now harvested for Bruichladdich.

Benromach Gets Creative!

July 10, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Urquhart family toast Keith's illustration

Benromach has just got all creative!

With the help of Scottish illustrator, Jill Calder, two distillery workers have been penned by Jill to feature at the heart of Benromach’s new design concept set to showcase the secret of Benromach, Speyside’s smallest distillery, to the UK and the world!

Benromach is handmade by just two stillmen – Keith Cruickshank and Mike Ross – who make in one year what other distillers make in a week!

This makes Benromach one of Scotland’s best kept whisky secrets. Now Keith and Mike have now been immortalised in Fife-based artist Jill Calder’s illustrations, reflecting the personal qualities the two men bring to Benromach and its expressions.
The illustrations will be used in the distillery’s advertising, marketing and promotional campaigns.

David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, the family-run Elgin company which owns Benromach commented: “Benromach is a handmade, boutique whisky which is lovingly crafted by Keith and Mike. They are the essence of Benromach and so we thought it appropriate that they were placed front and centre of our new concept.”

“Jill’s illustrations are a perfect fit for Benromach – home and handmade and with loving attention to detail.”

Douglas Alexander of Stuff Creative got the job of overseeing Benromach’s new personality. He said, “Anyone who visits Benromach can meet Keith and Mike, but now those who can’t make the trip to Forres personally can ‘meet’ both of them in Benromach displays across the country.”

Illustrator Jill Calder (www.jillcalder.com) is an award-winning illustrator based in Cellardyke, Fife. Trained at Glasgow School of Art, her clients include the New Yorker, Elle magazine, the British Museum, Sainsburys and Harvard Business review.
She said: “Illustrating Benromach distillery and its two stillmen, Keith and Mike, was a lovely process. I’ve never been a whisky drinker but they’ve done their best to try and convert me!”

Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series – New Release

July 10, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Bruichladdich's Latest Release Of The Islay Barley Series

Bruichladdich's Latest Release Of The Islay Barley Series

The latest edition of Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series, this one from Dunlossit Farm, has been released.

The Islay Barley Series is the ultimate expression of Islay, a single malt whose provenance and traceability is as unparalleled as the origin is unique.
Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series showcases the first single malt whiskies in a century to be exclusively Islay made.
Be it from barley to barrel to bottle.

Bruichladdich feels that because of increasing production efficiency and global market raw material sourcing, the real sense of place, the terroir from which Scotch whisky originated, has been lost.

So, Bruichladich have set out to rectify this with a single malt that was made from barley sown and grown on the Isle of Islay.

The unpeated barley has been distilled in to Bruichladdich whisky, warehoused and matured and finally bottled still on the Hebridean island at Bruichladdich Distillery.

The terroir for this whisky is a desolate place known as the ‘headland of the gallows’. This lonely field is a rare patch of fertility amongst the barren, rocky outcrops and peat bogs tilled continually since Neolithic times.
(Interestingly, evidence of Islay’s earliest farmers, dated to 6,000 years ago, was discovered in this soil only last year.)

Chalice barley was grown by farmer Jim Logan in what is now called the Jubilee field (Queen Victoria’s, not Elizabeth’s), on Dunlossit land owned by Bruno Schroder, a Bruichladdich shareholder.
It was harvested in September 2006 and distilled eight weeks later.

Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series is the ultimate in whisky terroir – where once again land and dram are united.

Non chill-filltered, and colouring-free, Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series “Dunlossit” is bottled at 50% ABV.
