Summary: Bruichladdich Black Art 3 is a 22 year old Islay single malt Scotch whisky. This 3rd release of the series distilled in 1989 has matured in American oak before a second period of maturation in premium wine casks. Bruichladdich Bruichladdich Distillery was established in 1881 on the Rhinns peninsular on the island of Islay close by the sandy bays of Loch Indaal. Re-opened in 2001 with much of the original Victorian equipment restored to working order. The first release of Bruichladdich’s new whisky was the highly acclaimed PC5, the first release in the limited Port Charlotte range. The Bruichladdich distillery visitor centre offers distillery tours including the bottling hall and the distillery participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Whisky Festival. Nose: The voyage of olfactory discovery starts with vanilla pods & chocolate raisins. hints of warm, christmas pudding and a splash of mulberry wine follow, all encased in a date syrup and walnut cradle. Add a dash of water and the direction changes; now we are joined by plump, ripe blueberries with a nuance of damson jam. Little hints of cinnamon and aniseed join the harmonious throng as they enter into the valley of oaks, where the mellow, sweet, vanilla notes have waited patiently to impart their majestic characters to the spirit; this they do in harmony with the lighter fruits, gleaned at birth from the malted barley. The pear, mango, papaya & honeydew melon is a seduction of the senses. Palate: The power of the oak encompasses the structure of the spirit, ensuring that all the characters can be experienced; their journey was long, and now you are there to hear their story and share in the harmony that’s to be found in the glass. It’s the black art of man-made spirit, nature’s natural resources, and the distiller’s never-ending quest to find the ultimate taste experience. At bruichladdich we are constantly making spiritual journeys, seeking new and exciting experiences for those who have been with us since we first set sail a decade ago. stay on board for our next voyage! Finish: A heart-warming finish, lasting long into the night. The flavours are like friends who listen and never disagree; who give comfort and companionship when there is no one else around; or in company, they bring out the best in all who partake of the black art.

Lifetime achievement award for Gordon & MacPhail’s David Urquhart

July 4, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Congratulations to Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, David Urquhart, who has been honoured by his industry peers with a lifetime achievement award for his services to the Scottish Licensed Trade.

David was presented with the accolade at the DRAM magazine Scottish Licensed Trade Awards 2012. Established over fifteen years ago, the awards were the first in Scotland to recognise the very best of the Scottish on-trade industry.

David is retiring this autumn, after dedicating 40 years to the work of Gordon & MacPhail, the whisky and licensed trade industry and various local community causes close to his heart, including the Elgin Bid and the Forres bid to host the European Pipe Band Championships.

Daivd Urquhart pictured with Susan Young editor of The DRAM magazine

Daivd Urquhart pictured with Susan Young editor of The DRAM magazine

He has been committed to continuing the work of his ancestors, who have been involved in Gordon & MacPhail since its first year of trading. Established in 1895 as a family run grocers, tea, wine and spirit merchants in Elgin, the company has since grown into one of the UK’s top independent wine and spirits merchants, alongside its others business interests as a bottler and exporter of whiskies from throughout Scotland and a distiller, owning Benromach Distillery in Forres.

Commenting on his award David said: “I’m honoured to receive this award, which was a huge surprise for me. It’s come at a very timely point in my career as I prepare to retire and hand over the work that I have achieved, along with my fathers and grandfathers before me, to the next generation coming through in the business.

“As a family we have grown Gordon & MacPhail to be one of the top independent wholesalers in the UK along with our growing worldwide recognition as experts in the Scotch Whisky industry. I’m proud to have been able to be part of this.

“I’m confident I’ll be leaving my role in more than capable hands, and locally I hope to keep busy with the many community initiatives Elgin and Forres are involved in.”

Susan Young, Editor of the DRAM added: “David Urquhart has spent the last 40 years serving the Scottish licensed trade, and helping to grow his family company, Gordon & MacPhail. His passion, commitment, determination, and above all, his integrity made David a very worthy recipient of the DRAM Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Benromach, the distillery owned by Gordon & MacPhail, was also sponsors of a special DRAM award – the Benromach Award for Success.

The judges in this category were looking for a business that had successfully grown and developed particularly over the last year – whether by growing their turnover or by further developing their business in other ways. Nominees were asked to share the secret of their success.

The gold medal and the title of Benromach Award for Success went to SimpsInns, followed by Omni Taverns (silver medal) and Fort Hotel (bronze medal)

Banff 36 Year Old Platinum Selection

Banff 36 Year Old Platinum Selection
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 36 Year Old   Strength:
Summary: Banff 36 Year Old Douglas Laing Old & Rare Platinum Selection. Single cask distilled 1975 and bottled 2012. Banff The Mill of Banff malt whisky distillery was established by Major James McKilligan at Mains of Colleonard Farm just south of Banff in 1824 and acquired by James Simpson a local merchant and ship owner in 1852.  Mill of Banff Distillery closed in 1863 when Simpson’s son built a new distillery on a site to the west of Banff at Inverboyndie and named it Banff Distillery. Relocation enabled the opportunity to expand and take advantage of a plentiful supply of soft Speyside water and the new branch line connecting Banff to the main Inverness to Aberdeen railway. Despite surviving the ups and downs of the whisky industry Banff Distillery closed in 1983and partially demolished in 1985 but most of the rest of Banff Distillery came down during a fire in 1991 and although shells of a few warehouses are still standing Banff is a lost Highland malt whisky distillery. Sweet barley is immediately evident on the nose – and it opens further with honey, fresh cut summer grass – running to subtle aged and toasted, smoking oak.  Palatewise there is a mouthcoating sugar tang of sweetness plus a Galliano liqueur style of spiciness with more late honey (Hot Toddy style) and coffee.  Beyond replication of those same flavours – on the finish there is a vanilla fudge quality with the soft spices carrying even more interest.

The design proved successful, was rapidly adopted by other distilleries and nowadays it is the iconic symbol of Scotland’s traditional malt whisky distilleries.
