Benromach’s The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart Goes To The US!

Benromach Single Malt Whisky is set to go ‘across the pond’ with the National Theatre of Scotland as it continues to sponsor an international tour of the Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart in America.

The successful partnership with the National Theatre Scotland started with its support of the production at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year. And now the production will tour Scotland, England and internationally in 2012 and 2013.

Benromach Single Malt Whisky will sponsor some US dates, with American audiences being offered the opportunity to share a dram of the Speyside Scotch Malt during the show. This sponsorship will cover all US venues where state legislation allows and is part of Benromach’s venturing into the arts and their first foray into international arts touring.

The production will be staged in taverns, breweries, and community spaces and studios with bars built in, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. It’s an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service.

The show opens at the Wicked Wolf Tavern, Festival of New Ideas, New Haven in Connecticut on 20th June before moving on to North Carolina, Chicago, Massachusetts, Ohio, Purdue, Washington DC, Michigan, Texas and California. The production will also be visiting Vancouver, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand and Brazil.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Michael Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said: “We’re proud to be supporting this tour as it goes international. Scotland has many world-class artists and this individual and artistic performance deserves to be shared with the UK and people internationally. The US already enjoys one of Scotland’s other fine traditions being one of the largest export markets for Scotch whisky so we hope the audience enjoys sharing a free dram of Benromach with this great performance.”

The tale of Prudencia Hart, an uptight academic, follows her as she sets off to attend a conference one wintery morning in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. As the snow begins to fall, little does she know who or what awaits her there. Her wild journey through the night takes her into and out of different supernatural and natural realms looking for folk songs.

Elly Rothnie, Development Director, National Theatre of Scotland said: “The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart was a huge success at the Fringe last year and our audiences loved sampling one of Scotland’s finest malt whiskies as part of the experience. We are thrilled to continue this important partnership in 2012 where we will take the production and Benromach whisky to new audiences across the globe.”

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart originally toured Scotland in February 2011 subsequently playing at a number of top venues in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The production has won two awards, a CATS Award for Best Music and Sound and a Herald Angel.

About Benromach
Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres, the Benromach Distillery is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. From Speyside’s smallest whisky distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand-made credentials as well as encapsulating the self-reliance, sophistication and modern values of Scotland today.

Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. They personally ensure that only the highest quality spirit is filled into sturdy oak casks before being left to mature at Benromach Distillery for many years.

Benromach expressions include:

Benromach Single Malt Whisky is building on its successful partnership with the National Theatre of Scotland as it continues to sponsor a UK tour of the Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart 2012 tour, following its support of the production at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year.
The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart takes theatre into pubs and other unlikely venues, where stories are told, re-told, sung and passed on. It’s an evening of supernatural storytelling, music and theatre inspired by the Border Ballads, Robert Burns and the poems of Robert Service.

The show opens at the Adam Smith Theatre Kirkcaldy on Wednesday 11 April before moving on to Blair Atholl, Nethy Bridge, Edinburgh, Torry, Kippen, Crianlarich, Kilcreggan, West Kilbride, Carlops and Kelso.

Their sponsorship is part of Benromach’s venture into the arts and will enable each audience member in Scotland (18 years and above) to share a dram of Benromach Whisky during the show.

Commenting on the sponsorship, David Urquhart Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, owners of the Benromach Distillery in Forres, said: “We’re excited to be continuing our sponsorship of the arts as The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart grows in popularity across Scotland and the rest of the UK. It’s a pleasure to be associated with such an individual and artistic performance, which we feel reflects many of the distinctive qualities of the various expressions of our malt whisky.”

The production will also appear at UK festivals; including the Norwich and Norfolk Festival, Mayfest, Bristol and the Brighton Festival. The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart will then tour the UK and internationally until 2013.

Those attending the performance will be invited to sample Benromach 10 Years Old, Benromach Organic or Benromach Peat Smoke at the bar after the performance.

Elly Rothnie, Development Director, National Theatre of Scotland said: “The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart was a huge success at the Fringe last year and our audiences loved sampling one of Scotland’s finest malt whiskies as part of the experience. We are thrilled to continue this important partnership in 2012 where we will take the production and Benromach whisky to new audiences throughout the country.”

The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart originally toured Scotland in February 2011 subsequently playing at Latitude Festival, Òran Mór, Glasgow, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2011. The production has won two awards, a CATS Award for Best Music and Sound and a Herald Angel.

Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength:
Vintage: 1997   Bottler:
Summary: 1997 vintage of the stylish and complex double-matured expression of Caol Ila; the Moscatel cask wood not over-evident; richly flavoured yet also drying and finely balanced. Caol Ila Caol Ila Distillery on the Isle of Islay is famous for the stunning view from the still house windows looking out across the Sound of Islay and for the objects which have passed by including naval battleships, smugglers in dinghies, submarines and whales. Caol Ila Distillery was established in 1846 by Hector Henderson on a sheltered but rocky stretch of coast on north east Islay. Now the largest malt whisky distillery on Islay and visitors are welcomed at the distillery visitor centre where distillery tours are available. Caol Ila Distillery is a participant in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music. Wonderfully concentrated pure, clean Caol Ila – peaty and medicinal, with rich fruit, spicy and fragrant. Sweetness and maltiness strike first, then are quickly overwhelmed by peat smoke and intense, clean, crisp flavours. Caol Ila’s signature smoky bonfires are here, and build to quite a size.

Benromach Latitude 53 Single Cask #706

Benromach Latitude 53 Single Cask #706
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age:    Strength:
Summary: Single refill sherry hogshead #706. 2nd release bottled to commemorate Benromach's support of the Clipper 07-08 round the world yacht race. Benromach Benromach Distillery was designed by Charles C. Diog and constructed at Forres in 1898 and was due to commence production in 1899. But demand for scotch collapsed when the principle purchaser of Benromach’s malt whisky Pattison‘s of Leith went bankrupt and Benromach Distillery sat silent as the next decade rolled by. Intermittent production followed until major investment and refurbishment in the 1960s and 1970s turned Benromach into a thoroughly modern Speyside malt whisky distillery, only to close again in 1983. Ten years later it was purchased by the independent bottler Gordon and MacPhail who fired up its single pair of stills in 1998 and nurtured Benromach ever since. Benromach Distillery welcomes visitors into the Benromach Distillery visitor centre, offers distillery tours and is a participant in the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival. European Pipe Band Championships Set for Forres

The beautiful market town of Forres is set to host the Benromach European Pipe Band Championships for three consecutive years, bringing a projected £1.2 million of economic benefits to the town and the surrounding area.

The event which will run on a date yet to be confirmed during summer of 2013, 2014 and 2015 will attract over 100 pipe bands from throughout Europe to the town along with thousands of spectators and visitors.

The venue for the Benromach European Pipe Band Championships will be the Grant Park in Forres – a natural amphitheatre, located in the centre of the town.

Chairman of Forres Events Ltd, Ian Widdowson, said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing these Championships to Forres. As well as the obvious economic benefits for the area, this world class event will allow us showcase our beautiful town and enable locals and visitors alike to enjoy the very best in
traditional pipe band music.”

The announcement comes at the end of a three year project led by Gordon & MacPhail whose Benromach Speyside Single Malt Whisky will be title sponsor of the Championships.
David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail, proprietors of Benromach Distillery explains, “Since Gordon & MacPhail purchased Benromach Distillery in 1993 we have always been keen to consider ways of supporting the local community. These Championships provide a fantastic opportunity not only for Benromach but for local people and businesses alike.”

Forres was selected to host the European Pipe Band Championships by the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA). The decision was made at the RSPBA AGM in Glasgow on 10 March 2012.
RSPBA Chief Executive, Ian Embelton, said, “The RSPBA was very impressed with the Forres Bid to host the European Pipe Band Championships in 2013, 2014, 2015. They put together a professional presentation and made a compelling case for the event to come to the north of Scotland. The RSBPA remit is to promote and celebrate traditional pipe band music. Forres is in for a treat as some of the best pipe bands in Europe will descend on Forres over the next three years.”

Benromach Three Tens Continues for Fifth Year

February 21, 2012 by Gary Leave a Comment

Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the headline sponsor for the legendary Three Ten Series cross country mountain bike races.

Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the headline sponsor for the legendary Three Ten Series cross country mountain bike races.

Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been announced by No Fuss Events as headline sponsor for the legendary Three Ten Series cross country mountain bike races for the fifth consecutive year.

The Three Tens are a series of 10 hour mountain bike endurance events in which individuals or teams of two, three or four compete over a 10 mile course (approx) for 10 hours in a bid to complete the most laps.

The series will return to North Wales following last year’s success which saw around 300 professional, amateur and novice cyclists – including former trial world champion Ben Savage – compete in Coed Llandegla, Denbighshire. It was the first time the Benromach Three Tens Series has ever been held outside Scotland.

David Urquhart, Joint Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail, proprietors of Benromach Distillery said: “We’re excited to be continuing our sponsorship of the Three Tens as it grows in popularity across the UK and internationally. Those competing in these events are typical of the Benromach drinker being someone who is adventurous, challenges the norm and seeks to share experiences with like-minded people. We look forward to working with No Fuss to encourage more people to take part in these fun, sporting events.”

The event introduced by Fort William based No Fuss Events in 2005, has proved immensely popular, attracting both novice and experts to take on the challenge as teams. New for 2012 No Fuss and Benromach are also encouraging the country’s top pub, hotel or café mountain biking team, of various levels of ability, to take part in any of the 10’s series.

10 Under the Ben, the flagship of the series, will be held in Fort William – the UK’s premier mountain bike destination and Outdoor Capital of the UK – on Saturday 26 May. More than 750 riders from all over the UK and the rest of the world, including New Zealand and Canada, have experienced the awesome course on some fantastic trails within Forestry Commission Scotland’s Leanachan Forest. 10 at Kirroughtree will take place in Galloway on Saturday 7 July and 10 Yn Llandegla will round off the Benromach Three Tens Series in North Wales on the Saturday 18 August.

David (Spook) Murno, partner from No Fuss Events said: “We are delighted to be working with Benromach again in 2012, Benromach are part of the family at No Fuss. The events are all about recreational riders, as well as a scattering of elite racers, off road riders and weekend warriors participating in a sport that we all love, it’s all about like-minded people; and having a good time in a fun and relaxed environment.”

As well as commitment to the Three Ten Series, Benromach will provide spot prizes and the opportunity for participants to sample Benromach Traditional Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Located on the outskirts of Forres, Benromach is Speyside’s smallest working distillery. Only two experienced distiller’s hand-craft Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and pure spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. Specially selected casks are then filled with the new make spirit before being left to mature at the distillery for many years.

To enter the mountain bike challenge visit www.nofussevents.co.uk. If you would like to represent your pub, hotel or café in the series then all you have to do is get a team of four together and purchase a ticket, come along and enjoy not only Great Mountain biking but craic and entertainment in abundance.

Gordon & MacPhail named drinks wholesaler of the year

Elgin based whisky, wine and spirit merchant, Gordon & MacPhail, has been named Drinks Wholesaler of the Year at the Drinks Retailing Awards 2012.

The awards, held at The Dorchester, London on 7 February 2012, brought together the leading lights of the drinks industry to recognise innovation and best practice across the sector.

Established in Elgin in 1895, the family owned and managed business of Gordon & MacPhail is one of the UK’s leading independent specialist wholesalers. Gordon & MacPhail stocks over 4,500 product lines, including of course, their famous malts.

They are the World’s Leading Malt Whisky Specialist and Gordon & MacPhail bottles more than 300 expressions of Single Malt Whisky under various ranges – selling them throughout the UK and exporting to more than 50 countries worldwide.

In 2009 the company won the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, following a 94% increase in exports over five years.

In March 2010 Gordon & MacPhail made history as it launched the world’s oldest single malt whisky – Gordon & MacPhail Generations Mortlach 70 Years Old – at an exclusive event at Edinburgh Castle.

This was followed up in March 2011 with the release of another ancient Single Malt – Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old.

Gordon & MacPhail also owns Benromach Distillery. Located on the outskirts of Forres, Benromach is Speyside’s smallest working distillery, employing just two experienced distillers.

Established in 1898 the distillery went through many changes of ownership and closures before being ‘rescued’ by Gordon & MacPhail, who purchased it in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five year period before it was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998.

The award was presented to Gordon & MacPhail in acknowledgement of the company’s extensive portfolio of products, investment in staff training and commitment to delivering excellent customer service.

The judges were also impressed by the company’s investment in technology including a new voice activated picking system. (Could do with one of those at home!)

Receiving the award on behalf of Gordon & MacPhail, Joint Managing Director, David Urquhart said: “Since 1895, we have placed our customers and their requirements at the heart of our business.

We value our working relationships and are eager to listen to our customers, working with them to meet their objectives. Along with the ongoing support from our suppliers and customers, winning this award is testament to the commitment and skills of the Gordon & MacPhail team at and their drive to continually exceed customer expectations.”

The company employs 140 people from its base in Elgin, of which a sales team of 20 covers the length of the UK. Gordon & MacPhail operates wholly owned bonded and duty paid warehouses, along with it’s own transport network.
