The Whisky Exchange WHISKY SHOW

As The Whisky Exchange (TWE) Whisky Show gets ever closer (7th and 8th October 2011), the folks at the Whisky Exchange are now able to release their most up to date list of Dream Drams that their exhibitors will be providing for tasting at the Show.

And what a list it is!

So, here’s a quick reminder of how the Dream dram tokens system works:-

• All Visitors will be given two Dream Dram tokens on arrival at the Show.
• Additional Dream Dram tokens can be purchased during the day at £10 each
• These tokens can be exchanged for Dream Drams at participating stands throughout the Show
in the following way:-

1. For whiskies with an RRP of up to £1000 = 1 Dream Dram token
2. For whiskies with an RRP of up to £2000 = 2 Dream Dram tokens
3. For whiskies with an RRP of £2000+ = 3 Dream Dram tokens

Well that’s the technical details over with but the question on everyone’s dramming tasting lips are:

“Which to choose?”

There’s brand new or unreleased exclusives such as Old Pulteney 40yo, Glenglassaugh 1966, Glenfiddich 1974 and Drambuie Jacobite (made with 45 year-old Speyside malt, this is surely the poshest whisky liqueur ever released).

Meanwhile, they also have a range of classic older bottlings from the yesteryears of some of the world’s greatest distilleries, including Bowmore, Glenlivet, Auchentoshan and Midleton, plus arguably the greatest blended whisky ever released: The John Walker.

Finally, visitors to the previous events will be delighted to hear that plenty of favourites from previous events will be returning for 2011, including 40 year-old drams from Highland Park, Springbank and Glengoyne – the latter of which won Dram of the Festival at last year’s Whisky Show.

More details and a full list of exhibitors at the Show are available at whisky-show.com.

Benromach’s first major venture into the arts has proven to be a huge success as its partnership with The National Theatre of Scotland’s production of The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, sold out at two venues in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The show, which opened at the Òran Mór in Glasgow before transferring to the Ghillie Dhu for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011 was seen by over 4,000 people of whom more than half enjoyed a tasting of Benromach expressions.

More than 2,500 people sampled Benromach 10 Years Old, Benromach Organic or Benromach Peat Smoke at the bar after the performance with all attendees receiving a miniature of Benromach Traditional to take away.

A highly original performance created by writer David Greig and Wils Wilson and inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service, The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theatre into pubs and other unlikely venues where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on in an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre.

The show won five star reviews and sold out in Edinburgh two days after the festival started. It also won a Herald Angel award and was nominated for Best Ensemble and Best Actress for the Stage Awards for Acting Excellence at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Commenting on the success of the sponsorship, David Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said:

“The sponsorship between Benromach and The Strange Undoings of Prudencia Hart has been a huge success raising awareness of and helping the brand reach a wider audience, enabling us to grow in an area which we never had much presence in before.

“We are proud to have shared the Benromach secret with art aficionados and festival goers, and I’d like to thank the National Theatre of Scotland for giving us that opportunity.”

Elly Rothnie, Development Director, National Theatre of Scotland had this to say: “2011 is a milestone year for us as we celebrate five years of being Scotland’s National Theatre and the partnership with Benromach has been a wonderful birthday present. “

“The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart went down a storm at the Fringe and our audiences appreciated the chance to sample one of Scotland’s finest malt whisky as part of the experience.”

About Benromach
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres, the Benromach Distillery is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. From Speyside’s smallest whisky distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand-made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.

Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

Benromach expressions include:
Benromach Ten Years Old
Benromach Ten Years Old is created from the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach hills. After being matured for at least ten years, it emerges golden in colour and displays rich fruit, sweet chocolate and delicate spicy aromas. With a rich sherry influence, the mouth-watering palate coats the senses with exotic fruit flavours, toasted malt and a delicate hint of smoke.

Benromach Traditional
A rich and mellow single malt with fruit and malty tones, balanced with a hint of smoke.

Benromach Peat Smoke
Full bodied, intense and challenging with a smoky character, yet balanced with the fruity elegance of Speyside.

Benromach Origins
A series of special bottlings crafted to highlight how small changes in the art of whisky-making can help to shape the character of the final single malt.

Summary: 70cl / 40% / Distillery Bottling – A tad less peaty than early bottlings, the classic Ardbeg 17 year old is still a great whisky, but is sadly becoming very thin on the ground as demand increases and supply runs low – it's now a good few years since owners Glenmorangie discontinued it. The first bottling of this sparked the revival of Ardbeg's fortunes after the takeover by Glenmorangie.

Benromach to Share the Secret with the Arts

Gordon & MacPhail, owners of Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is sponsoring the National Theatre of Scotland’s successful production The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, in the company’s first major venture into the arts.

The new partnership has been successful in securing a Scottish Government Arts & Business New Arts Grant, designed to build private sector sponsorship of the arts, and has made it possible for Benromach to sponsor the show for its entire six week run.

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart

(Photo: Drew Farrell)

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theatre into pubs and other unlikely venues, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. It’s an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service. The show opens at Òran Mór in Glasgow on 21 July 2011 before transferring to Ghillie Dhu for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 2 – 27 August 2011.

Commenting on the sponsorship, David Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said:

“The National Theatre of Scotland is the perfect partner for Benromach. It is a pleasure to be associated with such an individual and artistic performance, which we feel reflects many of the distinctive qualities of the various expressions of our malt whisky. We look forward to the continued success of The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart and to being able to share the secret of Benromach with the audience.”

In atmospheric pubs in Glasgow and Edinburgh audiences can look forward to an afternoon of anarchic theatre, haunting folk music, wild karaoke and strange goings-on. Watching with a refreshment to hand is recommended.

The tale of Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, follows her as she sets off to attend a conference one wintery morning in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her there. Her wild journey through the night takes her into and out of different supernatural and natural realms looking for folk songs.

Elly Rothnie, Development Director, National Theatre of Scotland is delighted to welcome Benromach on board as sponsors. She said:

“2011 is a milestone year for us as we celebrate five years of being Scotland’s national theatre and the partnership with Benromach is a wonderful birthday present.
“The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart is a terrific show that showcases some of Scotland’s finest contemporary artistic talent in the unique atmosphere of traditional Scottish pubs and we know it will provide a fantastic platform for the Benromach brand.”

Those attending the performance will be invited to sample Benromach 10 Years Old, Benromach Organic or Benromach Peat Smoke at the bar after the performance and will also receive a miniature of Benromach Traditional to take away.

Benromach Adds To It’s Range

June 16, 2011 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromach has added three new expressions of the famous single malt whisky to its range.

Benromach is Speyside’s smallest distillery, based in the attractive Moray town of Forres, the gateway to Scotland’s famous whisky producing region.

Established in 1898, Benromach distillery changed hands many times and was virtually derelict when bought by family firm Gordon & MacPhail in 1993. Drawing on generations of whisky expertise, the company carried out a painstaking refurbishment and the distillery was officially re-opened by Prince Charles in 1998.

Benromach Wood Finish Hermitage is a subtly smoky single malt Scotch whisky with a distinctly French flavour. The malt was matured in sherry and bourbon casks, before being transferred into oak casks for 22 months that had been used to produce wine from the Hermitage Appellation d’Origine Controlee, in the northern Rhone wine region of France.

Matured in first fill bourbon barrels, Benromach Cask Strength is a mouth warming and smooth single malt with hints of spice. Containing earthy influences it also has a delicate peaty edge and is bottled at 59.9% ABV.

Benromach 30 Years Old is a smooth and creamy single malt whisky with warming festive hints of sherry and spices. Matured in sherry casks the bright gold, medium malt also has hints of peat emerging.

Benromach can be obtained from The Whisky Exchange and Master of Malt.
