JAMESON LAUNCHES SECOND EDITION OF ITS FILM MAKING COMPETITION

November 20, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Dana Brunetti, President of Trigger Street Productions, with Kevin Spacey

Dana Brunetti, President of Trigger Street Productions, with Kevin Spacey

Jameson is launching it’s ‘Jameson First Shot’ short film competition for 2013, with two major Hollywood actors now involved in the project.

After the success of the first year which saw over five million people worldwide watching the three winning films starring Kevin Spacey, the second Jameson First Shot competition will offer talented amateur film-makers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with acting legend Kevin Spacey and for the first time, to direct double Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe.

Aspiring film-makers in South Africa, Russia and the USA are invited to submit a script inspired by one of the three themes – ‘legendary’, ‘humorous’ or a ‘very tall tale’ – by 1st January 2013 on www.jamesonfirstshot.com. All submitted scripts will be judged by an esteemed panel including Spacey, Dafoe and Dana Brunetti, President of Trigger Street Productions.

The shortlisted filmmakers will then go through to the next stage of the competition where they will have to demonstrate their directing skills, before the three winners – one from each country – are chosen and flown to Los Angeles to film their short film starring Willem Dafoe.

Howard Southern, International Marketing Director for Jameson says: “Last year’s Jameson First Shot competition was a runaway success and further established the exciting association Jameson has with the film industry. It is great to be able to offer aspiring film-makers such an amazing opportunity to help them turn their passion into a profession and we are thrilled to have such well-known Hollywood figures involved in this unique project. We are very proud of the strong associations Jameson has built with the film industry over the last 14 years and we’re delighted to say that the brand is now involved with cinema projects across more than 30 countries. This involvement really resonates with our consumers and ultimately works towards increasing brand loyalty amongst our target audience worldwide.”

Master Of Malt & That Boutique-y Whisky Company Release Batch 2!

November 16, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

The New Releases from That Boutique-y Whisky Company

The New Releases from That Boutique-y Whisky Company

Good news!

Master of Malt has announced the release of four new Single Malt Whiskies from That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

Doubly good news for me because the first batch sold out so quickly I didn’t even have time to blog about it!

The second instalment of whiskies from That Boutique-y Whisky Company hail from the Speyside distilleries of BenRiach, Aberlour, Aultmore and Benrinnes.

All are bottled without age statements (to demonstrate that the flavour of the whisky is more important than its age) and feature cult comic book style labels that reference various stories and in-jokes associated with the distilleries and the people connected to them.

Launched in September 2012, That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottles Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in the truest sense of the term, meaning that they are a blend of casks from a single distillery.

Remember to keep hold of your old bottles because you might just be able to play spot-the-difference with later batches – that’s if you look very carefully!

Aberlour – Batch 1 Nose: Raisins and dried apple lead to cox apples, cloudy apple juice, ground ginger and roast cocoa beans with maybe the slightest hint of smoke.
Palate: Rich, fruity and mouth-filling, with additional notes of ginger, barley and bitter dark chocolate.
Finish: The finish is substantial and well-rounded with burnt dry fruits, autumnal berries, Pink Lady apples and brandy cream flavours.
£43.95
Aultmore – Batch 1 Nose: Vanilla oak notes, followed by lemon zest and greengages. As the whisky opens up intense notes of cloves and lime zest reveal themselves.
Palate: The palate is layered with mixed spices, sweetened with creamy vanilla, and highlighted with notes of greengages and citrus peels.
Finish: The finish lingers with refreshing menthol, deep dark chocolate and tingling white pepper.
£34.95
BenRiach – Batch 1 Nose: Big fruity cherries, marmalade, a hint of red vermouth followed by subtle toffee and old leather. Then, just out of reach, is a little bit of peat just to remind you of BenRiach’s other personality.
Palate: Red cherries, strawberry coulis leading to floral heather and a (very small) pinch of peat.
Finish: The finish is soft and gentle with a sugar syrup quality flecked with strawberries and raspberries with the briefest suggestion of crushed black pepper.
£49.95
Benrinnes – Batch 1 Nose: A fat aroma of stewing peaches and lychees dominates the nose with side notes of a just opened packet of juicy sultanas and moist fruit cake. Positively enchanting!
Palate: Silky and oily with reduced tropical fruit juices, fireworks, grape juice and a sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Finish: Lingering firework smoke, rhubarb, passion fruit and peaches in a full-bodied and fruity finish.
£43.95

Edencroft – The New Balvenie 17 Year Old DoubleWood!

November 15, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Edencroft - Balvenie 17 Year Old DoubleWood

Edencroft - Balvenie 17 Year Old DoubleWood

Edencrofts have announced the new release from Balvenie of their 17 Year Old DoubleWood.

The whisky is now available to order from www.edencroft.co.uk (priced at £72.50) and deliveries will start from 26th November.
Stocks will be limited for this popular malt, so the Balvenie will be available on a first come, first served basis.

They also have limited stocks of the recently released 14 year old Caribbean cask at the unbeatable offer price of only £37.50 per bottle.

The Balvenie 17 Year Old DoubleWood is a significant new addition to the range from Scotland’s longest-serving Malt Master, David Stewart.

An elder sibling to Balvenie’s most popular expression, the new aged version shares the same DNA and the honeyed, spicy characteristics as the 12 Year Old. Although it is distinctly different, with deeper vanilla notes, hints of green apple, creamy toffee and a striking richness and complexity.

To craft the 17 Year Old, David Stewart, who celebrates his 50th year at The Balvenie, this year, returned to one of his most celebrated achievements – consecutive maturation in two different types of cask, a process often referred to as ‘cask finishing’.

This technique is at the heart of DoubleWood – it sees the whisky matured first in American oak barrels, which impart soft sweet vanilla notes, before being transferred to European oak sherry casks, where the second cask ageing adds rich spicy flavours that a depth and fullness of flavour.

World’s oldest single malt Scotch whisky goes on sale!

November 13, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old

The Glenlivet 70 Years Old

Today, the remaining bottles of the world’s joint oldest single malt Scotch whisky goes on sale.

Gordon & MacPhail is releasing the remainder of the 100 bottles of the Glenlivet 70 Years Old giving collectors and consumers (ones with deep pockets anyway!) a final chance to own a piece of Scotland’s liquid history.

Distilled in 1940, the first batch of the Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old was released in March 2011 and met with international acclaim. All 100 large decanters sold out quickly.

The decanters now on sale are the last drops left of the Glenlivet 70 Years Old from this cask.

Michael Urquhart, Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the international interest for our Generations range. The Glenlivet 70 Years Old is a sublime whisky and is a treasure for whisky enthusiasts and collectors.

“Our family has passed its knowledge and expertise of Scotch whisky from generation to generation since we were founded over 117 years ago. We’re proud to be able to share this with the rest of the world.”

Cask 339 was filled at Glenlivet Distillery on 3rd February 1940, to the instruction of John Urquhart, grandfather and great-grandfather of Gordon & MacPhail’s current owners.

Seventy years on, the whisky has now been bottled at cask strength (45.9%).

World-renowned whisky expert, Charles Maclean, said: “The Glenlivet 1940 comes from a distillery which has been the benchmark against which other malts have been measured since the 1820s. Such a whisky will never be seen again. It is incredibly rare, and therefore highly collectable. But, more importantly, it is also celestial on the palate.”

Each bottle is presented in a tear-shaped hand-blown crystal decanter with an elegant British Hallmarked silver stopper. The decanter has a Sterling silver base and is framed in a handmade box, crafted in Scotland using Scottish Yew.

And now for the price – expect to pay around £15,000!

TASTING NOTE – Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old by Charles MacLean
(70YO Single cask Speyside @45.9%Vol)

Appearance: Deep amber, with tawny lights. First fill sherry butt.

Aroma: A mild nose-feel. The first aroma is of an old cocktail cabinet, with sherry notes predominating: polished wood, soft leather and a trace of candlewax. Behind this are fruity notes, lightly baked apples (even Tarte Tatin), but also fresh orange juice, and a thread of smoke or ash in the distance Adding a drop of water suppresses the fruity notes and slightly enhances the sweetness (now tablet) and smokiness.

Taste: A waxy, teeth-coating, mouthfeel; smooth and voluptuous. The taste is sweetish to start, then savoury, with a trace of salt – might this be a rare example of ‘umami’ in whisky, the elusive fifth primary taste? The finish is long, with a faint smokiness in the aftertaste. Drinks well at natural strength. With a drop of water the flavours remain intact.

Development: Fades gracefully towards vanilla fudge and sanded wood.

Comment: A stupendous whisky! Although it resonates with aged character – and indeed characteristics from another era – it retains vitality, both on the nose and in the mouth.
