Caol Ila Wins Best Single Malt Accolade

March 31, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Caol Ila Wins Best Single Malt Accolade

Caol Ila Wins Best Single Malt Accolade

Caol Ila Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky has taken the top Single Malt Scotch Whisky honours at The San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

After three days of judging against dozens of single malt Scotch whiskies, it was awarded the accolade of “Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky”.

This stylish, richly flavoured and complex expression of Caol Ila has – after many years maturation in oak casks – been double-matured in dark Moscatel caskwood, hand-selected to complement the whisky’s sweetly fruity, smoky intensity.

Caol Ila Distillers Edition has already won awards. It won Gold – Best in Class at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2009, Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2009 and 2010, and Gold at the Scotch Whisky Masters in 2010.

The supreme “Best” award, won this year by Caol Ila Distillers Edition, is given after an extensive multiple-round judging process running over three days.

The limited number of bottlings that qualify for a Double Gold Medal (which happens when the judging panel is unanimous in its assessment of a Gold Medal award) may, if the judges unanimously agree again, progress further to compete for honours in a wider super category.

This “super panel” of judges then re-assess the selected Double Gold winners with a view to deciding the “Best of” category awards: a process that takes the better part of the final day, nosing, tasting, evaluating and voting the best of the best in each category.

Tasting Notes for Caol Ila Distillers Edition

Each Distillers Edition expression undergoes a second (or ‘double’) maturation in casks that have previously held a fortified wine.

This extraordinarily stylish and complex expression of Caol Ila has been double-matured in carefully selected Moscatel casks. The wood is not over-evident and instead balances perfectly with this richly flavoured single malt.

STRENGTH : 43% ABV

APPEARANCE : Clear gold

NOSE : Wonderfully concentrated pure, clean Caol Ila – peaty and medicinal, with rich fruit, spicy and fragrant. With water, the fragrant smokiness comes singing through.

BODY : Medium.

PALATE : Sweetness and maltiness strike first, then are quickly overwhelmed by peat smoke and intense, clean, crisp flavours. The signature smoky bonfires are here, and build to quite a size. Overall, drying, in a beautifully balanced, complex, elegant development, complemented with cinnamon spice.

FINISH : Long, rounded, robust and multi-layered.

About Caol Ila

Caol Ila Distillery is one of Diageo’s 28 Single Malt Scotch Whisky Distilleries and is the largest distillery on the Isle of Islay. It was established in 1846 near Port Askaig on Islay by Hector Henderson, and borrows its Gaelic name from the sea sweeping past its dramatic and almost secret location, squeezed tight between the steep cliff and the sea, hard on the eastern shores of the Sound of Islay with its fast and challenging currents. It was a spot originally chosen in 1846 partly because of the fresh water which still provides its main supply, rising from limestone in nearby Loch nam Ban, then falling to the sea just behind the distillery.

About the San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Caol Ila Distillery Set for Expansion

March 29, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Caol Ila on the beautiful Sound of Islay

Caol Ila on the beautiful Sound of Islay

Islay’s famous whisky industry received a major boost with the announcement last week that Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks business, is to invest £3.5million in expanding and upgrading its Caol Ila distillery.

The distillery – which enjoys one of the most stunning locations in Scotland on the Sound of Islay and produces one of the island’s iconic Scotch brands – will see its production capacity increased by 700,000 litres per year from 5.7 million litres per annum (mla) to 6.4mla.

The extension of the distillery will see two new 62,000litre washbacks installed in addition to the eight which are already onsite. (Washbacks are the vessels in which the fermentation process takes place prior to distillation. )

It is the new washbacks that will drive the increased production capacity.

The refurbishment of the distillery will see key equipment upgraded, including the replacement of the distillery’s mash tun – a crucial piece of equipment in the distillation process – and a new control system installed in the stillhouse. Caol Ila’s six large onion-shaped copper stills, overlooking the Sound of Islay, are not part of the refurbishment project.

The investment is a major boost to local contractors who will benefit from work on the site as well as generating a knock-on financial benefit to the local economy from contractors who will have to be brought on to the island to carry out aspects of the work. The Caol Ila project builds on £3million which Diageo has already invested in upgrading and developing its Port Ellen Maltings on Islay over the past three years.

The refurbishment work is scheduled to take six months beginning in June, following the Islay Festival. The distillery will be closed to public tours for that period; however, the popular distillery shop will remain open to visitors.

About Caol Ila

Caol Ila is the largest distillery on the Isle of Islay. Most of the output of Caol Ila goes to Diageo’s blended Scotch whiskies. But as a single malt Scotch Whisky, Caol Ila has enjoyed huge popularity and success since its relaunch in 2002.

Caol Ila is available in the following expressions:

– a 12 year old, that has won numerous Gold Medals including most recently the supreme prize, the Trophy for the best single malt whisky under 15 years old at the IWSC in 2010. It also won Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2009, Master at the Scotch Whisky Masters 2009, Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2010 and Master at the Scotch Whisky Masters 2010.

– An 18 year old.

– A Natural Cask Strength expression (with no age statement).

– A Distillers Edition of Caol Ila has also been warmly welcomed. It is double matured for up to six months in dark Moscatel caskwood, hand-selected to complement the whisky’s sweetly fruity, smoky intensity. It won Gold – Best in Class at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2009, and Gold at the International Spirits Challenge 2009

– Moch (Gaelic for Dawn) – a new expression with no age statement, recently launched for Friends of the Classic Malts

Enthusiasts have also enjoyed the unusual unpeated 8 year old and later 10 and 12 year old expressions of Caol Ila, which figure regularly among the annual Classic Malts Selection Special Releases.

The distillery was established in 1846 near Port Askaig by Hector Henderson, and borrows its Gaelic name from the sea sweeping past its dramatic and almost secret location, squeezed tight between the steep cliff and the sea, hard on the shores of the Sound of Islay with its fast and challenging currents. It was a spot originally chosen in 1846 partly because of the fresh water which still provides its main supply, rising from limestone in nearby Loch nam Ban, then falling to the sea at Caol Ila, just behind the distillery. Before electricity came to the island in the 1940s, this same stream, harnessed to water wheels, lent its motive power to everything in the distillery.

Latest Caol Ila Bottling Heralds A New ‘Dawn’

March 20, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

The New Caol Ila Moch ('Dawn') Bottling

The New Caol Ila Moch ('Dawn') Bottling

This spring sees the dawn of a new expression of Caol Ila, the famous Single Malt Scotch Whisky made on the east coast of Islay since the distillery was founded by Hector Henderson in 1846.

Caol Ila has released a new bottling specially for the Friends of the Classic Malts.

It is called Caol Ila Moch (meaning Dawn in Gaelic) Single Malt Scotch Whisky and is the latest exciting addition to the Caol Ila family. It is the first single malt from the distillery to be selected entirely on the basis of its taste, rather than age, cask wood, strength or finish.

Islay’s east coast is the first on the island to see the dawn, just as it is the first – shielded by Cnoc Dubh, the Black Hill behind the distillery – to receive the night as the sun sinks in the Atlantic on the far side of the island.

The Whisky Exchange described Caol Ila Moch: “A hugely enjoyable romp through Islay’s middle ground. … Caol Ila Moch is a joy, it’s as simple as that. …”

And the cask-strength bloggers said: “An absolute delight …It’s consistent and totally moreish.”

Dave Broom tweeted: “Whisky Live London a pleasant memory … Best in show? Caol Ila Moch & Hazelburn Sauternes. …Seek it out by joining Friends of the Classic Malts.”

Caol Ila Moch is the latest in a long series of special bottlings for the Friends of the Classic Malts which will be available solely to Friends of the Classic Malts through The Whisky Exchange .

As Billy Stitchell, long-time distillery manager at Caol Ila, says: “Moch is selected for taste rather than age, and you’ll still find it every inch a Caol Ila. It’s a new departure for us, to have a whisky that’s not defined by age or strength or finish, but by taste, and it’s an exciting development.”

And why ‘Moch’? Billy said: “I’m an early riser, so for me, a day starts just before dawn. But this place is full of atmosphere at all times of day. The western light is something special and this far north we get wonderful sunsets over the hills and especially, clear dawn light flooding across the Sound, which is what came to mind when we were looking for a name for Moch.“

Tasting notes

Caol Ila Moch is bottled at 43% ABV and carries no age statement.

Appearance: Pale gold. Good viscosity.

Nose: Unreduced, clean and fresh like wet, salty sand after the tide has receded. Some smoke behind, as from an old bonfire. Adding a little water brings up more freshness.

Palate: Unreduced, sweet and salty with a balancing acidity, and fresh as a sea breeze. The trademark clean and smoky character of Caol Ila is here. Appetising. Adding water gives a smoother, softer, sweeter feel, still very maritime, with a nice texture. Sweetly drying overall.

Medium bodied, elegant and smooth.

Finish: Quite short, drying and warming with a little bitterness. Lingering smoky aftertaste.

Summary: An absolutely straightforward, no nonsense Caol Ila. Crisp, assertive, direct, and unmistakeable.

Also available in the Caol Ila range are Caol Ila 12 year old, Caol Ila 18 year old, Caol Ila 25 year old, Caol Ila Distillers Edition and Caol Ila Cask Strength.

They can all be viewed here: Caol Ila.

Smokehead Malt Whisky – A Novel Approach

Smokehead Islay Single Malt Whisky - A Novel Approach

Smokehead Islay Single Malt Whisky - A Novel Approach

Smokehead Islay Single Malt Whisky has formed a partnership with its namesake book, Smokeheads, the brand new release by Scottish writer Doug Johnstone.

Smokeheads is set on the famous whisky producing island of Islay, home to the mystery distillery which produces Smokehead Single Malt. The book follows four late-thirties ex-university mates heading to Islay with a serious thirst. ‘Four friends, one weekend, gallons of whisky. What could go wrong?’

Well quite a lot!

Over a weekend soaked in the finest cask-strength spirit, events spiral out of control, they are all thrown into a nightmare that gets worse at every turn.

Smokehead Single Malt sponsored the book’s launch event, held in Edinburgh’s Voodoo Rooms, where ‘Smoke and Coke’ was flowing, adding to the atmospheric reading by the author.

Smokehead is available from The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt

Tasting notes:
Nose: Heavy smoke and peat. Amazing richness. Lemon, fresh ginger, plum jam. Salty and spicy.
Body: Like a cannonball – hits the palate at once with cocoa, peat and some honey sweetness then explodes with peppery spice and more earthy peat. Spreads to all the areas of your mouth with more peat and light sweetness.
Finish: Even more peat, spice, mandarin – then dries up. When you think it’s all over the peat comes back to hit you again.
Impression: A rollercoaster of peat and spice with some delicate sweetness.
