Glenfarclas 1959 Family Casks Iv 50 Year Old

Glenfarclas 1959 Family Casks Iv 50 Year Old
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 50 Year Old   Strength:
Vintage: 1959   Bottler:
Summary: Single sherry hogshead cask #1838. 50 year old single malt Scotch distilled in 1959 and bottled August 2009 yielding just 147 bottles. Considered to be one of the very best in the series. One of the famous vintage casks from the Glenfarcas Family Casks series running consecutively covering the years from 1952 to 1996. Glenfarclas Glenfarclas Distillery was established by Robert Hay in Speyside in 1836. John Grant purchased Glenfarclas in 1865 and it has remained in the ownership of the Grant family ever since. The interior of the visitor centre is stunning, the walls are lined with the original oak panels salvaged from a lounge on the liner SS Empress of Australia when she was scrapped 1952. Ace sherry casks underpin the ethos of Glenfarclas malt whisky, having released its first cask strength single malt way back in 1968 and in 1973 became the third to open a distillery visitor centre. Glenfarclas Distillery participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. The nose is still emanating some fresh aromas, with heavy oloroso sherry punching its way through. A strong alcohol nose, very surprising for the age. However , the taste is nothing like the nose, very mellow and pleasing, textures similar to a fine old port, very smooth and heavy tannins mixed together with wonderful sweetness. A whisky you really can enjoy, savour and appreciate time after time. A very long aftertaste that lingers for hours. Christmas flavours ever present – spice, icing, alcohol soaked fruit and of course sherry.

Glenfarclas Distillery participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Chocolate cocoa beans that have been dipped into treacle. Leathery and a hint of plum brandy, a surprising combination of aromas for the age. Incredibly smooth, rich dark chocolate, rather bitter on the offset, giving way to heavily sherried dryness. Medium finish rather short, but for the 50 year old experience a true whisky to behold.

Glenfarclas Distillery participates in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. Cola Cubes, sweet and dry on the nose, an interesting combination. Light tannins, more from Burgundy wine than a big Bordeaux. Almost like a polished segment of sandalwood, a very fragrant whisky. Smooth and very palatable, leaves you wanting more. Not as dry on the palate as it is on the nose. Long, delicate, lightly leathery, a very typical Glenfarclas

During the 1810s St. Magdalene Distillery was amalgamated with its near neighbour Bonnytoun Distillery. The Union Canal was constructed right on its southern doorstep during the early nineteenth century then the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway steamed right past on its northern doorstep and ensured easy access to rapidly expanding markets. St. Magdalene Distillery closed in 1983 and was later converted into private housing and is now a lost Scottish Lowland malt whisky distillery. All the whisky from St. Magdalene’s four stills went into blends during its working life, the few single cask bottlings are a modern development. On the nose sherry notes with strong fruit aromas – melons, red apples. Dry, hessian note with herbal, bracken aromas. Sweet palate, winey with oak and hop flavours. But demand for scotch collapsed when the principle purchaser of Benromach’s malt whisky Pattison‘s of Leith went bankrupt and Benromach Distillery sat silent as the next decade rolled by. Intermittent production followed until major investment and refurbishment in the 1960s and 1970s turned Benromach into a thoroughly modern Speyside malt whisky distillery, only to close again in 1983. Ten years later it was purchased by the independent bottler Gordon and MacPhail who fired up its single pair of stills in 1998 and nurtured Benromach ever since. Benromach Distillery welcomes visitors into the Benromach Distillery visitor centre, offers distillery tours and is a participant in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. St. Magdalene Distillery closed in 1983 and was later converted into private housing and is now a lost Scottish Lowland malt whisky distillery. All the whisky from St. Magdalene’s four stills went into blends during its working life, the few single cask bottlings are a modern development. No tasting notes at present.

Caperdonich 39 Year Old Connoisseurs Choice

Caperdonich 39 Year Old Connoisseurs Choice
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 39 Year Old   Strength:
Summary: Matured in a 1st fill sherry butt, this is a fresh, fruity and spicy single malt. Distilled March 1972 and bottled August 2011. Previous bottlings of this vintage from Gordon & MacPhail have been sublime. Caperdonich Caperdonich Distillery was founded in 1897 and its two stills were fired up a year later. Caperdonich Distillery was situated beside the North of Scotland Railway in the north west corner of Rothes in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region and was established at a time when whisky sales were on the up and up. But Caperdonich Distillery opened just as whisky sales crashed and subsequent wars and prohibition inhibited its recovery. And having closed in 1902 it remained mothballed until 1965 when the stills were fired up once again. It closed once more in 2002, and now that we have finally come to appreciate the complexity and depth of Caperdonich malt whisky …… demolished in 2011. Caperdonich whisky was intended primarily for blended scotch but a small volume has been released by independent bottles as Caperdonich single malt whisky. A lost Scottish Speyside malt whisky distillery. On the nose: heavily sherried notes, almond influences – marzipan and Christams cake influences – rich fruits. Palate: mouth drying, prominent sweetness, fruity influences with a delicate dark chocolate edge.

Port Ellen was a malt whisky distillery but closed in 1983 and whilst the distillery buildings remain Port Ellen drum maltings occupy part of the site and participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music. Most recent official bottling of Port Ellen single malt whisky was the Port Ellen 11thRelease. During the winter of 1823-24 James Fox tested his newly designed spirit safe at Port Ellen Distillery prior to its introduction in all Scottish licenced distilleries by 1825 in order to comply with enactment of the Excise Act of 1823. Thus Port Ellen Distillery was the first Scottish distillery to install a spirit safe and James Fox was paid £428 for his work.  Nose: Sweet, with peppered kipper notes. Ozone and hints of driftwood. Traces of birchwood and charred woods emerge. Palate: Sweet, but ashy, peat smoke elements quickly emerge. Some hints of kippers linger.

Ben Wyvis 1965 / 37 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Ben Wyvis 1965 / 37 Year Old Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Country: Scotland   Region: Highland
Age: 37 Year Old   Strength: 44%
Vintage: 1965   Bottler:
Summary: 70cl / 44% / Distillery Bottling – The Ben Wyvis distillery was closed in 1976, just eleven years after it had opened as part of Whyte & Mackay's Invergordon complex. Only a handful of bottlings have ever been released, of which this is perhaps the most interesting. Having bottled what was believed to be the last casks of Ben Wyvis in 1999 under the name 'The Final Resurrection', Whyte & Mackay were somewhat taken aback to discover that one more cask did in fact exist in their warehouses.
