Tasting Notes:

Nose – Huge sherry! Very sweet dried fruits, grapefruit and pineapple, butterscotch, green apple orchard pollen leading to closing seaside brine.

Palate – Incredibly clean, huge sherry overload explodes on the mouth, great proof in this one. Oily mouth feel, ash, menthol, with long warming spices and butter – excellent balance leading to a soft finish of runny honey and more sherry!

Caol Ila Caol Ila Distillery on the Isle of Islay is famous for the stunning view from the still house windows looking out across the Sound of Islay and for the objects which have passed by including naval battleships, smugglers in dinghies, submarines and whales. Now the largest malt whisky distillery on Islay and visitors are welcomed at the distillery visitor centre where distillery tours are available. Wonderfully concentrated pure, clean Caol Ila – peaty and medicinal, with rich fruit, spicy and fragrant. Sweetness and maltiness strike first, then are quickly overwhelmed by peat smoke and intense, clean, crisp flavours. Caol Ila’s signature smoky bonfires are here, and build to quite a size.

Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age:    Strength:
Summary: Single refill sherry hogshead #706. 2nd release bottled to commemorate Benromach's support of the Clipper 07-08 round the world yacht race. Ten years later it was purchased by the independent bottler Gordon and MacPhail who fired up its single pair of stills in 1998 and nurtured Benromach ever since. Benromach Distillery welcomes visitors into the Benromach Distillery visitor centre, offers distillery tours and is a participant in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Glenfarclas 1959 Family Casks Iv 50 Year Old

Glenfarclas 1959 Family Casks Iv 50 Year Old
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 50 Year Old   Strength:
Vintage: 1959   Bottler:
Summary: Single sherry hogshead cask #1838. 50 year old single malt Scotch distilled in 1959 and bottled August 2009 yielding just 147 bottles. Considered to be one of the very best in the series. One of the famous vintage casks from the Glenfarcas Family Casks series running consecutively covering the years from 1952 to 1996. Glenfarclas Glenfarclas Distillery was established by Robert Hay in Speyside in 1836. John Grant purchased Glenfarclas in 1865 and it has remained in the ownership of the Grant family ever since. The interior of the visitor centre is stunning, the walls are lined with the original oak panels salvaged from a lounge on the liner SS Empress of Australia when she was scrapped 1952. Ace sherry casks underpin the ethos of Glenfarclas malt whisky, having released its first cask strength single malt way back in 1968 and in 1973 became the third to open a distillery visitor centre. Glenfarclas Distillery participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. The nose is still emanating some fresh aromas, with heavy oloroso sherry punching its way through. A strong alcohol nose, very surprising for the age. However , the taste is nothing like the nose, very mellow and pleasing, textures similar to a fine old port, very smooth and heavy tannins mixed together with wonderful sweetness. A whisky you really can enjoy, savour and appreciate time after time. A very long aftertaste that lingers for hours. Christmas flavours ever present – spice, icing, alcohol soaked fruit and of course sherry.

Glenfarclas Distillery participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Chocolate cocoa beans that have been dipped into treacle. Leathery and a hint of plum brandy, a surprising combination of aromas for the age. Incredibly smooth, rich dark chocolate, rather bitter on the offset, giving way to heavily sherried dryness. Medium finish rather short, but for the 50 year old experience a true whisky to behold.

Light tannins, more from Burgundy wine than a big Bordeaux. Almost like a polished segment of sandalwood, a very fragrant whisky. Smooth and very palatable, leaves you wanting more. Not as dry on the palate as it is on the nose. Long, delicate, lightly leathery, a very typical Glenfarclas

St Magdalene (Linlithgow) St. Magdalene malt whisky distillery was established by Sebastian Henderson in Linlithgow sometime between 1753 and 1798. During the 1810s St. Magdalene Distillery was amalgamated with its near neighbour Bonnytoun Distillery. The Union Canal was constructed right on its southern doorstep during the early nineteenth century then the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway steamed right past on its northern doorstep and ensured easy access to rapidly expanding markets. St. Magdalene Distillery closed in 1983 and was later converted into private housing and is now a lost Scottish Lowland malt whisky distillery. All the whisky from St. Magdalene’s four stills went into blends during its working life, the few single cask bottlings are a modern development. On the nose sherry notes with strong fruit aromas – melons, red apples. Dry, hessian note with herbal, bracken aromas. Sweet palate, winey with oak and hop flavours. Some heather blossom (honey) elements.

Ten years later it was purchased by the independent bottler Gordon and MacPhail who fired up its single pair of stills in 1998 and nurtured Benromach ever since. Age: 39 Year Old   Strength:
Summary: Matured in a 1st fill sherry butt, this is a fresh, fruity and spicy single malt. Distilled March 1972 and bottled August 2011. Caperdonich Distillery was situated beside the North of Scotland Railway in the north west corner of Rothes in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region and was established at a time when whisky sales were on the up and up. But Caperdonich Distillery opened just as whisky sales crashed and subsequent wars and prohibition inhibited its recovery. And having closed in 1902 it remained mothballed until 1965 when the stills were fired up once again. It closed once more in 2002, and now that we have finally come to appreciate the complexity and depth of Caperdonich malt whisky …… demolished in 2011. Caperdonich whisky was intended primarily for blended scotch but a small volume has been released by independent bottles as Caperdonich single malt whisky. A lost Scottish Speyside malt whisky distillery. On the nose: heavily sherried notes, almond influences – marzipan and Christams cake influences – rich fruits. Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the headline sponsor for the legendary Three Ten Series cross country mountain bike races.

Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been announced by No Fuss Events as headline sponsor for the legendary Three Ten Series cross country mountain bike races for the fifth consecutive year.

The Three Tens are a series of 10 hour mountain bike endurance events in which individuals or teams of two, three or four compete over a 10 mile course (approx) for 10 hours in a bid to complete the most laps.

The series will return to North Wales following last year’s success which saw around 300 professional, amateur and novice cyclists – including former trial world champion Ben Savage – compete in Coed Llandegla, Denbighshire. It was the first time the Benromach Three Tens Series has ever been held outside Scotland.

David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail, proprietors of Benromach Distillery said: “We’re excited to be continuing our sponsorship of the Three Tens as it grows in popularity across the UK and internationally. Those competing in these events are typical of the Benromach drinker being someone who is adventurous, challenges the norm and seeks to share experiences with like-minded people. We look forward to working with No Fuss to encourage more people to take part in these fun, sporting events.”

The event introduced by Fort William based No Fuss Events in 2005, has proved immensely popular, attracting both novice and experts to take on the challenge as teams. New for 2012 No Fuss and Benromach are also encouraging the country’s top pub, hotel or café mountain biking team, of various levels of ability, to take part in any of the 10’s series.

10 Under the Ben, the flagship of the series, will be held in Fort William – the UK’s premier mountain bike destination and Outdoor Capital of the UK – on Saturday 26 May. More than 750 riders from all over the UK and the rest of the world, including New Zealand and Canada, have experienced the awesome course on some fantastic trails within Forestry Commission Scotland’s Leanachan Forest. 10 at Kirroughtree will take place in Galloway on Saturday 7 July and 10 Yn Llandegla will round off the Benromach Three Tens Series in North Wales on the Saturday 18 August.

David (Spook) Murno, partner from No Fuss Events said: “We are delighted to be working with Benromach again in 2012, Benromach are part of the family at No Fuss. The events are all about recreational riders, as well as a scattering of elite racers, off road riders and weekend warriors participating in a sport that we all love, it’s all about like-minded people; and having a good time in a fun and relaxed environment.”

As well as commitment to the Three Ten Series, Benromach will provide spot prizes and the opportunity for participants to sample Benromach Traditional Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Located on the outskirts of Forres, Benromach is Speyside’s smallest working distillery. Only two experienced distiller’s hand-craft Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. Specially selected casks are then filled with the new make spirit before being left to mature at the distillery for many years.

To enter the mountain bike challenge visit www.nofussevents.co.uk. If you would like to represent your pub, hotel or café in the series then all you have to do is get a team of four together and purchase a ticket, come along and enjoy not only Great Mountain biking but craic and entertainment in abundance.
