Talisker 57° North Won A Master award

Diageo’s Single Malt Scotch Whiskies Lagavulin, Talisker and The Singleton of Glen Ord have added further polish to their global prestige and long record of success with major wins in the prestigious Scotch Whisky Masters competition held in London with the results being announced yesterday.

The Scotch Whisky Masters awards are decided by expert judging panels after an extensive and rigorous blind tasting process.

The panels, all independent of the whisky industry, included mixologists, managers of luxury hotels, bars and restaurants, global retailers, and leading whisky commentators including two former editors of Whisky Magazine, chaired by the widely-respected drinks journalist Patience Gould.

They awarded six ‘Master’ accolades – the highest award in the competition – to Diageo brands: Lagavulin 16 year old (adding to its already substantial collection of awards), The Singleton of Glen Ord 12 year old, now a major success in Asian markets, Talisker 57° North, The Distillers Editions of Cragganmore and Dalwhinnie – and a newcomer: Caol Ila Moch, a recently launched expression of the highly successful Islay malt without an age statement, destined initially for the exclusive enjoyment of the Friends of the Classic Malts.

Talisker confirmed its status as a regular winner by picking up three top medals: a Master for Talisker 57° North, and Gold medals for Talisker 10 year old and Talisker Distillers Edition.

Other Gold medal winners were: Caol Ila 12 year old, Cardhu 12 year old, Cragganmore, 12 year old, Dalwhinnie 15 year old, Glenkinchie 12 year old, Glenkinchie Distillers Edition, Lagavulin Distillers Edition and The Singleton of Glendullan 12 year old.

Nick Morgan, Diageo Scotch Knowledge and Heritage Director, said: “These are outstanding results. And we value this increasingly-influential competition. It stands out by the independence of its judging panels, with members drawn from a wide cross-section of drinks professionals and commentators, many of whom are close to the tastes of our target consumers.”

In addition The Whisky Exchange is now stocking their First Finnish malt! It’s the Teerenpeli 2003 / 8 Year Old Finnish Single Malt Whisky. The Teerenpeli distillery was founded in 2002 at the brewery of the same name in Lahti, Finland and the name means 'flirtation' or 'dalliance'.
The Whisky Exchange tried this 8 year old at ‘Whisky Live’ and were knocked out at how balanced and tasty it was. They think it will be a huge hit.

Whisky tourism has grown rapidly in Scotland over the past two years with Diageo, the country’s leading distillery operator, reporting an increase of almost 20 per cent in visitor numbers.

Tourists have flocked to the 12 distillery visitor centres run by Diageo across Scotland, with the number rising from 176,471 in 2008 to 194,505 in 2009 and to 210,432 in 2010 – an increase of 19 per cent over the two year period.

A staggering 43 different nationalities were recorded amongst the visitors to their distilleries last year, with UK tourists leading the way and accounting for 87,417 of the visits in 2010.

The other top countries, in terms of visitor numbers, reflected the traditional leading markets for Scotch whisky, with Germany, France, USA and Spain making up the top five.

The increasing popularity of Scotch in emerging markets around the world was also reflected with visitors from countries such as Brazil, China, India and Russian and Brazil enjoying tours of Diageo’s distilleries.

Diageo operates 28 malt whisky distilleries in Scotland, more than any other company, and with 12 of these having dedicated visitor centres it is also the leading provider of whisky tourism facilities. These include the homes of some of Diageo’s iconic Scotch whisky brands such as Glenkinchie, Talisker, Oban, Lagavulin, Dalwhinnie, Royal Lochnagar and Cardhu.

Despite its distant location, Talisker, on the Isle of Skye, was Diageo’s busiest distillery visitor centre with 50,550 people in 2010, a fantastic increase from 41,271 in 2008 and 47,115 in 2009.

Steve Blake, General Manager of Diageo’s Visitor Centres said the growing popularity of Scotch whisky combined with the high quality of visitor experience offered at the distilleries were the key factors in their increasing success.

He said: “We very much hope that as the popularity of Scotch continues to expand around the world we will be able to play a key role in attracting increasing numbers of visitors to Scotland.

“It is equally encouraging that we have seen such a healthy growth in UK visitors. It is clear that people love the magic, the mystery and the history of our Scotch whisky industry.”
