Glenfarclas 1953 – Sampling Their Oldest Whisky!

May 16, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenfarclas 1953

The Glenfarclas 1953

It’s not every day that the Royal Mail delivers something special to my door. Well, in fact, they hardly ever as it is usually bills. But a couple of days ago a very special package was delivered courtesy of the chaps at Master Of Malt.

After ripping through the extremely efficient packaging my eyes became all gooey and misty eyed. And it wasn’t because I’d just poked myself in the eye with some of the industrial strength bubble wrap that had surrounded it.

No, it was because I held in my hand a very precious thing, a box containing a miniature of Glenfarclas 1953!

Now that’s something very special indeed. Not only is it 58 years old which is pretty special in itself but it is the oldest spirit ever to leave the Glenfarclas Distillery walls.

The cask it matured in for all those years began its life in Spain, where it was used to mature and then transport fine sherry to Scotland. It was bought by Glenfarclas and filled with whisky on 20 November 1953.

As it states in the Press Release (they’ve written it so much better than me):-
“The single cask whisky launched by Glenfarclas is the oldest spirit released so far by the distillery.
The privilege of exclusive access to the distillery’s rarest and oldest stock, the remaining 4 casks distilled in 1953, were given by George Grant, of Glenfarclas to a panel comprised of Serge Valentin, a whisky connoisseur and a key member of the internationally renowned Malt Maniacs, Ben Ellefsen, Sales Director for Master of Malt (Whisky Magazine’s ‘Global Online Retailer of the Year’ 2012), Michal Kowalski of Wealth Solutions and George Grant himself.
The panel was unanimous in their selection and cask #1674 was selected to be bottled.”

Cask #1674 yielded only 400 bottles at a cask strength of 47.2% abv and is naturally coloured and non-chill filtered. It has been produced for the Polish investment market but some are available from Master of Malt.

58 Years of WOW!

58 Years of WOW!

Amazing to think that when it was distilled the world was a very different place. Britain was just coming out of rationing, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth was held and Frankie Lane was at No.1 with “I believe”.

To put 58 years into perspective, people would have started their working life at Glenfarclas after the whisky was casked and retired before it’s bottling!

Here’s some tasting notes:-

Official Nosing by Charles MacLean What I Reckon
Nose: A mild nose feel. Very clean, fresh and highly perfumed — the scent fills the room:
hair lacquer, shampoo, face cream, almond oil (and pounded flaked almonds). I was reminded of an old fashioned barber’s shop. Beyond this, a fruity complex which includes fresh apricots and dried figs, and the gradual emergence of sweet tablet.
(@ c40%) Even a drop of water reduces the aroma. After a while some rich vanilla sponge emerges — even steamed syrup pudding, very slightly burnt. The latter develops into scorched brown paper.

Palate: Smooth and fresh; not as sweet as expected. Centre palate and quite tannic/mouth
drying, with some spice. A long, rounded, warming finish.

Finish: Warm sand and sand-dunes, with sun-tan oil.

Overall: Layer upon layer of flavour. A splendid old whisky; still lively, and not displaying any woodiness. Much influenced by the American oak cask, but wholly beneficially. Best enjoyed unreduced. Cheerful and friendly at natural strength.

Nose: I was tapping away on the laptop and was surprised at how quickly the room was filled with it’s wonderful sweet and fresh aromas.

Palate: Sweet but not sickly, currants, cake mixture. Not oily or heavy at all.

Finish: Spicy, hint of dryness and very, very warming!

Overall: As I said in a tweet “Glenfarclas 1953 – that truly is an amazing malt! I think I’m spoilt for life!” My opinion certainly hasn’t changed – it is an awesome dram. It may have been bottled at nearly pensionable age but it is still full of life and zest!

Once again, many thanks to Master Of Malt for an amazing opportunity to taste history!

Benromach’s The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart Goes To The US!

Benromach Single Malt Whisky is set to go ‘across the pond’ with the National Theatre of Scotland as it continues to sponsor an international tour of the Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart in America.

The successful partnership with the National Theatre Scotland started with its support of the production at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year. And now the production will tour Scotland, England and internationally in 2012 and 2013.

Benromach Single Malt Whisky will sponsor some US dates, with American audiences being offered the opportunity to share a dram of the Speyside Scotch Malt during the show. This sponsorship will cover all US venues where state legislation allows and is part of Benromach’s venturing into the arts and their first foray into international arts touring.

The production will be staged in taverns, breweries, and community spaces and studios with bars built in, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. It’s an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service.

The show opens at the Wicked Wolf Tavern, Festival of New Ideas, New Haven in Connecticut on 20th June before moving on to North Carolina, Chicago, Massachusetts, Ohio, Purdue, Washington DC, Michigan, Texas and California. The production will also be visiting Vancouver, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and Brazil.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Michael Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said: “We’re proud to be supporting this tour as it goes international. Scotland has many world-class artists and this individual and artistic performance deserves to be shared with the UK and people internationally. The US already enjoys one of Scotland’s other fine traditions being one of the largest export markets for Scotch whisky so we hope the audience enjoys sharing a free dram of Benromach with this great performance.”

The tale of Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, follows her as she sets off to attend a conference one wintery morning in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her there. Her wild journey through the night takes her into and out of different supernatural and natural realms looking for folk songs.

Elly Rothnie, Development Director, National Theatre of Scotland said: “The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart was a huge success at the Fringe last year and our audiences loved sampling one of Scotland’s finest malt whiskies as part of the experience. We are thrilled to continue this important partnership in 2012 where we will take the production and Benromach whisky to new audiences across the globe.”

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart originally toured Scotland in February 2011 subsequently playing at a number of top venues in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The production has won two awards, a CATS Award for Best Music and Sound and a Herald Angel.

About Benromach
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres, the Benromach Distillery is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. From Speyside’s smallest whisky distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand-made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.

Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

Benromach expressions include:
Benromach Ten Years Old
Benromach Ten Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least ten years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

Benromach Traditional

Win Rare Compass Box Whisky with Master of Malt!

April 21, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Compass Box Canto Cask 48

The Compass Box Canto Cask 48

Award-winning online spirit retailer Master of Malt is giving away three rare bottles of Compass Box whisky to one lucky customer this month.

Compass Box creates some of the finest blended whiskies available on the market today, from the superlative Spice Tree to the powerful Peat Monster.

The first 250 people to buy a bottle of Compass Box from Master of Malt’s online shop will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win three superb bottles: the exalted Canto Cask 48, the original illegal Spice Tree blend, and Canto Cask 20.

In addition to the prize draw, every bottle of Compass Box will come with a free 3cl dram of one of the company’s other whiskies to savour.

Here’s a list of eligible Compass Box products.

Every bottle bought increases the odds of winning, and remember there are only 250 chances, so there is no better time to discover the Compass Box range at Master of Malt.

The Prizes:

Canto Cask 48

The Canto Cask Range was a first for Compass Box, a fascinating experiment into the effects of oak. Compass Box took sixteen single cask, cask-strength Scotch malt whiskies. Each cask held the same whisky, but for the last 18 months the whiskies were aged in a range of different new oaks, both French and American, in a variety of different toasts. Number 48 used a heavily toasted French oak cask.

Illegal Spice Tree

When the award-winning Spice Tree was first launched back in 2005, the Scottish Whisky Association (SWA) decided the practice of using new oak staves in the finishing process was against the rules, and threatened to take Compass Box to court unless the company stopped making its popular blend. To cut a long story short, the process was modified, Spice Tree was resurrected in 2009, and there was much rejoicing. But Master of Malt has an original, illegal bottle of Spice Tree to give away… keep it under your hat.

Canto Cask 20

Number 20 is strikingly different from 48; it was finished in medium-toasted American Oak, and the effect has produced a very different whisky to the heavily toasted French oak matured 48.

Putting the Dram into Drama

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart

Benromach Single Malt Whisky is building on its successful partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland as it continues to sponsor a UK tour of the Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart 2012 tour, following its support of the production at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year.
The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theatre into pubs and other unlikely venues, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. It’s an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service.

The show opens at the Adam Smith Theatre Kirkcaldy on Wednesday 11 April before moving on to Blair Atholl, Nethy Bridge, Edinburgh, Torry, Kippen, Crianlarich, Kilcreggan, West Kilbride, Carlops and Kelso.

Their sponsorship is part of Benromach’s venture into the arts and will enable each audience member in Scotland (18 years and above) to share a dram of Benromach Whisky during the show.

Commenting on the sponsorship, David Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said: “We’re excited to be continuing our sponsorship of the arts as The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart grows in popularity across Scotland and the rest of the UK. It’s a pleasure to be associated with such an individual and artistic performance, which we feel reflects many of the distinctive qualities of the various expressions of our malt whisky.”

The production will also appear at UK festivals; including the Norwich and Norfolk Festival, Mayfest, Bristol and the Brighton Festival. The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart will then tour the UK and internationally until 2013.

Those attending the performance will be invited to sample Benromach 10 Years Old, Benromach Organic or Benromach Peat Smoke at the bar after the performance.

Elly Rothnie, Development Director, National Theatre of Scotland said: “The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart was a huge success at the Fringe last year and our audiences loved sampling one of Scotland’s finest malt whiskies as part of the experience. We are thrilled to continue this important partnership in 2012 where we will take the production and Benromach whisky to new audiences throughout the country.”

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart originally toured Scotland in February 2011 subsequently playing at Latitude Festival, Òran Mór, Glasgow, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2011.

A rich and mellow single malt with fruit and malty tones, balanced with a hint of smoke.

Benromach Peat Smoke
Full bodied, intense and challenging with a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Origins
A series of special bottlings crafted to highlight how small changes in the art of whisky-making can help to shape the character of the final single malt.
