The Macallan – Rare And Increasing In Price

May 24, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Macallan 1950 / 52 Year Old / Fine & Rare #598

Macallan 1950 / 52 Year Old / Fine & Rare #598

The Macallan malt whisky has seen a steep increase in retail prices in it’s highly collectable ‘Fine & Rare’ range in the past week with prices rising by between 2% and a whopping 59%. Though the average was a much more sedate 10%.

So it can only be concluded that these malts are becoming rarer and more sought after. Low stocks with high demand and price increases are inevitable and they certainly seem to be out-stripping the rate of inflation and the general increases in the cost of living.

The 59% increase goes to the Macallan 1950 / 52 Year Old / Fine & Rare – (Increase: £2,751.45 Percentage Rise: 59% Now: £7,450.00 Was: £4,698.55 )

If you’re looking into collecting then maybe The Macallans are worth investigating. With dwindling supplies and no forseeable decrease in demand, prices are set to increase further.

The full details are shown below:-

The Whisky Pod Gets Social At Glengoyne

The Whisky Pod in action

The Whisky Pod in action

Following a successful debut at The Whisky Show and Whisky Live London, connosr.com, the social network for whisky lovers, took their video review booth – the WhiskyPod – on the road for an exclusive event, hosted in partnership with Glengoyne distillery. A lucky group of 25 Connosr members were treated to a VIP visit to the distillery and a tasting of some very special whiskies.

The tasting was the first time that a Connosr event has been hosted in partnership with a distillery and to celebrate Glengoyne provided some of their oldest and rarest bottlings including the Glengoyne 40 Years Old. The guests also tasted the award winning 17 Years Old and 21 Years Old from the core range and the 23 Year Old Single Cask.

Each of the guests were then asked to review the drams in the WhiskyPod to create a special collection of video tasting notes which can be viewed online at Glengoyne WhiskyPod videos.

Reviewers included Gavin Thompson who commented: “The Glengoyne 40 Years Old is unadulterated pleasure, absolutely gorgeous. It’s not just that though, the whole night has made it for me, on my first ever distillery tour, to actually have a 40 year old whisky in my hand is a real pleasure.”

Pierre Thiebaut, founder of Connosr.com said: “Glengoyne has been a loyal supporter of Connosr since it was created, spotting the potential of the online whisky community early on, so it seemed fitting that our very first exclusive event was in partnership with Glengoyne and its team.

“We knew that, while they are quite traditional in the way they make whisky, they are very forward thinking in they way they communicate. As such we thought they’d make an excellent partner for the first bespoke WhiskyPod event. And we weren’t wrong, they pulled out all the stops and it was a great evening.

“Our members who attended on the night thoroughly enjoyed the event and the feedback we had was excellent – there was a real buzz about the evening. Everyone was blown away by the selection of whiskies. The response since has been terrific, the videos from the night are a high traffic area for us at the moment so, all in all, it’s been an unqualified success.”

Iain Weir, Marketing Director for Glengoyne said: “Online communities have become such an important place for whisky fans to gather in order to share news, views and opinions so we are always looking for new ways to reach out to them and reward them. We are currently in the process of updating our website to make it more accessible for social media users and are always looking for innovative groups and events like Connosr to work with, both on and offline, in order to reach new audiences.”

Islay Festival 2011 – Lagavulin & Caol Ila Special Bottlings

May 16, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

13-Year Old Lagavulin

13-Year Old Lagavulin

Two limited edition single-cask bottlings of Lagavulin and Caol Ila Single Malt Scotch Whiskies will be released for the 2011 Islay Festival.

Like previous Festival bottlings, it’s anticipated that they will be much in demand from enthusiasts. Often selling out within hours of going on sale, they will be available to personal shoppers at the distilleries only.

13-Year Old Lagavulin

The Lagavulin Festival bottling comes from a Refill Butt filled in February 1998, selected from Warehouse Number 1 by Iain McArthur, long-time warehouseman at the distillery. It has been bottled in an edition of 588 bottles at its natural cask strength of 51% ABV.

Lagavulin Feis Bottling 2011

One of Diageo’s tasters commented on its “approachable fruit tones and late, cleansing anise-like notes, against a backdrop of appetising smoke”.

Caol Ila Feis Bottling 2011

Caol Ila Feis Bottling 2011

Bodega-cask Caol Ila

The Caol Ila single cask bottling – hand selected by Billy Stitchell, long-standing distillery manager, whose family connections with Caol Ila distillery go back many generations – has been drawn from a bodega cask filled in February 2000. It enjoys a high natural cask strength of 64.3% ABV, in an edition of 600 bottles.

Caol Ila Feis Bottling 2011

“A lean and precise whisky at cask strength … altogether longer and more structured with water. Complex and provocative throughout …” were some of our taster’s comments.

The Lagavulin single-cask bottling will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis at the distillery, starting on the distillery’s open day, Saturday 21 May. The Caol Ila bottling will be sold with effect from Monday 23 May which is the Caol Ila open day.

Both bottlings are priced at £79.95 per bottle.

Nick Morgan, Diageo’s Scotch Knowledge and Heritage Director, said: “Whisky lovers travel from all over the world to visit the Islay Festival.

“These two carefully chosen single cask bottlings are both outstanding examples of Islay whiskies, conveying something of the island’s magic for those lucky enough enjoy them on their return home.”

During the Festival, a series of special events will be held at both Lagavulin and Caol Ila distilleries, including tastings with the distillery manager and warehouse demonstrations. There will be also be tours of the Port Ellen Maltings.

Jim Beam - Red Stag 70cl Bottle

Jim Beam – Red Stag 70cl Bottle
Country: American   Region: American
Summary: Aroma: Distinctively fruity, without disguising the familiar rich nose of Jim Beam bourbon. Taste: Corn sweetness and mellow oak accented by a hint of black cherry for smoothness and balance. Finish: Satiny and judiciously sweet, with a true bourbon warmth. It's a brilliantly bold combination: Through a slow infusion process, Jim Beam's distillers start with fine four-year-old Jim Beam Bourbon and then complement its distinctive taste with hints of natural black cherry flavour. The result is like nothing you've experienced before, and one sip will have you rethinking bourbon. Sometimes the uncharted path delivers the most delicious rewards. Red Stag by Jim Beam is a sweet, well-rounded taste and delicious mixed or straight up.

Black Bottle - Standard 70cl Bottle

Black Bottle – Standard 70cl Bottle
Country: Scotland   Region:
Summary: The Island of Islay is renowned all over the world for its intensely powerful and charismatic Scotch whiskies. Black Bottle is totally unique in being created from whiskies from all seven of the famous distilleries on Islay. Its spiritual home is the Bunnahabhain distillery in the north-east of the Island. Black Bottle was created in 1879 by Gordon Graham and Co. based in Aberdeen. The three Graham brothers – (Charles Innes, Gordon and David) original business was tea but they switched their attention to whisky blending. Soon the popularity of the whisky spread through the East Coast fishermen who favoured it on long sea journeys. Black Bottle's name came from its original bottle design based on black German glass and echoing the traditional pot whisky still. In 1914, following the outbreak of war, production was switched to green glass as it is to be found today. Black Bottle has long been regarded as one of the smoothest and most balanced of the Scotch Whiskies. The skilful craft of blending only the finest malt and grain whiskies delivers a wonderfully balanced and whisky experience. Fresh and fruity on the nose it combines full, honeyed and delightfully smoky flavours that set it apart. The tasting experience is rounded off with a long and warming finish.
