The New Look Isle of Skye Blended Scotch Whisky

The Isle of Skye Blended Scotch Whisky range has been given a label makeover by it’s owners: Ian Macleod Distillers.

The new look of the award winning Isle of Skye 8 Years Old and 12 Years Old takes direct inspiration from the majestic scenery and romance of Scotland’s famous ‘Misty Isle’.

Evoking the Red and Black Hills of the Cuillin Mountains, the new label design introduces a striking watercolour sunset over the Isle of Skye and is coupled with a newly designed bottle.

Based on a family recipe that blends distinctive peaty Island and mellow Speyside Malts, Isle of Skye was created by the company’s founder Ian Macleod.

While the majority of Blended Scotch Whiskies are un-aged, Isle of Skye is unusual in its guarantee that all the Single Malts used in its blend recipe are matured in oak casks for at least 8 or 12 years.

Tasting notes

Isle of Skye 8 Years Old Blended Scotch Whisky
Nose: Stunningly evocative. Deep peaty tones waft from the glass, like the reek from a crofter’s lum. But there is a lot more beyond: the grains intermingle deliciously with oaky, vanilla notes and something malty and even slightly honeyed. The stuff of dreams.
Palate:Sweet at first, and remarkably viscous. This seems to be the peat hanging around and there is intense barley sugar and spice. Massively flavoured. This creaminess continues for what seems hours.
Finish:Remains sweet, spicy and chewy and at the end faintly nutty. The oak returns at the end.
Comments: The stuff of dreams.

Isle of Skye 12 Years Old Blended Scotch Whisky
Nose: Ripe, fruity and well balanced. Sherry, dried fruits and a hint of smoke. Water brings out a butter edge. A lot going on.
Palate: Overall, a little drier than the nose suggests but with excellent, soft, mid-palate weight. Light smoke all the way through.
Finish: Ripe and soft.
Comments:Very well balanced. A lovely blend.

The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2012

Bit of news from The Whisky Exchange today.

Firstly, the Ardbeg Embassy at The Whisky Exchange Vinopolis will be celebrating Ardbeg Day on June 2nd 2012. This is to tie in with the festivities at the Ardbeg Distillery as part of the Islay Festival of Music and Malt.

As part of the celebrations they’ll have a giant bottle of the distillery’s celebratory Feis Ile whisky, appropriately named ‘Ardbeg Day’.
Ardbeg Committee members can take advantage of a few drams who come to visit on the day, as well as to any friends they might be able to tempt along to sign up.

A big plus is that TWE will also be receiving a small number of normal sized bottles of the Ardbeg Day whisky to sell to Committee members.

These will ONLY be available through Ardbeg Embassies, so they are not expected to last long!

Bear in mind that:
* It’s one bottle per person.
* No preordering.
* First come, first served.
* The shop will be open from 10:30am and Vinopolis from 8:30am.
* If you want to queue then please do so by the Bar Blue entrance to Vinopolis on the corner of Clink Street and Bank End until Vinopolis opens, and then by the entrance to TWE inside Vinopolis.
* If you queue make sure you’re in the right place – if you’re not then you probably won’t get a bottle!

The second bit of news is that The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2012 tickets are now on sale!

The prestigous food and whisky tasting experience is again taking place at Vinopolis, London’s premium wine and spirit destination, the Show will run across the weekend of 6th-7th October 2012 from 12pm-6pm.

The show last year was a sell-out and this year promises to sell-out quickly as well. Like the 1,000+ guests that attended last year. Visitors will once again have the opportunity to taste some of the world’s finest whiskies including rare single malts and once-in-a- lifetime Dream Drams – exclusive whiskies that can cost several thousand pounds a bottle.
As part of this year’s ‘Meet the Maker’ theme, visitors will also be able to enjoy informal Q&A sessions and mini masterclasses with the experts.

A two course whisky-inspired meal in the Show Brasserie is also included, as well as ideas for matching whisky with quality foods. Whisky and food writer Martine Nouet will be on hand to offer a series of food and whisky pairing masterclasses during the Show.

The Shows Director Sukhinder Singh said:
“The Show is now in its fourth year and it continues to grow each year as people seek out opportunities to try the finest whiskies available and explore ideas for pairing with a range of delicious foods. It really is the pinnacle in the field of consumer whisky tasting events, with each successive year introducing innovative ideas which set it in a class apart from other whisky shows.”

Some very special whisky tasting news here: There’s to be a Glen Garioch Malt Whisky Tasting with Morrison Bowmore Malt Master Iain McCallum at TWE Vinopolis. The tasting will take place on Monday 28th May at 7:30pm.

Glen Garioch has been part of the Morrison Bowmore group since 1970 and is often seen as one their quieter distilleries. However, this is not quite the full picture.
Their whisky range was relaunched in 2009, breathing new life into the brand and their recent whiskies have revealed that they are anything but ‘quiet’.

Glen Garioch is now seen as a connoisseur’s dram, with the standard expressions now bottled un-chillfiltered at 48%. They’ve also complimented their range by yearly releases of cask strength vintage bottlings.

So it’s a rare honour to be joined by the company’s Malt Master Iain McCallum to lead us through a selection of their whiskies.

Iain will take us through the Glen Garioch range, showing the evolution of the whisky over the last 40 years and its emergence as a formidable single malt.

The Masterclass will start with the Founder’s Reserve and the World Whisky Award-winning 12 year old, before moving through the 1994, 1991, 1986 and 1978 vintage whiskies, ending on the excellent 1971 single cask, bottled in conjunction with The Whisky Exchange and launched at their Whisky Show in 2011.

Tickets are priced at £25 and will go on sale on Wednesday 16th May at 3pm.
