Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series – New Release

July 10, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Bruichladdich's Latest Release Of The Islay Barley Series

Bruichladdich's Latest Release Of The Islay Barley Series

The latest edition of Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series, this one from Dunlossit Farm, has been released.

The Islay Barley Series is the ultimate expression of Islay, a single malt whose provenance and traceability is as unparalleled as the origin is unique.
Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series showcases the first single malt whiskies in a century to be exclusively Islay made.
Be it from barley to barrel to bottle.

Bruichladdich feels that because of increasing production efficiency and global market raw material sourcing, the real sense of place, the terroir from which Scotch whisky originated, has been lost.

So, Bruichladich have set out to rectify this with a single malt that was made from barley sown and grown on the Isle of Islay.

The unpeated barley has been distilled in to Bruichladdich whisky, warehoused and matured and finally bottled still on the Hebridean island at Bruichladdich Distillery.

The terroir for this whisky is a desolate place known as the ‘headland of the gallows’. This lonely field is a rare patch of fertility amongst the barren, rocky outcrops and peat bogs tilled continually since Neolithic times.
(Interestingly, evidence of Islay’s earliest farmers, dated to 6,000 years ago, was discovered in this soil only last year.)

Chalice barley was grown by farmer Jim Logan in what is now called the Jubilee field (Queen Victoria’s, not Elizabeth’s), on Dunlossit land owned by Bruno Schroder, a Bruichladdich shareholder.
It was harvested in September 2006 and distilled eight weeks later.

Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series is the ultimate in whisky terroir – where once again land and dram are united.

Non chill-filltered, and colouring-free, Bruichladdich’s Islay Barley Series “Dunlossit” is bottled at 50% ABV.

Bruichladdich History
In the mid nineteenth century, 4000 acres of malting barley were grown on the island of Islay, but due to The Great War and its Islay casualties, the yield
collapsed to zero.
The programme by Bruichladdich to re-establish the cereal on the island now means 800-1000 tons, a quarter of the Victorian era yield, is now harvested for Bruichladdich.

It’s the black art of man-made spirit, nature’s natural resources, and the distiller’s never-ending quest to find the ultimate taste experience. Nose: This whisky has an incredibly sweet nose with some savoury notes peeking through. Marshmallows in abundance – the vanilla variety, with icing sugar and foam bananas adding to the sweetness. Upon further nosing the fruit makes an appearance, brambles, mandarines and over ripe damson fruits. Some savoury notes pushing through such as linseed oil – do we smell cricket bats? Palate: This dram coats your palate in a waxy fashion with its continuing sweet flavours as described on the nose. But there is also the familiar, well balanced trace of smoke which makes this a brilliantly complex wee dram that will make you feel right at home no matter where you are. Finish: The creaminess of this whisky means it doesn't go away – you feel the warmth of this Longrow all the way down to your boots, creamy, sweet with a gentle smoke finish.

Glengoyne Distillery, Strathblane, Scotland. TV presenter, wine expert and newspaper columnist Olly Smith today visited the distillery for a one to one coaching session from distillery manager Robbie Hughes. Also present was Danielle Murphy from Ian MacLeod Distillers.

Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Whisky teamed up with Olly Smith, one of the TV’s most popular and charismatic drinks experts, at the Ideal Home Show Scotland 2012 in Glasgow earlier this month. They hosted a number of special tasting sessions across Glengoyne’s award-winning whisky range.

The event took place in the Celebrity Chef Theatre, offering whisky aficionados and novices an entertaining Masterclass on the Glengoyne range and to learn something new about Scotland’s national spirit.

Olly Smith

Olly Smith

Olly also visited the Glengoyne Distillery to experience the home of the leading malt whisky for himself, meeting Distillery Manager Robbie Hughes and to get a taste for Glengoyne at its source. Glengoyne is one of Scotland’s most accessible distilleries, located just 30 minutes north of Glasgow in a beautiful wooded glen overlooking the breath-taking West Highland Way.

The mouth-watering journey started with the delicate sweet nose of fresh apples from the Glengoyne 10 Years Old, before the enjoying the more bourbon influences of Glengoyne 12 Years Old.
A Single Malt which can’t help improving with age, the nutty, spicy flavours of the Glengoyne 17 Years Old were the perfect predecessor to the riot of toffee, spice and sherry that the Glengoyne 21 Years Old is famous for.

Olly said: “The Glengoyne range has a vibrant fruity character across the board with delightful purity in every sip, whether it’s light and refreshing or deep and rich. The casks impart complexity and depth as the whiskies gently develop with age.

“I loved visiting the intimate Glengoyne Distillery and it was a great opportunity to share these brilliant drinks with visitors at The Ideal Home Show Scotland too.”

Olly hosts a variety of live events around the UK including the BBC Good Food Show, Tapas Fantasticas, and previously Masterchef Live, Love Cooking, Taste of London and the F-Word Live for Channel 4.
Olly is also a Wine Editor for The Mail on Sunday’s Live Magazine, writes weekly for Waitrose Weekend, monthly for Waitrose Kitchen, as well as features for numerous other publications.

Visitors are welcome at the distillery visitor centre where tours of Talisker Distillery are available. The nose is very clean and intense, with light smoke soon appearing. Creamy toffee, with pronounced fruit acidity. Tart fruit, sweet to start, with smoke and tar abruptly exploding around the middle of the mouth. Sweet-centred, a little like liqueur chocolate, yet tempered by a savoury edge that stops things becoming too polite. The finish is oily and fairly medicinal with a drying tartness.

The tall square four stage still house which housed Convalmore’s continuous still is still standing and is one of only two remaining in Scotland, the other is at the site of Kirkliston Distillery near Edinburgh. The distillery closed in 1985 and whilst the buildings are still standing all the equipment has been removed and so Convalmore Distillery is one of Speyside’s lost malt whisky distilleries. Nose: Light estery notes, hints of vanilla and fruity. Palate: Spicy – pepper, sweet and mouth watering. Finish: Well balanced.
